Firewood. Kind of a waste. Gave a big burl to a guy the other day though. Can't wait to see what he does with it.
That's why I asked, hate to see a beautiful locust like that go for firewood

Saw 3 separate lightning bolts through a double rainbow this evening. I dunno if I can ever top that.

15 in the woodyard. Anytime you get more than a half an inch the ground is saturated again.
Day after you can smell the mushrooms, love that.

I'll do the furniture but will be checking out milling options.
Feel free to give me a call, my knowledge is free and I'm happy to share it.

Our beech has beach leaf disease. This tree is one of the reasons we bought this lot 30 yrs ago. It's now roughly 50' tall with a 50' canopy and shades most of the front yard. The arborist wants to do a root flare injection for $900. But everything I read says spending hundreds a year will only prolong the inevitable. So we'll probably have to have it cut down.
I can get it milled, dried, and turned into custom furniture for you when the time comes if you like

Beautiful elm too. A friend of mine has 2 on the edge of one of his corn fields. Gotta love the perseverance. Just sad to think my kids might feel the same way about ash and beech that we do about elm and chestnut.

Of course I have a tree question for you. While hunting oaks today I ran across a healthy American chestnut about 30 ft tall and 10 inches in diameter. Certainly an outlier for me. They usually die much smaller. What do you find up in your neck of the woods?
Incredible! I have a couple saplings that grow off old root stock then die back, rinse and repeat. My folks have one that flowered this year.

Lightning strike at a campground near Ginxy and Ice Shop at Thompson Speedway also got hit
One struck close enough to my house that the thunder knocked a picture off a bookshelf. About shit myself and my 1 year old started bawling, other kids thought it was awesome though.

Yeah everyone is very excited and even mayve a bit anxious for the heat arrival. Too bad winterwolf checked out, I bet he's even angrier than usual yelling at complete strangers for no real reason.

Bigtoothed Aspen and Tulip Poplars are two different trees.
Alright, I wasn't sure. I'm coming from a perspective of hardwood lumber in which they are both lumped in together along with a few other types just as 'poplar'. Always looking to learn more.

Hickory tree at the end of my driveway I'd humongous. 110 feet easy.
Dibs on the butt log if it comes down for any reason.

Any forestry mensuration enthusiasts in here? I went across the river on family land to neighbor's property - cross the river - very rural (I snooped, don't tell!), and found the biggest Bigtooth Aspen I've ever seen. Not old growth, but (I think?) fairly old second growth - single stem exceeds 30" in diameter at breast height in forest that has much bigger single stem White Pines, and, to be frank, I I think it's over 120ft in height, but I can't confirm that, don't own the optical gear. I feel like that's pretty f'ing large for that species? Or no?
I learned em as tulip poplars, pretty sure it's the same thing. I've come across a few around here that really stand out compared to what's growing around them, beasts. Great as paint grade hardwood if you can get it clear and dried properly.

You put the bug in my ear to measure some of my trees. Can you please repost your measurements. Biggest / oldest seems to be a white oak at around 12 ft in circumference. Using the growth rate charts I found puts it at around 190 years. Although I couldn't find the growth rate for black locust. Have one a little over 12 ft.
Beauties. If they ever need a new home in board form let me know

You just check for ticks, how hard is it? Teach your kids to check for ticks. You spray, you get complacent, nevermind killing all the bugs. By all means, take the easy way out but don't come crying when your kids get ticks anyway.

Kind of a leaner though anyway. I'll sleep well thinking about trying to mill that tension wood.
