There were a few men dedicated to it...generally wealthy, educated men from either NYC, Boston, Philly, or D.C.....but for most of the rest of the population day to day life was so difficult and severe that a hobby such as weather observing would be deemed impractical...

Yeah, that's what I'm talking about. I'd never expect the average person from the early 1800s to keep detailed reports like that. There are probably some good data logs out they are probably buried deep in the basement of some museum or library.

it goes from 1851 to 1980...but you could only read the whole article for free up till i think 1910...
