Clouds - 2015

Back to my sunsets. This evening. When the color started getting good, most of the action was to the north. So I had to run to the south side of the pond. The mosquitos were horrible over there. I am still itching from all the bites I got.

When the red flash occurred I had to run back to my normal spot and get re-set-up there. There was a wicked cloud shadow that caused that *V* in the middle of the image.

Back at the pond again this evening.

Some nice cloud designs when I got there.

Some nice sun rays on the right side of the image. Yes this is an HDR and the image is still too blue.

The last design of the evening.

Like a broken record, I was back at the pond again.

When I got there, looking southeast. Just my shadow and I.

post-671-0-75871700-1435290092_thumb.jpg

Yes this is an HDR and the colors are a mess. But I kind of like the resultant mess.

post-671-0-89983200-1435290108_thumb.jpg

A little bit later. Still another HDR but a lot better looking.

Thanks goodness. It is raining. You finally get a night without me bothering you. Well sort of, kind of. Actually I will be able to try and catch up on some sleep. The sunsets are occurring pretty late in the evening but they are now heading back towards a slightly earlier time as we move along.

Only one night off. I was back out there this evening again.

When I got there...

Star burst...

Post sunset

All of these were using a feature of the camera I had not used before. It takes multiple images, I have it set at 6 images for these, averages them out and outputs them as a RAW file. The HDR section only uses three images and the output file is always .jpg.  I like this feature simply for the RAW output as it is much more acceptable to data-scrunching in post work. Supposidly the feature was in case if you left your filters at home that you could still make decent images. I do not agree with that at all. While it is not quite as contrasty as a single image, It is no where near to what you can do with NGD's. Seeing how I have just started messing with this I think it could be something that will work in a couple of situations.

Starting off today with something different. Some early afternoon shots of the Courthouse with some nice backing clouds. The first two images were taken with the 24-70mm with the circular polarizer and one GND.

Last image is of tonight's sunset. Taken with the 16-35mm and single GND. Also using the average of six images feature.

An entertaining and eventful night at the pond this evening.

When I got there. A hole in the clouds allowed me to see the top of a cell to the west and it was in the cloud shadow. Do not see this very often.

When the sun would pass a small opening, I was getting some intricate looking skies.

Here it was raining. I stuck it out as I could see from the visual satellite that if this shower could get past me, it might turn into a nice sunset.

Sure enough, once the rain moved on, it was a decent looking sunset.

I was not sure if anything would come of the sunset, but I could not keep myself away from the pond.

Here just before the Sun disappeared behind the clouds out west for good. Not much contrast here.

Here is one of the last images before I pulled up stakes for the evening. A little more contrast .

Another wishy-washy sunset. Although it get eventually get really still. So that was a plus.

When I got there. Best contrast of the evening.

Best of the last vestiges

All the above are shot with the multiple images (6) and average of...

This very last image is a normal single image.

As I was heading back to the car had a vivid orange flash to end the day. It spanned so much of the sky that the 16mm could not get it all. I chopped some off of the top.

Was a long, busy day behind the shutter today.

First, this afternoon, was out-and-about in the southwestern part of the county looking at the on-going flooding. Only got some nice cloud pics instead.

Looking northwest.

Looking northeast

Later, it was back to the pond for the sunset.

When I got there.

Dueling Blazes

After the sunset, I headed to the interstate overpass and was getting some long exposure of the traffic when in this image I got Jupiter in the upper left and a fairly vivid cloud shadow in the upper right.

Too bad the wind was blowing so hard this evening. Had the right kind of clouds in the right place. Even if they were zipping right along. But the water was pure chop.

post-671-0-70898700-1436928334_thumb.jpg

Later on it got a bit cloudy for just a short.

I thought this looked pretty cool...

Here it is a bit later and at 16mm but cropped top and bottom. Makes it look like a panoramic.

Was a busy night at the pond. The sky was in a capricious mood. The conditions were ever changing. At one point I fell way behind the camera and missed a couple shots when I lost track of where my settings were at. It happens, sometimes.

Suddenly I had a rather vivid cloud shadow going on.

It got even bolder before it was done.

This is from the overpass that you can see when I shoot to the southeast from the pond. When I was shooting from there, I had the police called on me again. Anyhow, a different take on my sunset.

Well this page started with a bang. but is going to be one post short of leaving with a bang.

This evening started out rather plain Jane.

Another night at the pond.

A nice sundog close to sunset, when I got there.

post-671-0-36670300-1437794392_thumb.jpg

Some nice clouds once the sun set and you could clearly see them.

post-671-0-06899300-1437794416_thumb.jpg

An overview of just how extensive the clouds were.

post-671-0-95188900-1437794430_thumb.jpg

A success! I have learned how not to blow out the reds! Still having trouble with the yellows but I am making in-roads. I will persevere, just like this sunset did.

Now to start off a new page fresh...

A cumulus cloud from this afternoon that tried to build but would only get about this far and then get squashed and/or torn apart.

post-671-0-12582400-1438656676_thumb.jpg

The sunset was so close to being memorable. Still a nice looking sunset.

What I started with this evening...

post-671-0-26009400-1439000644_thumb.jpg

What it tried to become...

post-671-0-98550500-1439000654_thumb.jpg

All the clouds were just a little bit too far to the south and west, even got a faint cloud shadow on the right side of the image, way off in the distance...

post-671-0-07250600-1439000678_thumb.jpg

Last image of the evening before I left. The exposure time were getting rather longish. The reds and oranges are reproduced almost perfect. The blues are starting to go all wonky. This is not an HDR but it is a six image average.

Looking southeast after a passing shower, with a short and faint rainbow arc in the center of the image...

post-671-0-99539100-1439258500_thumb.jpg

Immediately after sunset, there was a glow from all the low level moisture from the passing shower. This image hardly shows it but it was the best I could do...

post-671-0-11430000-1439258513_thumb.jpg

A nice design a long time after sunset...
