John Wheeler Winter Outlook For December 2010 – March 2011

December 2010 – Temperature: Above Normal – Precipitation: Near Normal

January 2011 – Temperature: Above Normal – Precipitation: Near Normal

February 2011 – Temperature: Near Normal – Precipitation: Below Normal

March 2011 – Temperature: Near Normal – Precipitation: Near Normal

Total snowfall for winter 2010 – 2011: 12.5” Inches (Near Normal)

La Niña will be the main factor in the year’s winter outlook. La Niña is expected to stay weak to moderate through most of the winter season. La Niña is caused by cooler than normal water temperatures in the equatorial pacific ocean and can cause extreme weather pattern changes across the USA. Several other climate factors like the Pacific North American Ridge (PNA), North Atlantic Oscillation (NAO) and Arctic Oscillation (AO). These Factors can not be forecasted in advanced and that adds uncertainty to the winter outlook.

The storm tracks this winter will likely stay to the North and West of Virginia for most of the winter season. That will cause warmer temperatures and rain more likely than snow; we will also have the risk of ice storms. It is possible we will see at least 1 major snow storm, that why I have normal snowfall for this winter, if that does not happen then we could see way below normal snowfall totals.
