So question. We had continual flashes of lightning up here but hardly any thunder. I think my husband and I counted 2 claps. Is it because the strongest part of the storm is right overhead. It reminded me of watching lightning off in the distance about 50 miles away. Continual light show but no thunder.

I noticed something like that but there was an occasional boom of thunder.  But on one specific occasion I saw a bolt of lightning, the actual zigzag bolt not just a flash, opened the door to listen to the thunder but it never came.  Also had nickel sized hail around 11:30pm -  midnight.   Another storm apparently hit around 4am but I slept through it, but I noticed some wind damage around the house, large branches down, lot of blossoms on my Yoshino Cherry ripped off.

  2. Uhmm, I went to the grocery store in Westminster this morning.  Not busy.  I wore a mask and had a disinfectant wipe with me.  I picked up some chicken thighs and few other things to make pressure cooker chicken casserole type dish.  No way can I not go grocery shopping for two to four weeks like some of y'all.   Yes, it's worrisome as an older gent with some health issues but still gotta eat healthy.

For those that are pretty much sheltering in place are you also experiencing the sensation of losing track of time? My wife and I wake up each morning having to remind each other what day it is. It has been sort of a surreal experience where everything seems out of wack. Also in the back of my mind I am constantly having the sensation that I am forgetting something or there is something I should be doing.

Guess I will put in my diary...

Day 11 of self enforced exile. Slowly losing my mind.

I have a couple of these clocks in the house.  You might find them helpful since they prominently display both Day and Date in a nice looking display.  Even the weather nerd is satiated with the indoor temperature displayed.  I have had them over a year, very reliable, multiple dimmer settings to fit the need and automatic time changes for EST, DST.

I was working down in Cockeysville today and drove through the Sam's club parking area to get to Lowes and it was like nothing I've seen before...black Friday doesn't hold a candle to what I saw . I just stopped at the local liquor store on my way back and literally got a hand truck loads worth . I'm set for a month or more:D. I'm hoping there's no shelter in place order so I can continue to work .

The liquor store next to the Giant in Westminster was on the quiet side when I visited earlier this morning.  I took a deep breath, entered, got what I wanted, walked out and exhaled.;)

  6. Had a period of small hail overnight around 11pm with a couple of nice lightning shots and loud thunder.   Caught 0.72" in the gauge but could have been more with those bouncy ice balls bouncing in and back out of the gauge.   Plenty of wind to go with that rain/ice too.

I'd be pretty shocked if our  area doesn't see anymore snow this season so ...to answer your question...yes I do expect it to snow :D . If it doesn't it would be historic up  here for such a long stretch without an inch ( Since Jan 8th) . Jan 19th was a 1/4" then ice storm . We moved up to CC in 88' . It would be a first to my knowledge. Actually going the month of February alone snowless here  i believe would be historic . The good thing is it will snow again . If not this season...then next . My weather tracking never stops so I'll keep on rolling rain/snow/ hail or whatever .

    A March  1958 , 1942, 1993, or 1962 redux is preferred however :weenie:

Was I-795 finished when you moved up Carroll County way?

If memory serves me the op Gfs showed only 3-6 inches till game time lol. Epic fail by that model for that Hecs .

That was a helluva storm for the northern tier.  Many of us got 2 feet plus and that ull passage in the evening was spectacular snow rates.

  9. 97-98 was a very active winter for storms in Jan. and Feb. in particular.  Several genuine Miller A types if memory serves me right.  Ocean City had massive problems with erosion that winter.  Problem is they were rain producers for the most part.  I still managed to get 16.5" of snow for the winter including a 7" storm on March 3.

Be careful with PA. There is a very real chance they will be going after that money (low hanging fruit) sometime in the near future. Their debts are piling up (biggie is the Teachers Pension) and their fiscal responsibility is going in the tank as we see spending ramping up. There is only so long they can reshuffle money and kick the can down the road before the bills will be due. Wife and I were seriously considering moving to Somerset in two years to stay in PA for the tax benefits on pensions but have recently started to reconsider for those very reasons stated above. They also hammer you pretty hard on Real Estate and school taxes as well and would not be surprised to see them jump up even more as the State searches for money.

Thanks for the heads up I really appreciate it ........ decisions decisions decisions....ha ha.      If you can  explain what a school tax is and how it would effect a retiree.

It's hard to go wrong anywhere in NE or north. Very rugged and beautiful basically everywhere. NH has no state income tax and that's very important as we are trying retire early. MD is awful with both income and property taxes. No chance we're staying here unless they drop income tax. We all know the chance of that is 0%. If we both end up north we can hook up, ride sleds and weenie out. Lol

Don't know how much this would help you but the governor recently said he is introducing legislation to raise the pension exclusion in MD to $50000 (currently 30000 for 65 and older) and add partial income tax relief (I believe he said 50% deduction?) on amounts above that up to $100000.  So there is that.   I would like to see that come to fruition I just hope the folks  in Annapolis want to give the older folks in MD a break as much as they want to throw money into schools around here.  As an aside, Pennsylvania is a pretty good state for retirees from what I know about it.  They have no state income tax on pensions, 401k annuities and such, and social security benefits whatsoever.  You still pay state income on any ordinary wages you might earn plus things like dividends and interest.  Anyhow I have given some thought to moving over the border.
