I think they will be bad. I went to Killington several weeks ago after a cutter and it was pretty bad. I mapped out all of the snowmaking trails and skied only those trails where they blew or were blowing snow on, it was still bad. Perhaps Okemo has better snowmaking capacity and would produce a better product . Or ski the Northern Greens Upslope Machine.

Skied Belleayre on Saturday. The conditions were pretty good. The last natural snow was about 6 inches 8/9 days ago. But temps were cold and they must have blown snow everywhere for 8/9 days straight. 

Anyone know how far north the freezing rain got? I know Belleayre, Hunter and I believe Plattekill had ZR... wondering if the ZR made it into Mount Snow or Stratton?

Agree. I’ve seen that a lot in the corporate world. However, I’ve also seen managers with less than desirable people skills get laid off. I think the recent trend (at least in my company) has been to have managers who motivate people instead of being condescending and abusive. I believe it’s slowly getting better.

Nice! Mine were considered mid-fats when I bought them 9 years ago. Only 78mm under foot. The trend has been to go fatter lately.

Question for you sir. The Ukie paints 8-12 for NYC and the north shore of LI. Doesn’t that take into account the mix/ mid level warmth at 850? Or perhaps that 8-12 includes a boatload of sleet and is there a bloated nunber?

I skied BigSky/Moonlight back in 2009. It was my favorite western resort. Didn’t have 2 feet of powder though. Buying slightly used skiis is the way to go. I bought my current pair at Stowe’s Demo Center. They were $1200 skiis, got them for $550.. they were only used a few times that season. 

I was at Timberline lodge this past July (I didn’t ski). They were still able to ski just about to the lodge from the Palmer snowfield. 

Are you going to bring both your regular skiis and powder skiis out west? I wonder if it’s problematic to ski on fatties if there’s not much powder? (Although the PAC NW should have tons of snow by Feb.)

Going skiing on Saturday at Belleayre and prolly hit Plattekill on Sunday. Never skied in Fatties before. Sunday should be great for that! I don’t do that well in 2 feet of powder, LOL!   I need to demo a pair one of these days.

Too early to nail down totals, but gun to head and based on what I’m reading at this early juncture - I’d guess that the jackpot would be the  Catskills, Berks, Southern Greens and Whites (1 to 2 feet). Though the Catskills and Berks might mix with a bit of sleet. The mountains typically do much better than where the populous live.

I’m pretty sure it was also the Valentines Day storm that hammered Jay Peak with over 70” of snow. If I recall correctly, about half of that was from the backend upslope machine. On their pic of the day, had a guy doing a jump off the roof of one of the base lodge buildings.

Seems like there is some thought it might turn to ice/rain, but I can't really follow the meteorological terminology in the weather threads...

I believe all options are still on the table at this juncture, but I think that the Catskills will be spared the ice. Can’t rule out some sleet mixing in. But with 15-20 inches of snow, you’d hardly notice!

i don’t get his constant dissing on Stratton. If your coming from down south it’s the first decent mountain. And I would rather the high end feel then a bunch of riff raff. There are plenty of hard core snow boarders still here as it used to be the epicenter of snow boarding and where jake burton took snow boarding main stream. Obviously it has nothing on further north but that’s not feasible for me.

today has some super fun soft spring conditions and again I have the place to myself. If you have all gortex it’s fine.

 

 

 

Good to know Magic now has the old Snowbowl lift.

Yes I agree Stratton is the first decent mountain coming up from the south, though some would argue Mount Snow is a tad closer, but I definitely prefer Stratton over Mount Snow.  

Stratton has deep roots in snowboard boots for sure! My buddy bought one of his boards at the shoppe in the village. The slope side village is another plus Stratton has which is unique to New England. 

Living in Long Island is not a convenient place when trying to get to Mtns. 

Skiing/snowboarding is a very expensive sport, so you’ll run into the high end folks most resorts anyway. They don’t bother me at all. Speaking of  riff raff- you get that at Mountain Creek and some of the Poconos. Went to Blue Moutain last year and one of my buddies snowboards was stolen. We prayed and asked God to find it and within a couple hours, mountain security overheard the guy bragging about stealing a snowboard. We got the snowboard back!!  Unfortunately that’s the type of clientele you have at the resorts with proximity to NYC. You need to lock up all your gear. No cubbies!

It really does. Last year was great at Platty! I love the small anti-resort feel of the place. You really feel far from civilization there. Don’t get me wrong, I enjoy big resorts too, but there’s something special about old school/ mom and pop.

For an experienced skier looking for terrain, when there is quality natural snow there is nothing better on the east coast than Magic Mtn. 

I can’t diss on Stratton. That was my first big resort I ever skied. I also skied there on the March 1993 superstorm. I couldn’t believe they ran the Gondi all day until about 4pm without any wind holds. It was nuts, could barely see the trials. Drove to the Red Sled Motel in whiteout conditions- it was scary. 

Have to agree with you on Okemo, great mountain and I prefer that over Stratton.  

Speaking of Magic- hit that last March after the 4 NorEaster’s. They got about 80” within roughly 2 weeks. It was awesome. Lift lines were 20-25 minutes per run since the black chair was having issues and not operating- but there were zero complaints- the snow was that good.

Plattekill Mountain in the Catskills is similar to Magic, though smaller. On the plus side, the longest line I’ve ever seen there was 5 minutes. Usually it’s between 0 and 2 minutes, LOL.

Skied Killington on Sunday. I knew it would be bad due to Friday’s rainstorm and subsequent hard freeze- but was already committed with lodging and a group of friends. I convinced my group to skip skiing on Saturday to give the resort a good 24 hrs to make snow for Sunday.

I mapped out all the trails which had snowmaking the night before (or blowing snow during the day) and skied only those trails. You could still feel the boilerplate beneath the madmade snow. By 2PM, the snow was all skied  off and I thought I’d become the latest act of the Icecapades. It was pretty bad, but tried to make lemonade out of a lemon.

This was a pretty bad cutter as it was a soaking 2 inches of rain combined with temps around 50 at the ski resorts.. I suspect major damage was done to the snowpack. 

Now I hear talks of another potential cutter on the 28th, yikes!!  I already booked a room to hit Killington next weekend.

Hopefully that will trend colder and at least spare the ski resorts. After an amazing epic start to the season, we are now having some setbacks. As you mention, the northern greens are more resilient with their special microclimate snow machine, but that’s at least a 6 hour drive from LI, LOL. 

Skiing is a great way to get a snow fix when it’s not happening on the coastal plain. But this Rains to Maines business ain’t no fun. 

Looking forward to the pattern change that 40/70 Benchmark and others are talking about.  Bring it!

Wow, super cool new lift. I skied Big Sky/Moonlight Basin back in January 2009. Got a bunch of friends together and rented a slope-side Moonlight Mountain House chalet. One of my best trips ever. I loved the laid back feel and friendly vibe of the place. Hardly a lift line to speak of. Riding the tram to the summit and the accompanying views were a treat. Was able to do a side trip into Yellowstone on snowmobile. Enjoyed seeing the geothermal features and wildlife.

Overall, an amazing place I would highly recommend to anyone.

Agree. Growing up in the 80s in Rego Park, Queens, usually our biggest snowfall for the entire winter was a 6 incher. It would be an above average year to get an 8 inch snowstorm. I moved to Long Island in 2001, and since the move, I’m amazed at how many 12+ snowfalls we get. I’m saying to myself where was all this snow when I was a kid, lol. 

I have never had even 1 snow day while attending NYC public schools. I was too young for the Blizzard of ‘78, and the blizzard of ‘83 started on a Friday afternoon; by the time Monday rolled around, NYC schools were open. 

Nowadays, I expect and least 1, 12 inch or more storm per year.  It’s like revenge of the weenies these days.
