  1. Yeah I know what can happen.  The weather weenie in me would still like to experience it lol.  It's enough to be interesting and disruptive but not cause catastrophic damage.  Threat of a tree falling on the roof here is pretty low due to how far away they are.
We didnt have trees close enough to fall on the roof but Ike did make me get a new roof as we lost big sections of shingles. 81 mph peak gust and it blew close to that all day. I think we were without power for 2 or 3 days. It was pretty cool as I was out in it all day but it was a real PIA after.

  2. Asymptomatic carriers still test positive and just drives the case for more testing. You’re not stuck just relying on telltale signs like coughing and sneezing to isolate potential carriers.

Weekly or even daily tests at high-risk facilities like meat-packing plants would be wise - those who test positive are sent home for two weeks and the plant doesn’t shut down.
No one is arguing the merits of testing. You are talking about going from a half million tests per day to tens of millions of tests per day. I hope it can be done but it seems a little pie in the sky to me.

  3. That’s like saying that Hurricane Watches are useless and people should wait until the death toll/structural damage numbers of a storm come in.
The death/recovery rates lag by a couple weeks from initial symptoms. If you have a sudden surge of cases, you can at least try to prepare a week or so in advance.
With all the assymptomatic cases it may be like trying to place a hurricane warning on the US coast based on one ship report in the Leeward Islands. I have my doubts there will ever be enough tests or people to run down every contact. We are about 6 weeks into social distancing and almost as long into the shut down and still getting record numbers. Yeah, there are more tests but still getting that many positives is concerning.

  4. On the bad news front all of these assymptamatic cases and maybe even mild cases may be able to get it again this fall. Nothing is known for sure yet but just based on other coronavirus infections the severity of the disease may be tied to immune response down the road. 2 to 3 years in severe cases and 2 to 3 months possibly in mild or assymptomatic cases.

  5. This is the main point.  Buckeye - I (and many others, I'm sure) do understand where you are coming from...but what does it say about us as a country/society/culture when there are so many deaths that occur for every 1pp increase in the unemployment rate?  That is the issue.  It's not about hard-core idealistic socialism...but we really need to stop with this "every man for himself" attitude in this country, and create communities where we all do what's best for the greater good, not competing viciously against one another for every nickle and dime of income so that we can barely survive until the next paycheck.  What kind of a life is that?  Why is our health care tied to employment in the first place?  Why don't we have paid sick leave like other countries have?  What do we value??  Sure, these policies would mean a higher cost of goods and services...but isn't that a reasonable price to pay for security in health and wellness?
COVID-19 is exposing so many of these underlying issues in our culture.  Of course an individual's own business that they spent blood, sweat, and tears on is important and valuable and should be protected as much as possible.  But in a country as wealthy as we are, why can't we pull out all the economic stops to help every single person in this country...knowing that it's an emergency that will better position us for the long-term.  Basically, what Powerball referenced.  When 40% of people live paycheck to paycheck, $1,200 doesn't help much.  Yes, these emergency measures may mean higher taxes or other challenges down the road...but it's an emergency.  Why don't we all work with each other and collectively sacrifice for the greater good?  We need to stop the "you vs. me" attitude that is toxic to this country.
The 1200 was a stimulus payment. The enhanced unemployment insurance also gives an extra 600 per week on top of regular unemployment for 4 months. A very large percentage will be making more on unemployment than their regular salary with less expense as far as gas and what not.

  6. this turns out to be an excellent map of far it is to a grocery store
Good point. Those areas east of the Rockies are pretty socially isolated anyway and usually it's a pretty good drive to get anything. The SE is a bit worrying however.

  7. According to the Jerusalem Post an Israeli doctor working in Italy reported that patients over 60 are no longer allowed to be put on ventilators.

  8. I just don't see this being as bad as the 2009 pandemic. Over 12,000 Americans died in that one.

If it isn't worse than 2009 then it will be because of the measures being taken. 61,000,000 infections on 2009. A conservative estimate of that many infections with this virus would result in 610,000 deaths.

  9. From PAH

Evansville and Paducah will finish the 2019-2020 winter season (Dec-Feb) with no measurable snow. First time on record for Evansville this has occurred. Tied least snowy winter for Paducah, last set in 1991-1992.

  10. Yea and there's nothing fun about that.   I experienced -22 back during the Jan '94(or '95 can't recall which), super arctic outbreak.   It was interesting for a day just to experience, but that's about it.  I lived in a condo complex at the time and no one could go to work because their cars wouldn't start.     Also, once you get down to temps that extreme, the misery index sky rockets for most people due to things like pipes freezing, car issues, heating concerns, and quite simply life-threatening cold.
We got into the -30's here for that one and the -20's sometime in the late 90's iirc. I hope that we don't approach that again. Minus single digits is plenty cold enough.

  11. Im looking forward to going full nuclear troll if this pattern fails.   JB, LC, DT, are all in my cross hairs.  I can't guarantee Don S will be spared either.   Tell me this is going to be an epic winter....winter of yore....better damn well produce.  As of now the farmers almanac and the cfsv2 are schooling these dudes.
It has been pretty comical around these parts. The December to remember was being pitched in early November. It kept getting pushed back. Christmas we were going to get blasted and then New Years and now they have finally punted till the 20th. If we get down to climo it will be talked up like the next ice age and victory declared.

  12. Horrible avoidable tragedy.
I have been on that cruise, albeit 20 years or so ago. IIRC you are only on the water for 30 minutes or so. If they don't have someone monitoring the weather and warning them off before they hit the water that is gross negligence.
