I remember back then you did some investigating and concluded that the LGA ASOS especially was out of whack.  And that the 40:1 ratios of the other stations were more reasonable but still probably off and the true ratio was probably more like 25:1  Does that sound about right, Ray?  It was like a storm the midwest might see- surprised we didn't get a blizzard warning here, but I guess the winds weren't high enough for long enough.

That sounds vaguely familiar but honestly my memory isn't all that clear from back then anymore.

I think LGA had like 80:1 ratios while the rest of the area was around 40:1 ratios.  I think that was the "sunrise snowstorm" I remember with the snow looking pink as it fell in front of the rising sun.  And then in winter 2009-10 in February we had the "sunset snowstorm" where pink snow fell at sunset!

I'd call that an "asos ratio" since that was back when all ASOS was even worse at snow:liquid ratios than it is now... back when all they had was tipping buckets.  Now some (including all that measure snow) have weighing gauges.

Thanks for sharing. I still love going through your winter storm archive. One of my favorite winter weather sites. Any chance you'll find the time to update it again? If it's something you're interested in at all, I wouldn't mind helping either since I know it's got to be a lot of work putting all the maps together. It's an awesome resource to relive the past winter storms .

I've been concentrating on other things the last several years. I still keep close tabs and save materials, I just haven't assembled anything in quite a few years.  I suspect that at some point, my focus will shift back towards it... I just can't say when, yet.

  4. Hi all,

Been a while since I posted.  I know many of you probably hope I'll get around to the winter storm archive again some day, and its possible I will, but since that day is not today, I figured I'd share with you something I have finally gotten around to... putting all my old TV recordings up on YouTube.  Its a lot of TWC and some old local news clips too (mostly WPVI at first, later branching to the other stations). So far I'm only thru early 1996, but since that did include the blizzard, I thought it was time to share.  I'm linking to the "playlists" page since that's the most organized, but if you want to dig thru every single video, just skip over to the videos page.

Not any longer I don't think? He used to be before moving. (MA sub forum) I don't see him around here at all...or very very limited.

Honestly I hardly post much, period... being back east means I'm more distracted by other interests more than ever, so something else had to give. It ended up being the forums (the lack of time had kinda already halted further development of the winter storm pages back around 2013).  Not a lack of interest, just not enough time to post anything useful.

Hey Steve, according to NWS guidelines you never use a ratio for measurement that is always going to be wrong. IP/Sleet accumulation is exactly the same as snow. If snow changes to IP....wipe the board and start over with new measurement in inches of sleet accumulation. Bottom line is snow and sleet are exactly the same and recorded as snowfall. If you get 4 inches of snow and then 2 inches of sleet you record that as 6 inches of snow

Actually, you shouldn’t clear even if type changes if it hasn’t been 6 hours from the last clearing. So... if you clear the board at noon, it snows til 3 then changes to sleet, you still can’t clear the board until 6.

I think we more or less sorted it out, but to summarize:

Is sleet counted as snow for snowfall totals, and at a 1 to 1 ratio? E.g., 3" of snow followed by 0.5" of sleet would be 3.5" of snow (especially if measured separately, as opposed to snow depth).

What is the LE ratio for sleet, about 3:1? Newman seems to have it nailed down at around 3.5:1.

There are the model output (snowfall map) issues where sleet may be added to total snowfall as if it was snow at a 10:1 ratio, but I think that can be sorted out by looking at soundings, upper air temps, qpf, snow depth maps, etc.

    Thanks in advance Ray!

3:1 or 3.5:1 is about right. Model snow map output continues to have issues discriminating. In any mix scenario I would always look closely at thermals for myself.

I seem to remember at least one of those, but I don't remember if it was successful for you.

Closest thing to that that I've done is to rent a bobcat for a day last March to clear the driveway. We had been on the cut-off edge model-wise between 2" and 10" for a Thursday event, and after the 12z Euro run on Tuesday had us into the deeper snow I called the rental place and scheduled it for delivery Wednesday pm. It worked out well, lol, we got about 8".

I was looking for a foot plus storm, but never managed to find one. I did find a historic storm with the October 2011 snow, so that was worth it, even tho it wasn’t that much in total.

  9. Tomato, tomatoe. I lurk there quite a bit actually. Its still the same 3 or 4 folks talking to themselves day in, day out. There were more posts in this subforum today than the other site all subforums combined. Maybe thats not saying a whole lot tho.

Only reason there were more posts here is because of this topic. And those few people are way smarter than me.
  10. And there it goes.  LOLZ.  Yeah there's really a problem with this place if it can't stand competition.

I deleted this comment before, but really, I don't care what happens here.  I don't spend any time here.  I go to Tom's forum.  Since I'm in the mid-atlantic now, I go there too, but my time spent in this sub-forum is near zero.  Given that situation and the lack of posting in general, it would make sense to merge the forums and just have a Philly area thread for obs/disco/banter.  They do that for other regions in NYC and in Mid-Atlantic already.
