  1. Already saw some flurries this morning. Currently 24.6 on the river...
  2. I feel this is a bit misleading as well. The fast majority of SWVA is under the moderate impact, I read this chart and think "no big deal" slick roads for a bit and probably few power outages.
  3. I'm a Dolphins fan I've become numb to disappointment
  4. I thought the same until i read an article about sleet sticking to snow that's already fallen on trees and powerlines and adding weight.
  5. Curious what you guys think. Can sleet accumulate to cause tree damage or power outages? I have never experienced a sleet storm that has stuck to anything other than the ground.
  6. If EURO Low Temps verify. Lowest Temps for these locations since... Charlotte- - ( 7 - 2015) Greensboro- (-8 - 1985) Roanoke- (-11 - 1985) Asheville - (-4 1994) Wilmington- (11 1996) Raleigh -( 1 -2000) GFS Blacksburg - (-18 -1985) Charlotte - Tie All time record of -5 (1985 & 1899) Gainesville - 1985 (-8)
  7. Question? If I had a sled on top of Fancy gap and rode down the mountain, would I reach statesville, or just keep heading south to Rock Hill!!!
  8. I have to imagine with the amount of moisture this will be throwing down there might be some thundersnow? I haven't seen any since the 09' storm
  9. I once had an engineering pal tell me "with enough time and money, you can do just about anything". Right now we are not putting any time or money into the sciences.
  10. I think it also forces the real guys to be more conservative in forecasting to avoid the alarmist reputation.
  11. This is probably a question for a different thread. I'm curious how much funding cuts and a lack of investment in our models and weather infrastructure will impact predictions going forward and if this is the best we can hope for?
  12. Not sure how to fix it, more education I guess. Getting people to understand the difference between possible and probable.
  13. From Blacksburg NWS Now for what everyone really cares about: snow and ice totals. Due to the cold air in place and already cold ground temperatures, any snow that does fall will be light and fluffy and accumulate quickly. The initial onset of snow will cause 2-4" of snow to fall along/south of the NC/VA border, increasing to 5-8" along US-460. Northern areas along I-64 will see 10-14"+ of snow, with locally higher amounts possible. On top of the snow will be sleet accumulations, possibly measured in inches as well. Around 1-3" of sleet could accumulate due to the very cold surface temperatures on top of the snow. If the sleet starts sooner, the snow totals will also decrease. Finally, ice accumulations will be light along/west of the Blue Ridge and north of I-64, with anywhere from a glaze to two tenths possible. For the Piedmont, 0.25-0.40" is expected, mainly Sunday afternoon/evening. The ice will add a crusty hard layer on top of the snow/sleet. With all of the above being said, take this storm seriously and prepare now. Due to the storm having mixed precipitation types, roads will be harder to clear, causing travel to be difficult and dangerous. If at all possible, avoid travel unless absolutely necessary. With the slightly later timing of the storm, Monday morning`s commute will be treacherous, especially with very cold temperatures keeping all fallen precipitation from melting.
  14. It has the FRAM maps, that is supposed to predict ice accretion on elevated surfaces.
