We've had sleet and snow here in Rocky Mount Virginia for about an hour. Everything is covering up quickly and the main roads are starting to fail. Got VDOT moving slow .

I can't remember any to be honest. Usually when Roanoke is faced with an icy situation, it's primarily sleet. Aside from the freezing rain we received in December, it hasn't occurred often in my mind. Normally Floyd is the place that gets hammered by icy events.
For that NAM run, Radford seems to be on the fringe. Out of sheer curiosity, I have an urge to travel to Floyd, Poor Mountain, Bent Mountain, or Rocky mount to see what a true freezing rain event looks like.
When we get Ice storms anywhere from Bent Mountain to Rocky Mount is the place to be to get a true experience. I'm in Rocky Mount Virginia and everyone is not happy about this. If it verified it would be the biggest Ice storm since 98 and the impact will be bad.

If this verified , it's been probably 20+ years since an ICE storm like this came through
Yup the year was 1998 that we got 6 inches of sleet and .50 inches of freezing rain when I lived on Chestnut Plateau not to far from where I live now in Franklin County. This was in late February to early March of that year. Was absolutely unbelievable the amount of sleet and the trees just caving under the ice. Of course no power for a week was not fun. I never want to repeat that storm again.

Well woke up to 6 inches on the ground and still snowing. Starting to mix with sleet at 29 degrees yikes.

Perfect. Hoping that this first band holds up and delivers. HRRR has me with 2" on the ground in the next five hours or so -- that bit looks to be a crucial part.
Yeah that band that just passed SWVA into Lynchburg means business. I'm an hour or so west of Lynchburg in Franklin County VA and we picked up 1.25 inches in a hour. Roads are covered.

I'm curious if anyone knows why HRRR has so much change from run to run on totals? For example 0z looks juicy but 1z and 3z not so much but you look at the 3kNam and its a decent hit depending on location.

I think for me personally with my overall thoughts and feelings on the storm. 5” and over I’m completely happy. Anything under 4” and I feel like the storm will have def underperformed up this way. That’s my baseline going into tomorrow mornings wake up.
Its just my opinion but one thing that seemed consistent for our area is a range of totals with highest potential being 8 to 10 with low range 5 to 6 inches. I think you will do well and honestly don't see you mixing up that way. However, I may have sleet issues here. Hopefully with me being 2 miles northeast of Rocky Mount Virginia and slightly higher elevation I will avoid it but time will tell.

Maybe another half hour before this round ends for me. Either way the prediction for about an inch out of this round was accurate. My secondary is covered but the primary VDOT is keeping clear for now.

Just took a nice walk outside. Driveway and roads starting to cave now. Been a good while since we’ve had a meaningful storm.
Agreed, its been since 2018 it feels like. The snow has picked back up to heavy and VDOT just dropped their plows. Man I have not heard that noise in a long time.

I feel like a kid again minus the alcohol I'm drinking. Sitting outside bundled up watching it snow. 32/28 with moderate snow coming down and 1/2 inch on the ground.

The band traversing up this way right now has underperformed severely. Complete virga and the back end is rocketing east/northeast. Glad to see some cashed in to my south and west.
@Buddy1987By my untrained eye it looks like you have some decent bands coming your way. Is it doing anything out that way?

Light snow has begun sitting at 32 with some juicy stuff coming this way.

Will this band hold together and get us up here?

Hoping since are are now within 24 hrs of the event that the models start catching on to the dry air and stronger CAD
Its been a long time since I posted ladies and gentlemen. Hopefully we all have some good surprises with this storm. I'm just south of you @BornAgain13 in Franklin County VA. Thank you all for the updates and the educational info. Let it snow!

Temps down to 30 with moderate sleet snow mix. Grounds covered quickly within an hour. My secondary caved quicker than I thought and the main looks to be going with it. Got VDOT moving slow.
