Long Beach 51 degrees right now, my neighborhood 63. So glad I don’t have to endure “spring” there again.

Oof.  That breeze off the water is a killer this time of year.

Negative NAO showing up on the models just in time for April lol

Anyone ready for a cool and wet spring ?

That figures.  Our spring weather has been terrible as of late.  I'm enjoying this current stretch of mild weather as much as I can.

I don't get why so many people hate people of other beliefs or that are different from themselves. You're right, there is so much division and hate. We're literally all equal. We all came here the same way, we're all humans. The golden rule is all we have to do, treat others as you want to be treated. It's so simple, yet so hard. I'm of the belief that people can do anything they want or believe anything they want as long as it doesn't hurt someone else.

I completely agree.  If people took a step back, they'd see that we have so much more in common than we realize.

I don’t see it getting better either. There’s a ton of resentment, hate and anger in our society. I can’t even say it’s the events of the past year causing people to snap because these tragedies have been occurring long before then.

Yeah, the way it affects random people in so many random ways makes it anxiety-inducing. Still so much up in the air.

I am in a personal dilemma of continuing to risk possible exposure to it or getting the vaccine. I am also anxious about getting the vaccine (for personal reasons of my own).

Same here.  I'm generally not anti-vaccines but this one just worries me.  Probably because of the speed with which it was developed.  I know I don't want to get the virus either, though.  The after-effects can be brutal and it's a terrible way to die if heaven forbid it came to that. A co-worker of my mom's passed away from it two months ago.  She was overweight and had diabetes but it's a risk no matter what your health profile is.

bottomed out around 18 here.  Frigid with wind blowing this AM.  Would do mid Jan proud

Yup. Straight up nasty outside this morning. The sun really didn’t help at all. A kick in the butt after last week’s gorgeous weather.

I don’t understand why you’re so anti rich people. Anyone who works their asss off in this country can climb to whatever income level they want. Jeff bezos was by no means born rich. Is legislation being passed to prevent another Jeff bezos or Elon musk? I grew up on public assistance and I don’t remember any rich people getting in the way of me getting to where am at. Instead I worked for a few who without I wouldn’t be where I’m at in my career.

Completely agree.  There are so many opportunities these days, especially with the power of the internet.  I don't understand why success is demonized so much.  Some make the argument that the rich don't pay enough in taxes as a way to give back to the society where they became successful...but you can also ask why the government can't live within its means.  How many of our tax dollars do they waste on nonsense?  It seems like government is often a bottomless pit of inefficiency run by faceless, unaccountable bureaucrats.  People in the private sector have to produce and react quickly to the market or they'll be replaced and driven out of business.

Yeah Brodeur is an all time great. You guys have had a great team back then with Stevens. How many cups did you win 3?

Yes, 1995, 2000 and 2003.  Could have been four or five Cups but they lost a heartbreaker to the Rangers in the 1994 conference finals (Messier's guarantee and Matteau's double overtime series winner).  Then Ray Bourque and the Avalanche beat them in the 2001 Final when the Devils were up 3-2 in the series and could have finished it out at home.  No complaints though.  I got to watch some great hockey over the years.  Scott Niedermayer was a tremendous d-man also.  Killed me when he went to Anaheim but I was happy for him when he won the Cup with his brother out there.

Bills tailgates are the greatest thing on this planet. You haven't lived until you've been to one.

Just the videos that I've seen of those tailgates blows my mind lol.  I can only imagine what it's like in the flesh.  Buffalo has such great fans.  If any fan base deserves to see a Super Bowl one day, it's theirs.  Ditto for the Sabres and the Stanley Cup.  Even though I'm a Devils fan, I kind of adopted Buffalo as my second team in the late 90's.  I loved watching Hasek play and their team reminded me of Jersey's at the time.  Not a ton of stars offensively but very gritty and determined.  One of my favorite sports memories is seeing Brodeur and Hasek pitch a double shutout at the Meadowlands two days before Christmas in 1996.  It wasn't a boring game either.  Both of them made great saves and there were plenty of scoring chances.

Those tenants sound like trash and I’m sorry your dad has to deal with them.

My mom rented out one side of a duplex that she inherited from her parents after they passed away. She wishes that she had just sold it immediately. Both tenants were a royal pain in the a$$. Didn’t take care of the unit, constant noise and yelling, always complaining about something, etc. The first tenant left significant damage and didn’t even fully clean the place out after moving and was shocked when she didn’t get her security deposit back. The level of entitlement is off the charts with a lot of people these days. I don’t think I’d ever want to be a landlord.

Really tired of seeing soccer matches in europe with no fans. It's such a key part of game atmosphere.  But they seem to be having more problems with covid than here.

Honestly, I’m not even watching sports right now. It’s not the same without fans. I tuned into the Super Bowl but that’s been about it since last March.

I went to funeral for my wifes great aunt on Sunday who was 98 years old. She died from complications from 2nd dose of vaccine in the nursing home. Shes a twin and her sister didn't get the vaccine and is doing just fine. She was completely healthy as well. Obviously covid probably would have killed her too if she contracted it.

So sad. This is why I’m still nervous about getting  the vaccine. Who knows now I’ll react to it? If not getting it means I can’t go to games or concerts, I’m starting to feel OK with that. I try to do everything I can to keep my immune system strong. Regular exercise, vitamins, healthy eating, proper sleep, etc. I’m honestly more comfortable doing those things and wearing the mask than I am with the vaccine.

Man people really get cranky about not having snow on the ground Xmas

I’d take a brisk, sunny morning but I don’t necessarily need snow. Just doesn’t feel like Christmas to me when it’s 60 degrees out.

It sounds to me like he has the US average tenant.

I’m genuinely perplexed by those who lean hard to either side of the political spectrum.  Thinking that most people just need a little boost to get past a little bad luck is ignorant and blatantly ignores the fact that most people will do as little as possible in most circumstances.  It is often highly educated people who land on the “left” side of the spectrum which makes no sense to me.

Then you have the people far on the “right” who think that lower taxes on business owners (i.e. “the rich”) will translate to significantly more jobs and a more robust economy.  The majority of those rich business owners got where they are by squeezing maximum production out of a minimum number of employees and maximizing the profit.  Lower tax rates allow them to keep more of that profit, until Biden increases the upper income tax rates again.  I’m not saying business owners do it wrong, I’m just saying they are primarily motivated by putting money in their pocket. Maybe a handful use that money to expand when they otherwise wouldn’t have, but I believe most established business owners just enjoy another BMW.

It’s kind of funny, actually.  There is a pretty clear parallel between people anywhere on the income spectrum.  Most people try to minimize effort (called either work or expense) while trying to maximize return (called either government benefits or profit).

Someone had a similar quote in a book that I once read...most employees do just enough work so they won’t get fired and most employers pay just enough so the workers won’t quit...but I still stand by my belief that a system that doesn’t demand enough accountability on any level is doomed to fail.

You see this new "training" in America's education system. Oh? You didn't do anything and failed? Blame the teacher! Here's a cookie for your trouble, child...oh, and an A.

    No. Consequences. Any more.

The unfortunate, uncomfortable truth. It's going to collapse one day, perhaps sooner than any of us realize.  A system with zero accountability at any level is doomed to failure.  So sad.

First of all it is extremely difficult to get an appointment to receive the vaccine. Second yes it’s like Halloween at 1600 Pennsylvania ave. It’s extremely scary how they’re not concerned at all with the repercussions this will cause...for years...

Most politicians don't care partly because so many of them are of an advanced age.  They won't be around in 20 years to deal with the fallout...and they also know that the reelection rate for incumbents is high.  Many of them are guaranteed a job for as long as they want it because voters elect the same people and then complain when nothing changes.  Kicking the can down the road and letting another generation deal with the mess is something our "leaders" are great at...and that goes for both parties.  I'm not making a partisan statement here.

My dads tenants haven't paid rent in over a year and hes short almost $20k. The stim package includes rental assistance but only if the tenant applies for it. If my dad changes the locks and kicks them out he gets charged a misdemeanor. His lawyer said there is nothing he can do. The tenants in his apartment don't care at all, they are not going to put forth any effort to get the rental assistance to help my dad out. They have big TVS and xboxs being mailed to their house nearly every week. My dad still has a mortgage to pay. Its unfair.

Exactly.  That's the part so many forget...or maybe they simply don't care.  Not everyone who owns property is rich and they also have obligations that have to be met.  Individual landlords like your dad are getting killed.  It's a vicious cycle.  This might sound harsh but it's almost becoming too easy to be a deadbeat in this society.  If you get bailed out all the time, what are the consequences of not contributing to society and putting more of a burden on others?  It will eventually get to a point where more and more people decide that the toil is no longer worth it if most of their income is withheld to fund social programs.  When the takers outnumber the makers, society is in deep trouble.

More than crazy, it's irritating.  As someone who ties holiday mood to cold weather (perhaps this is in the medical books somewhere), these diabolically placed 60 degree days just before Christmas which have seemed to occur almost every year since about 2013 have got to go.

Especially when we end up with a warm rain and fog on Christmas Eve, which has happened a couple times lately also.

You’re definitely optimistic thinking the Bills are going to have a full stadium this year. Syracuse University finally was able to allow a certain number of students into sporting events in the Carrier Dome. In order to get in you must have a negative Covid test within 24 hours of the event then take another rapid test when entering. These restrictions are not going away by next fall. The wild card in our return to normalcy is the emergent variants in unvaccinated countries that evade our current vaccines. If we can somehow evade those we will return to normalcy sooner. If not then all bets are off. I think you won’t see more than 25,000 at Bills games this year.

We need to learn how to live with this thing and move on.  As long as hospitalizations don't overwhelm the system, it's time to try and get back to normal if all goes well with the vaccinations in the next several months.  The government can't keep printing money to prop everything up either.  The economy has to be able to stand on its own.
