All I can say is is that in MCLEAN and West Arlington we’ve had accumulating snow in mid March in the middle of the day while above freezing less than 24 hours after temps in the mid 80s. Rates baby.

Snowing in West Arlington near City of Falls Church

Just saw beach cam from Rehoboth Boardwalk. That escalated quickly

Just up the road in Great Falls, our temp/snow climo essentially mirrors IAD. Not at all comparable to DCA.
Temp down to 35.2.
More powers to you my good man. Maybe an inside the beltway thing. Cheers

Lived in McLean for 8 years a bit south of Great Falls Park. Snow did seem to accumulate well — and better — there. Always enjoyed drive home from work in DC heading north up GW Pkwy to McLean/Great Falls, enjoyed watching how the snowpack got better the further up the Pkwy I got. DC green, McLean white.
Lived in McLean for 62 years. The difference between totals on MCLEAN and DCA is significant and real. However, the difference has gone down over years and we are unfortunately now closer to DCA‘s totals then we are IAD’s. That’s happened in the last 10 years and it sucks.

I wasn't here at that time but the P-day blizzard of 79 was epic.
True. Nothing has compared to it since.

I mean, I try to think of events that gave us 11-12+ inches of snow followed by the crust. I can't think of any, lol. Seems to be we tend to get 6-8" in those situations, maybe 9-10" at most. Meh, still significant no matter how you look at it. Plus, the crust should inhibit the melting.
What did PD II give us snow wise before the crust?

I'll grant you all a nice 4-6" storm while I'm gone the week of the 26th, but if there is a big dog I'm cursing every last one of you on this board!
I’m gone that week so rest assured it unequivocally will happen. I’ve known this for months. You can blame me. I know I will.

18z GFS a bit of a step back, depending on location. A little worse for me, but still close to 2 inches, but better for S DE, damn near 4". I might consider a trip to Rehoboth since I'm off for MLK day.
Good idea. Might do same

I'm convinced it's a dna hardwired trait. I was obsessed with snow when I was 2 and my parents didn't care for it all that much. There was no conditioning and I was too young to understand science. Simply born this way... for better or worse... probably worse
I definitely believe I’m hardwire for snow. My parents didn’t know what to make of it when I was a child. Then as teenager when I witnessed PD I, well, it cemented in me forever.

Hail in McLean

Wasn’t planning on going to Rehoboth for this one. But might as well. Need to check on the place anyway. DFH and snow is still a good thing.

My parents just west of Rehoboth have been getting absolutely steamrolled over that way. Congrats and enjoy!
Milton did really well on storm a month ago. It’s a Sussex County year in Delaware. Silver Lake was beautiful with all the ice two weeks ago

Unpredicted clipper that dropped an additional 2-5 inches on the Tuesday then 6-10 on Friday.
I always felt during the peak of the clipper it snowed with more intensity than anytime during the main event a few days earlier.

A Christmas Eve event here in McLean that actually whitened things up a bit. In the interest of optimism and a positive attitude, I will declare victory as we head into what could be a productive January.

We had a clipper that season that dropped several inches of snow in single digits temps, I think. Might have been 20:1 ratios. Somewhat similar to the low qpf high performer several years ago.Good call. It was the coldest day time snow I can think of having spent a lifetime in NOVA.

I only post on this board when it is about that storm. Yes it was life changing for me. Before then I loved snow because I was a teenager hoping to get out of school. After that day it was because I was fascinated by what the hell just happened. I thought I was the only one obsessed for years after that storm. Thank God I found this place. With regards to the storm, waking at dawn and looking out my window that Monday morning is still one of the most shocking weather things I ever witnessed. I have not seen those rates in the DMV since. Honestly not even close . February ‘83 was incredible. But no. ‘96 it snowed forever but not close. Biggest drifts I have seen to this day. I have pictures somewhere from ‘66 my dad took. They were actually higher. But I was only 2 1/2 so no actual memory of it. PD1 will stay with me forever.

That's like a classic 90s snowstorm.
Even similar to many 70s events in the DMV until things got going in 78 and 79.

Jim Cantore not impressed at all with any staying power of mid February flip back to winter in the East. If at all.

These last two storms remind me so much of what we used to get here when I was a kid growing up in the ‘70s. These kind of storms were our go to. It seemed like every heavy snow warning was 4-6. I think my earliest memory of a 6-8 warning was in ‘78. I was so surprised since I didn’t know that was even a thing lol. Then Feb ‘79 came and that changed everything.

80 Degrees to Ripping Snow: March 12th
in Mid Atlantic
Posted
Beautiful in West Arlington-City of Falls Church border. I think 1980 might have had snow in March a day or two after hitting 80. But this one will have a place of its own after the last two days in the DMV.
