100%. I'd be shocked in Cuomo won New York next year.

it will be very interesting to see the governor races shake out in the next cycle. Personally, I am disgusted at how much some of these governors have circumvented state legislatures during this pandemic

3 of my relatives have gotten the first dose of vaccine.  All 3 had some side effects.  One had just a mild headache.  Another had a more severe headache.  The third person had a lot of fatigue.  All of these resolved pretty quickly.  Since they reacted to the first dose, I am figuring they are going to have side effects from the second dose as well, but hopefully nothing too bad.  One of them goes for dose #2 next week.

my mom got her second dose a few days ago. so far no side effects at all through the first and second shot other than a sore arm

    100% true

It is well-established at this point that being overweight/obese can result in worse outcomes for covid.  But speaking more generally, being at a normal weight does not necessarily mean you are healthy.

I mean there's a difference between fat shaming and encouraging people to lead a healthy lifestyle. It doesn't have to be one or the other

  4. cases continue to drop substantially here in Michigan. I'm really curious about when we could actually start seeing the effect of natural herd immunity starting to affect case numbers in certain areas that were hit hard previously. obviously the amount of actual infections among the general population are far more than what has been reported, especially in the early stages when testing was woefully insufficient

Do bring up a good point though. Why is spread so bad up in the Midwest? Honestly all these restrictions in the North, yet the spread is so much worse?

Personal opinion, it’s all private gatherings and work. The more you take away from public options, the more people resort to cookouts and movie nights with friends. Between that and the abundance of factories and distribution centers, it’s going to lead to higher spread

climate has some factor in it. Midwest typically experiences worse flu seasons than other warmer places. At least here in michigan the % of active covid cases in hospitals compared to total hospitalizations has continued to decline even though the total number of current covid hospitalizations has increased

I also agree that most of the spread has been from work and private gatherings. would also add schools into that as well. shutting down restaurants, gyms, salons, etc isn't going to make much of a difference imo.

  6. Whitmer claims that bars and restaurants are an easy target for covid spread, yet the health departments own data doesn't support it. Hair salons were one of the last to open in the last shutdown claiming easy covid spread, yet they are allowed to be open this time around

"I'm not an anti vaxer but"... The classic anti-vax statement.

The money, time, effort, etc being poured into the vaccine research is astronomical. I don't think it is unreasonable to think a vaccine can be developed much quicker than they have been in the past when substantially more resources are being thrown at it.

Granted I want to see the studies. I want to see the data empirically peer reviewed to ensure it is legitimate and we don't have any Andrew Wakefield shenanigans. But no one has produced anything as of yet that represents any sort of evidence of data manipulation.

This argument is along the same lines as the equally ridiculous "we don't cure cancer because there is more profit in treating it".

I have never objected to vaccines that I know work. So again, I am not anti vaxer but go ahead with your assumptions. I never said that the vaccine won't be effective. Just that I understand why people might be skeptical right now

  8. I am not an anti vaxer but I can't fault people for questioning the effectiveness of the current covid vaccines being touted. Most vaccines take years to develop and this one is going to be done in less than a year.  Whichever companies can get their vaccines to the masses first is gonna cash in big time so there is definitely reason for these companies to fudge their numbers. Whether that is actually happening right now I don't know but it's something to consider

Right down the lines politically, right as things are spiking up too. Not to be political but they have no shame of stripping powers from her knowing what the state congress wants to do, which is turn this state into Florida in terms of openness. It is asinine and dangerous, it also flies in the face of the opinion of those in this state as 57% of the people in this state approve of the job Whitmer has done. Who are these people representing, it certainly isn't the people of this state.

no matter what your political leanings are I think can we all agree that no single person should have unlimited unilateral power to issue orders that are considered law without any input whatsoever from state legislature. that is how dictators are created

People naturally respond to acute problems more than chronic. The MSM has covered plenty on the obesity crisis over the years, and I hate to trigger you, but the former administration even had an initiative that improved nutritional values in school lunches that has since been scrapped for cheaper, unhealthier replacements.

    https://www.fns.usda.gov/pressrelease/002312

Americans aren't obese because of crappy school lunches. It's all about lifestyles choices. You want to help your kids avoid being obese and develop good habits, make them go outside, get some exercise and don't let them plop in front of the tv and their smartphones for hours on end. Actually take the time to make home cooked meals instead of eating out every day.

Apparently testing was way up, which is a good thing. Positivity rate was only 3.1% which is actually below the 7 day average.

a perfect example of the raw case numbers being misleading. Every headline i read today only talked about 1K cases and nothing about the actual number of tests and positivity rate. Another thing to note is michigan is now including "probable" cases in their hospitalization data so on the surface the numbers are gonna appear to spike.

This country has a real problem with being anti science. My entire Facebook is flooded with conspiracy theories about the coronavirus and anti vaccine. They think everything is corrupt. While many things are, I just don't see how scientists and those in the medical world that go to school for 10-15 years to help people would be involved in a giant ponzi scheme to deceive the country.

never underestimate what the allure of money and power will do to somebody.

It could just be people who were working all along and now have extra cash as they aren't going anywhere or on vacation. I mean most people actually didn't get those unemployment benefits, so this could actually just be normal consumption.

that could be a contributing factor but my customer base is generally those in the lower middle class

We're selling lobster and crab like it's going out of style lately.

Not the kind of purchase that's responsible for people on a fixed budget.

But... that's not going to stop me from selling it to them.

i sell items that would be considered luxury and definitely not essential. I'll just say it's absolutely insane the kind of money people are throwing out right now. it's all gonna come crashing down hard in the next couple months though unless the benefits get extended. been preparing since march so 'm ready for when it inevitably happens

I am the same way, but the American economy only does so well because the majority spend way beyond their means. My only debt is a 2.75% mortgage payment.

yup it's a double edged sword for me. My business has been booming ever since the PUA benefits kicked in and this is typically the slowest time of the year for me. Most of these people are probably up to their eyeballs in debt when they should actually be taking all that extra free money and using it to pay down their debts.

  16. Politics has been rotting us from the inside out long before trump was in office. The media has either gone far to the left or far to the right. There is no objective source to get your information from anymore

My biggest concern is the governors have so much power right now under the pretense of a public health emergency. No single person should be able to create laws that effect the livelihoods of its citizens without the input of the public or state legislature, which is exactly what has been going in Michigan for months now.

One thing this has done is made me frequent a lot more of the local businesses around here. I figure they are gonna need all the help they can get when they are inevitably forced to shut down again

20% of businesses go out in their first year. We're going to blow past that at this rate.

Here's the thing, that $600 per week and PPP is giving you a false sense of where we are right now. Quite a few people (a sh-t ton) have MORE money staying home right now, so every open business has a larger pool of customers to sell to. That's going to end and many of those businesses that gave those people eligibility for the unemployment won't be there. The real pain hasn't even started yet.

toally agree 100%. I can't tell you how many people i've talked to that said they are just rolling in the free money right now. Normally this is the slowest time of the year for my business but I am busier now than i am in my typical busy time of year. Once the PUA runs out, a whole lot more people are going to be hurting
