alright, Long Lake here I come. Cayuga Lake is just too cloudy. Kinda stinks, i put a lot of work into scouting Cayuga and feel like I am winging this a bit now.
I can't leave till kids are off to school tomorrow either, so if traffic is bad I will be in a bit of trouble time-wise

Seems to me that the bottom line is you can't plan where you're going until the afternoon before. This isn't tracking a storm, it's looking for a clear(ish) sky and you can't predict that more than 12-24 hours out. I've been looking forward to this for 30 years and have run through a million scenarios and it keeps coming down to leaving home by midnight and heading for the choice spot to be there before most people and before local LEOs have closed stuff off. There are only 2 things that will change my plan and they're both revolving around our fathers whose health is rapidly fading, my dad is in hospice and my FIL could leave us at any time.
Hang in there, not easy
Eclipse wise is in max totality or bust for you? Or are you fine with 2 min. Asking because a midnight leave is difficult, you must be searching prime time real estate with near 4 minute totality
I'm hoping for 2+ without many people. Tough to find day of, but going for it.

Looks like Niagara Falls now forecasting mostly cloudy - after mostly sunny for days. Hopefully changes back between now and then.
Tough game time decision between a partly sunny forecast for where we plan to go vs a fully sunny forecast somewhere else.

it's a Panasonic FZ300 I selected it for 4K video as well as good telephoto (constant f/2.8 lens)
that great 600mm telephoto will be fun

during totality it's perfectly safe, but not during the partial phases.
I bought this double filter system to take pictures, one filter blocks 99.999% of all visible light and the other one blocks all UV and all IR.
ARe you shooting w/ full frame and are you trying to get the sun with a telephoto or something wide? i've never shot an eclipse or the sun, and have lost my mind trying to read up on the best settings. And of course this week it's cloudy and rainy so i can't even practice.
I want a wide angle timelapse. So will start with the solar filter on (16 stops) and then take it off and adjust the shutter speed quickly. But I am sure i am going to screw it up.

Plan on leaving Jersey early (5:00, maybe 4:00) Monday morning. Tentative destination Batavia, NY but will adjust along the way depending on any cloud coverage or arriving clouds. Thinking of getting room Monday night to avoid the crowds heading back.
I can't leave until 7.30 am for personal reasons, really hampering my options. I am thinking somwhere in the eastern fingerlakes - auburn or skaneateles. Not the best totality duration, but better than no totality for sure

No, it's not about there being eclipses in those years, it's about the similarity in the path between 1994 and 2024.
Both are going from Texas to Upstate NY, the percentage of the sun covered is even the same in NYC (89%)
There are most definitely eclipse cycles-- they are called Saros Cycles.
1994 was also annular, so this year is very unique and rare for the area, can't wait!

This is the last Total Eclipse within 4-5 hours of NJ that i will be alive for, so definitely making a trip north to see this. I don't think i will try any telephoto shots, rather focus on some wider angle landscapes, maybe a quick timelapse.
Biggest issue is finding a location day of the checks the boxes for a good photos. Google Earth can only do so much.

The "+" is unnecessary sensationalism and not even a "thing." Just call it a strong cat 5. Draw a comparison to Camille or something. Don't make shit up for effect, it makes you look dumb.
You argument is that the word "strong" is better than a + sign. There is no difference, both convey a hurricane with winds higher than the cat 5 minimum standard

stormguy - not sure you are qualified to say anything more than meteorology is amongst the most competitive fields to try and make a living in. Seems like you will only be satisfied if people say it is "the most", period. You made your point, time to move on.

What an incredible experience. Lifetime highlight. I did screw up my timelapse though, so that was ruined, but i will never forget looking through binoculars during totality. Truly awe inspiring.
