  1. Agreed, it is evident that Don has a strong grasp of statistics & probability. The probability may be accounting for what some may see as "guessing" but I see it as pure mathematics. It's impossible for medium/long-range weather forecasts to be deterministic. Don is one of the best & most cautious posters, and his posts come come off as the farthest thing from a weenie.
  2. SI's Mesonet site reporting 12°F, feels balmy now that the winds have died down
  3. Interesting little fact about today - it seems all 6 official climate sites tied/set records for the lowest maximum temperature: Central Park - Previous Record 16°F; Observed 16°F LGA - Previous Record 21°F; Observed 17°F JFK - Previous Record 23°F; Observed 17°F ISP - Previous Record 23°F; Observed 17°F BDR - Previous Record 24°F; Observed 18°F EWR - Previous Record 17°F; Observed 17°F
  4. According to Staten Island's Mesonet site at CSI, 2-m temperature bottomed out at 1.6° in the 7AM hour. It has since warmed up to 6°F.
  5. Staten Island down to 7°F, Td is -16°F, wind chill -13°F. Still gusting to 36 mph
  6. Radar can show many non-meteorological objects - insects, birds, smoke and so on. That's why you can't just rely on an app, lol
  7. Staten Island at 9°F, dewpoint of -16°F, wind chill of -12°. Just a tad chilly.
  8. You sure? I just checked radar and it appears to be from the Marcal Paper fire in Elmwood Park, NJ. Dual pol indicates non-meteorological returns
  9. Winds really cranking now. W 27 mph gusting to 44 mph. Temp down to 13°F with wind chill of -7°F
  10. A few pics from the start & height of the squall, as well as one of tonight's gorgeous sunset
  11. Staten Island's Mesonet site is reporting 15°F, Td of -5°F, winds from the west at 18 mph with 35 mph gusts, and a wind chill of -2°F. Absolutely frigid right now, can't wait for tomorrow morning
  12. Staten Island Mesonet reporting 32° with a Td of 9°. Winds starting to pick up as well, gusting to 26 mph. Clouds have increased quite a bit too.
  13. Temp down to 35 now, baby steps in the right direction I guess
  14. You’re right, got pretty much zilch going on right now
  15. Temp now down to 36 with light rain, and west wind 6 mph
  16. What do you suspect is the reasoning for this massive "dry slot" on this particular run of the HRRR? Something inherently flawed with the model?
  17. Looks like mixing line is just about east of SI...we shall see what happens!
  18. Light, annoying, dreary cold rain continues on Staten Island. Interestingly, temp has dropped from 41.1 as of 6:50PM to 38.8 now, and winds are now out of the west.
  19. Yep within the past hour and a half or so my winds on Staten Island have gone from SE to SW. Not ideal, but better than off Lower NY Bay.
