  1. Drive back from downtown to Chagrin Falls. I-77S was okay, not great, but once I got over Valley View then things took a turn for the worse. 480E was awful and it just got worse closer I got to Solon. Absolutely ripping out there, haven't seen it snow this hard for quite some time.

  2. I made the mistake of going to the Giant Eagle in Tanglewood via Chagrin Rd about a half-hour ago. The roads were bad on the way out, 15 mins at the supermarket, they were atrocious on the way back and getting worse. Lucky I have AWD and snow tires on...! We've easily had 3 - 4" since late this afternoon. Moderate to heavy snow here at my place 2mi S of Chagrin Falls village.

  3. Another band of moderate snow just started up here 1mi south of Chagrin Falls. I'd say easy 12" on our deck right now. I woke up earlier this morning at around 5:30am and it was howling outside, very heavy snow.

It always seems the events that aren't programmed to become the ones that overperform.

Who would have thought that January 2017 would actually end up being more mundane than last January?!

CLE has now dipped below 50% of normal snowfall for the season and will be racking up quite the deficit in the foreseeable future.

On a positive note, my snow removal bill is going to be low for the second year in a row!

The past few days have been a good example of how temperatures above freezing don't really melt much snow if you don't have high dewpoints. We've spent almost 24 hours with temps in the mid to upper 30s and dews in the low to mid 20s and the measly 1 inch of snow cover hasn't budged. Saturday will probably wipe everything away on the west side.

CLE definitely won't have a white Christmas, but I'm sure the primary belt will retain some snow through Sunday morning. 2004 was the last time CLE has had more than 1" on the ground at Christmas!

2004 was the year I moved here from Philly. My first Xmas was spent in Shaker Hts. The day before was cold, maybe high teens, and snowing, and Xmas day itself was beautiful too. Since then I have yet to see any kind of snowfall on Xmas day. Kind of crazy considering how much snow we generally get on the east side...

  6. Had a light dusting of snow overnight that has since melted. That should do it for the snow season. It was definitely a short intense winter. You basically had 1 week of winter in mid November and then another 5 week window from late January to the end of February.  All of December, the first half of January, and March were a dud.

This past March was one of the worst March's in memory. If it's going to be 4.5 degrees below normal, it might as well have some snow storms. It looks like March 1st will end up being CLE's last inch of snow for the season, which is incredibly early.

I'm actually thankful for an early end to winter this year. The cold in Jan and Feb was just brutal, the roads were awful, snow just kept piling up, heating bills were absurdly high.

I yearn for a good old snowy NE Ohio winter with plenty of lake effect snow, plenty of warm shots in between, and, especially, snow on Xmas Day itself. I've been in CLE for over 10 years and the only truly snowy Xmas day I can recall was Dec 2004. We've had dribs and drabs since but nothing earth shattering.

    Bring on BBQing season.

  7. I love the cold and snow but this, my 11th winter in Cleveland, tested my limits! Outside activities were severely curtailed, the snowplowing cost us a small pot of gold, my gas and electric bills were sky high, I'm ready for spring.

What a stretch of winter. It's really hard to imagine we were able to string over 2 months without bare ground. You can almost always expect a torch every 2-3 weeks in these parts to melt the snow back to grass. We'll probably end up around 70-75 days of continual snow cover, which is very impressive.

I'm still hoping for a late season big dog storm, or at least 3" so that CLE can officially hit normal for the season. In fact, CLE still averages another 14" of snow from this point on in the winter season.

It's also hard to believe this winter ended up colder than last, even with the mild snowless December.

  8. -9 already Imby. How low can we go. Nice pics of the ice... Amazing to see virtually no ice on Lake Ontario. That lake is almost impossible to freeze... Considering superior and Huron are almost frozen over.

Just got back from quick trip to Walgreens, -12 here about 15 mins ago. I could easily see -20 to -25 overnight with our lovely Arctic air, deep snowpack, clear skies, zero wind.

  9. Claridon in Geauga County already at 5.5" as of 11AM. The lakeshore counties will have 4-7" widespread by 1PM before any LES kicks in. Way too low on my forecast, but I still would've issued a warning.

I just went out to shovel the snow for some guests coming over today. I'd say here just south of Chagrin Falls we've got about 3 - 4" but it's blowing quite a bit. It's very light, very shovelable snow too.
