I have tremendous respect for Josh and all his peers like Mike Theiss.  Without their images and reportage I wouldn't be able to make such a declaration.  I'm not necessarily downplaying Maria.  I'm just saying that in terms of sheer power as far as Puerto rico is concerned it's not comparable to Andrew

Nobody said it was Andrew...OP asked for info on storm damage outside of SJ. There has been little to no info outside of San Juan.

What is it, about 12 hrs until PR LF?

It will at least be making landfall during daylight hours versus night. At least people will be able to see what the hell they're doing while all hell is breaking lose and have to find other shelter.

Correct me if wrong but during this horrendous hurricane season this will be the first daylight LF? All others were at night?

Irma's track was between St. Martin /Sint Maarten and Tortola, British Virgin Islands, which, if I remember correctly, both got hit by the eyewall of Irma. This means that Irma was about 79 nautical miles or 91 miles northeast at the point of Irma's track closest to Maria's current location

Thanks, thought it was relatively close. As far as the infrastructure in PR, it's about to get destroyed. They have already said expect to have no power for months and no drinking water for weeks. The islands electric provider filed for bankruptcy in July. Most commutation towers were built 20 plus yrs ago to withstand 135mph.

    Well, I was wrong-

    Period.

I didn't think that it had this much intensification left in it.

I'll need to be more mindful of the distance between eyewalls in the future.

Thanks for all of the feedback and advice, guys.....very helpful.

Can't assume an ERC will progress simply because an OEW is present, and the eye is so small.

Never stop learning in this hobby.

Anyone able to post were Irma was in relation to were Maria is now? Just curious as I imagine Irma was no more than 100-150 miles more northeast?

Wow, and this one is still strengthening.  Probably approaching maximum potential since 910mb is about as strong as those waters will support.

We are now 16-17 hrs in from the last communication out of Dominica. Has anyone heard anything? The situation would appear to be dire. With the sun setting soon it appears less likely to hear anything the rest of the night.

I think PR will be aided by an ERC...relatively speaking, of course...my guess is 130mph LF intensity on PR.

Not a chance it gets down to 130 by LF in PR. You expect a ERC to take 35mph off it? Or do you feel there is something else not being mentioned that will reduce wind speed?

That site also allows you to hear radio in PR and   islands

Pretty scary as there has been no communication out of Dominica for a solid 12-13 hrs....this has St Maarten type of destruction written all over it.

Here is a picture of the very beautiful resort area known as Isla Verde, about a half hours drive East of downtown San Juan. It's located very close to where the airport is, which is behind the resort in the very bottom left corner of the picture. The area behind these hotels is a highly populated residential area which is located in a valley. The higher terrain is a good distance to the Southeast of this location, on the other side of the airport.

    Image result for isla verde

Want disagreeing with you, just posting info to back up your post of the port area being most likely to take on surge. I believe this area that you posted is what locals call "new" San Juan as the most recently modern development in San Juan vs the downtown old San Juan.

I have stayed at the Marriott twice which is almost right next door. The area directly behind the resorts is very flat as well, with many one story homes and buildings. A 6-9' storm surge could submerge a lot of neighborhoods.

Just examined my vaca pics of San Juan. The pic you posted of the area around the port is probably one of the few areas that could take on large amounts of storm surge. The majority of San Juan is protected by high enough elevations that the surge will not impact. In addition in old San Juan there are many streets that have high elevation that will keep them safe from flooding. The areas around the forts and downtown old San Juan should be ok from surge but the port area could take on lots of water.

a million people loss power in irma and the storm was much farther away then maria will be as it crosses the island the damage will be extreme for sure...

Keep in mind that there are still 60,000 without power in PR from Irma.

It'll be interesting to see how Maria does now that it is back over the water. Such small cores can be impacted significantly by land interaction - hence the ~20 MB rise in a relatively short period. However, they can also get their act together in a hurry if the land interaction wasn't too damaging to the inner core - which I'm not sure it was based on the fact it only spent a few hours over land. We'll probably find out over the next two hours what the speed for any intensification might be.

Did Maria wobble farther north over the island of Dominica than expected? Could this possibly help SAN Juan and hurt the Vurgin Islands? Obviously there are many wobbles left but I feel she is further north than expected.

This talk show out of Antigua is doing a good job covering Maria. Playing clips of Dominica station before they went off air.

The eye is determined to hit every portion of this small island, now going up the middle. The only part that might not come into direct contact is the far southwest portion of the island.

Maybe it depends on the site? I have it on Weather.cod

Real life perspective for people of Dominica. I will use fla as example, understanding it will never likely happen.

27 hrs ago Maria was a TS, people in fla would brush it off.

now 27-30 hrs later you have a cat 5 barreling down on you that is full speed ahead vs a slowing cat 5 when it hits lands.

this would create mass chaos in fla. Imagine how many people would be unable to evacuate.

in Dominica that is what happened today with much less supplies, support .

This is going to be catastrophic and just as bad as st Maarten if not worse.

Then the cruising industry should be donating huge sums of cash to the relief and rebuilding efforts. The cruise lines have made a fortune on the backs of these islands and I hope they remember that now in the lesser Antilles biggest time of need.

Cruise lines have made several stops in st Maarten and st Thomas with provisions. Just about any ship that has gone by has dropped something off.

Good thing they haven't rebuilt anything on Barbuda yet.  JFC.

I read an article on Friday. They evacuated Barbuda for Jose, everyone. As of Friday nobody had returned to the island. Not sure if/when people will return as they are lacking the dollars and supplies to rebuild there infrastructure.

On another note this has put a huge hurt on eastern Carib cruising. As of now St Maarten, St Thomas have been shut down. Many cruises now headed toward Dominique and St Kitts to replace affore mentioned islands. These islands rely on cruising as a major part of there economy and if Dominique and St Kitts get shut down for awhile it could really be bad.
