Ripping pretty good here in Poughkeepsie.  Been a while since we’ve seen snow like this.

And it’s fitting that the dim sun has just made an appearance thru the snowflakes as if to say “I am your future”

The dreaded dim sun peaking thru the very light snow in Poughkeepsie.

Just got in from playing outside with the kids.  Hammering out there.  Shoveled a spot and had almost 3” covering that same spot 80 mins later.

I live in Poughkeepsie now, but I grew up in Buffalo.  I did commercial snow plowing right after I graduated from college, and the very first flakes I plowed were Christmas week 2001.  Just a bonkers event for the Northtowns and I’ve still never seen anything like it.  As it turned out, I also plowed on either Christmas Eve or Christmas Day in ‘02 and ‘03.

Heaviest snow in Dutchess looks to be between the river and the Taconic

Moderate snow in Pleasant Valley. A little over an inch so far.

My family came out of Brooklyn and Queens and the diaspora began in about the 1940's. Now I have only a few cousins left Downstate. Some came Upstate such as my father and grandparents about 60 years ago. Others scattered all over. When people moved Upstate such as POU or Kingston in the 1950's they essentially became Upstaters because nobody would consider commuting back to the city. Now you have people commuting 75 + miles and tons of weekend home owners that are only part time Upstaters.

I grew up in Buffalo, and my family tells me I now live "downstate", yet to City folk, I live "upstate". Can someone please tell me where I live?!?!?

As an interesting commuting aside, I do a bit of a "reverse commute", going from POU to Catskill, NY, and there are times when I'm on the Taconic where I don't pass a single car during an almost 45 mile commute. I almost took a job in White Plains which is just as far, but a totally different commute.

We're going on 5 straight hours of band after band of snow and winds with almost no letting up. Unreal.

Puking snow in Pleasant Valley. Just a dusting out in front of my building, but the drift on the drivers side of my Subie Forester is 2/3rds of the way to the roof!!

Pretty amazing scene outside my place. Howling winds, intense snow. Really awesome.

Snowing sideways right now. Wind howling. My weather station isn't working, but i'd guess 20mph sustained winds with gusts around 30. As nasty as I've seen in my 3 years in POU...During the Snowicane last year, we were in mostly rain out east here in Pleasant Valley.

I grew up in Buffalo, so it's nice to see some WNY wind and snow out this way.

What's the composition of the snow out by you?

Snow is dry and very light. Already starting to drift in the nooks and crannies around the building.
