  1. Another snowfall season is upon us...and so is another contest. This year we'll be doing the entire season...which officially runs from July 1, 2015 to June 30, 2016. So, obviously it's already started, but whatever. The contest is pretty simple: guess the total season snowfall for each of the following 20 sites in our region/sub-forum. Alpena, MI (APN) Chicago, IL (ORD) Cleveland, OH (CLE) Columbus, OH (CMH) Detroit, MI (DTW) Fort Wayne, IN (FWA) Grand Rapids, MI (GRR) Green Bay, WI (GRB) Indianapolis, IN (IND) La Crosse, WI (LSE) London, ON (YXU) Louisville, KY (SDF) Marquette, MI (MQT) Milwaukee, WI (MKE) Minneapolis, MN (MSP) Moline, IL (MLI) Paducah, KY (PAH) Peoria, IL (PIA) St. Louis, MO (STL) Toronto, ON (YYZ) Tiebreaker #1: December total snowfall at ORD Tiebreaker #2: January total snowfall at IND Tiebreaker #3: February total snowfall at DTW Winner will be the person who has the least total error from actual snowfall. Deadline to enter is November 1, 2015. Good luck to all. A little help maybe, but here's the last 30 years of season snowfall totals for all 20 sites (and the average of those 30 seasons). Nino seasons shaded in red.
  2. 2014-15 snowfall contest is open for business. Over/unders are boring, so this year we're picking the total amount of snowfall for each city below that is recorded from November 1, 2014 to March 31, 2015. I'll figure out the best way to score it at some point, but that shouldn't matter with your guesses. Deadline to enter is November 3, 2014. Good luck to all. Alpena, MI (APN) Chicago, IL (ORD) Cleveland, OH (CLE) Columbus, OH (CMH) Detroit, MI (DTW) Fort Wayne, IN (FWA) Grand Rapids, MI (GRR) Green Bay, WI (GRB) Indianapolis, IN (IND) La Crosse, WI (LSE) London, ON (YXU) Louisville, KY (SDF) Marquette, MI (MQT) Milwaukee, WI (MKE) Minneapolis, MN (MSP) Moline, IL (MLI) Paducah, KY (PAH) Peoria, IL (PIA) St. Louis, MO (STL) Toronto, ON (YYZ) Tiebreakers are going out of region, just for kicks. Tiebreaker #1 • total snowfall in December 2014 for Buffalo, NY (BUF) Tiebreaker #2 • total snowfall in January 2015 for Boston, MA (BOS) Tiebreaker #3 • total snowfall in February 2015 for Washington DC (DCA) Maybe a little of are the 1981-10 snowfall normals for each city.
  3. Haven't had one of these in awhile, so let's do one. Guess the total snowfall for this storm (we'll put the dates as Jan 31 thru Feb 2 right now) for the following sites. Winner gets snow. Deadline to enter is 3:00pm Saturday 1/31. Chicago IL (ORD) Cleveland OH (CLE) Columbus OH (CMH) Detroit MI (DTW) Fort Wayne IN (FWA) Grand Rapids MI (GRR) Indianapolis IN (IND) Milwaukee WI (MKE) Moline IL (MLI) Peoria IL (PIA) Bonus question: total snowfall for LAF
  4. Title is a little mis-leading, because as per my research, there's only been one winter storm that Chicago, Columbus, Detroit, Indianapolis, St. Louis, and Toronto all had at least 6" of snow.....and that being.....January 1-3, 1999. I used Indianapolis as my baseline, and their 6"+ storms...and went and looked up the others to see what they got in those storms. 9 other storms came close, but one city failed in each case to get to 6". Regardless, we'll still take a peak at those storms later. First up, the storm that did achieve the hard-to-achieve...January 1-3, 1999: The New Year's Day Blizzard Chicago: 21.6" Columbus: 6.6" Detroit: 11.3" Indianapolis: 10.9" St. Louis: 8.0" Toronto: 8.6" (15.1" at the downtown station)
  5. 2014 coming to a close, so what's your favorite weather event/memories/moments/whatever of the past year? Outside of the cold and snow early on, it was a pretty boring year IMBY. But, here's my list of favorites: January 5 snowstorm followed by an arctic outbreak January 22 arctic front/squalls February 4-5 snowstorm January-March wintry weather to close out a historic winter 2013-14 for LAF Record cool July August 21-22 heavy rainfall event Really cold November Anyways...Happy New Year, and hopefully 2015 is a fun weather year for all.
  6. Current weather is kind of boring, so why not reminisce a little. In this thread we can post/discuss our favorite past December winter storms. One of mine goes back to the great month of December 2000. Fairly expansive area that received some form of wintry precipitation with this storm. Blizzard Warnings were issued late in the storm for parts of NE IL and NW IN. Fun storm in a fun month of winter. December 10-12, 2000 Winter Storm Surface maps from 0z 12/11 to 12z 12/12.
