I wonder what the high end is for sleet accumulation in this general area (SNE) I think it was in '08 or so when I had my plow route we had two separate storms with lots of sleet, most I'd ever seen. One was like 3 inches

February 14, 2007 was a prolific sleet storm in parts of the Hudson Valley and NW CT. I had at least 4-5" of sleet in Poughkeepsie, including thunder sleet on a couple of occasions.

9 PM measurement 5.5 inches here. I can ecstatically report 3.25 inches in the last hour.

Of course tempering my enthusiasm, because why should any of us have a worry free snow fall at 19°, is the dry slot and the sleet showing up closer and closer.

I have to stop watching models before a storm because they never live up to expectations be it positive or negative.

I posted the same thing to Julian on Twitter around the same time. I need to put down the models and slowly back away!

  3. 8” new overnight in Staatsburg, pure fluff. Had about 5” from part 1, so a nice total of 13”. Didn’t think I’d make it to 12”. Nice start to the season considering it’s third accumulating snow IMBY and it’s just December 3. It’s surprising how much those 10-15 or so miles between Poughkeepsie and Rhinebeck make such a difference in many storms. I’ve noticed it for years while living in Poughkeepsie and now I’m seeing it firsthand.

I'm surprised that watches are still up, now inside of 12 hours. I'll grant that the main event isn't until Monday, but tomorrow will still be plenty messy for an advisory.

So funny, I actually made this exact point to them in a tweet last night. We were finally upgraded to warnings with the overnight package.

What are your thoughts on the storm? I’m a little hesitant to buy into the big totals on some models given mixing issues and dry-slotting, but I’m not sure I buy the degree of shadowing that some of the high res models are showing.

This will be the first big snowfall since we bought our new house in May. I bought an Ego snowblower yesterday, the first time I’ve owned one. Looking forward to trying it out over the next couple of days.

  5. Like Will said, I would NOT want to be an OKX guy.

One of their forecasters has been visiting the NYC forum from time to time since yesterday and still seems pretty confident on high totals for their area. He initially said he would have preferred 20-30", but went with the default graphics of the NWS. It's in the storm thread. Certainly a boom or bust scenario shaping up.
