Just a note since I am already dealing with this issue... If HWW continues for parts of eastern CT, superintendents are going to pull the plug... Especially in heavily wooded towns...

When I was a Director of Administrative Services for an area school department, winds were a big issue when you had kids waiting at bus stops and a good possibility a school would lose power during the day.  You'd rather cancel up front than have an early dismissal, especially with elementary school kids.

  2. To anyone who is superstitious, the pull cable on my generator broke when doing a test start earlier today and my ongoing repair efforts have failed.  The odds of losing power in South Kingstown, RI just increased 200%.  At least my mother's generator started right up.

I'm not discounting your theory it may end up being less in the locations you mentioned, but I'm sure that all of the locations you have mentioned have seen two feet of snow on a few occasions in the last 25 years.  But yes, very rare, and almost never a jackpot location in this setup.

We've hit 24" a couple of time here is South Kingstown (between the coast and URI) in the 25+ years I've lived here but it is rare (especially compared to when I lived in Worcester).  We usually don't get large accumulations of the high ratio snow here, but I'm hoping that is the case in this storm, especially if I have to shovel my way to the generator.

Sigh… just had my first power flicker…that does not bode well. Was hoping to make it until at least noontime.

I got my morning coffee in without needing to break out the Coleman stove and the percolator and I'll be turning on the generator when it is light out.  I'm trying to accentuate the positive. Now so long as nothing falls on the house...

    Westerly beaches LF

THE NWS Boston graphical forecast for South Kingstown showed a peak gust just under 80 and sustained winds near 60 at 3 PM.  Focusing on the small things, at least I will be able to fire up the generator while it is light out.

Perhaps they were referring to 50-69% of their customers in coastal RI.

I'm pretty sure that all of RI is serviced by NGRID.  At least that is the case here in South Kingstown and we have about half the population along the coast from Westerly to Narragansett.

We were out almost 3 weeks after Irma. Funny, for us down here in Florida it was the not having A/C that was killing us. Our food in the fridge was gone in 2 or 3 days, we had battery fans and lights, and ate canned food or out anywhere that was open (A/C too).

I wonder up north what is the worst issue of no power.

No heat is probably the biggest problem of a prolonged power outage.  It was after an outage of a couple of days without power in the winter that I broke down and had a transfer switch installed so I can cycle through running the refrigerator, furnace, sump pump, and some lights/outlets.  I also always keep a kerosene heater in operating condition to run in the basement.  Next step is a bigger generator so I can run them all simultaneously, along with at least one window AC unit. With more and more days/nights with dew points in the 70s here, however, AC is moving from nice to have to a week without AC in July and August would be miserable.

Haven't had to use the transfer switch yet.  I'm thinking tomorrow may be the first time if landfall is along the RI coast.

One day Emass might get something interesting tropical wise.  Basically missed all.of Sandy Irene Isiasis

I had a roof blow off a 13 story building in Boston from Sandy (albeit right on the water). I will have to try to find the picture from the next morning of a bunch of fellow Facilities staff pulling the membrane as close to back in place as possible.  That made the nor'easter that followed a week later tons of fun.

LOL the discrepancy on who cares about this storm is as diverse as the modeled LF tracks.  In all seriousness there's probably much more interest in what this storm does for those of us in the coastal areas, especially areas that may end up east of the eye, then those further inland where it will be certainly falling apart pretty quickly.

Agreed! Sitting here in South Kingstown, I can say that it has been interesting to follow this storm but I can't say I'm looking forward to its arrival IMBY. Every tree in my yard is a potential terrorist at this point.

holy shite, glad we don't live there. That dude in the white van at around the 1 minute mark is lucky he got out of there.

I'd hire the structural engineers for that red building and the white building a little further up the hill in  heartbeat.
