Question for those of you who live in this area...
I am heading up on Tuesday night to ski Wednesday and Thursday.
What am I heading into?
. ProI skied Friday at Cataloochee. Foggy with temps in the 30s. Conditions were great in my opinion - “mashed potatoes” with no ice. Can’t predict this week, but it was one of my favorite days this year because the lack of any icy spots allows for worry-free skiing.

Except most of those winters took place before 2010, you know, when it actually got cold every now and then. Most of us haven't even had a close call yet. Not to mention we're well past 1/15 and it's not looking good. Still, theres hope.
2 out of the 5 largest January snows in Asheville record history took place from 2010 to present . . .

GSP now expressing doubts about snow in latest AFD.

It looks like they are expecting all the early precipitation fall as either rain or sleet in the Asheville area, thus drastically cutting totals. And they say they didn't even use the NAM for this forecast, so this must be based off GFS and Euro?

I might be the only one still up! Raining hard here in North Asheville. Some concern about the lack of cold air filtering into the mountains so far, i.e. the cold chasing moisture concern. GSP forecast was originally for high elevation changeover in late evening hours. Cataloochee ski area is still at 37 degrees at 2:15AM, Mount Mitchell at 36. Asheville 47. I'm concerned the delayed temperature drop could effect totals. We will see though! Will be nice to see something regardless.
