Some roads along the shore are closed in Port Washington, and our backyard is completely flooded (luckily it's all still downhill from the house). I'm a bit surprised they haven't canceled afterschool activities. Not looking forward to figuring out a route to pick my kid up!

What is the latest thinking on arrival time?

Eyeballing 3-4 inches in Port Washington, and not coming down very hard at the moment. Was expecting less than easy is here, but puzzled that we seem to have less than LGA, which is west. Hope we get hit soon.

Lol we ALREADY lost power in Port Washington—how is that even possible?!

In NW Nassau, so far, got significantly more damage from a sudden unwarned thunderstorm a little over a week ago than I did from Henri. Inches of rain and still falling, no wind to speak of. I overprepared, which makes me feel a little silly but relieved to have power heading into the heat this week.

What time do you all think we should expect significant power outages to begin? I had thought it was tomorrow mid-morning but now thinking it could happen before dawn.

Apologies, I definitely did not mean to be confusing! I was just thinking of what people might think in my area to get blasted at 11:30 last night with warnings and then only see a rainy breezy day. I worry it will make them suspicious of similar warnings in the future. I admire the heck out of NWS and they have forgotten more then I'll ever know! It's just that alerts and public communication is a pet obsession of mine.

I don't have an opinion on whether this will happen since I'm only a weather enthusiast. But it would represent a huge warning fail for NWS, which is itself worrisome.

Same. Isaias was a mess for days and we just had a 1 day outage last week. I've never before wished a storm away--I'm not used to it!--but just can't deal with a multi-day outage in hot weather again.

Talked to a few people today on Long Island, including a police officer, who seem barely aware there's even bad weather coming. I'm in NW Nassau so there's less risk, but I do still worry about people getting caught flat-footed, especially since the power and even cellular service around here goes out for 12 hours if you sneeze funny.

Yes, I believe those people were in Orchard Beach

We didn't get a warning. We're directly across the Sound from Orchard Beach, so I suppose it was an extremely local intense event. PSEG estimates our power back on at 11:30, ugh.

NW Nassau (Port Washington) here, very quick storm but extremely intense. Tons of lightning and wind, though not a huge amount of rain. Downed trees everywhere. My husband had to drive on someone's lawn to get home. Our power is out. It was sunny after 5 before it happened and it's sunny again now. But!

I’m in NW Nassau, seeing lightning bolts over and over, yet no sound or wind. Not sure I’ve seen anything like it.

Are wind speeds supposed to increase dramatically from where they already are? Because it seems, to use a technical meteorological term, pretty blowy out there as it is.

Light snow just a trace so far in NW Nassau. The flakes have a gorgeous crystal shape but unfortunately they just look like a slide off amoebae with my phone camera!

Anyone know if the storm is meeting expectations south of us?

I moved here from the DC suburbs. We’ve already surpassed my last couple of dud winters! This is just gravy.

I first got interested in following weather because I couldn’t believe I had found other adults who also wanted lots of snow and thunderstorms! (Kids were always on my side.)

Glad to hear it (though sorry for anyone who has to work but doesn’t want the OT)! Lost our power in the December storm for more than 24 hours and still trying to get warm. I’m a little paranoid!

Ugh, lost power here in NW Nassau.

NW Nassau—there has been no sleet, moderate snow for a while now.

Lived there from 2010 to 2013.  I can recall seeing snow three times the entire time and the highest total was 2 inches. Watching January 2011’s extravaganza from down there was sheer torture.

We really have been spoiled up here the past decade.  I’ll gladly take 6-10” here in the city. I’d welcome the icy glacier that’ll preserve the pack too!

I lived in the area for 15 years. 2009-2010 was an amazing year, and got me into weather! 2016 was gorgeous too. But in general, it’s heartbreaking place for a snowlover to live. The rain-snow line will kill you always. I lurked on their subforum for years, and it was even more depressed than here.
