Whatever chance future Julia might have had to cross the Yucatan and be steered E or NE towards Florida/Eastern Gulf coast is fading fast as it stays S and stays weak.  GFS C. America landfall seems like a decent forecast.  Models and ensembles are coming into agreement on that.  Floridians probably don't mind a week or three of quiet weather.

Some GFS ensembles in S part of BOC after C.A. or the Yucatan, all seem Mexico bound

Selfishly I wouldn't mind a few weeks of calm in all of Florida. The last 3 fall vacations I've taken to Panama City Beach were:

August 2016 (Olympics were going on) and I was there during a week when it rained like 15 inches. No cane but just torrential rainfall and flooding

September 2018 - ran out after a few days due to impending Hurricane Michael

September 2020 - ran out after a few days due to impending Hurricane Sally

So we shifted this year to coming down Oct 15 for 2 weeks this time. My last 3 tries have not been great results.

  2. We live in Greene County close to the foot of the mountains and my dad called and I was telling him to keep an eye out on the weather for tonight or tomorrow and he said he pulled it up on his phone and it's showing the lows only about 36 or 37 and there's no winter weather advisories. And proceeds to tell me he's planning on driving to Telford tomorrow to visit his sister mid-morning.

The 98 snowstorm in NE TN was probably my favorite weather event of all time. I didn’t realize that Kingsport missed it. I know Greene County, Washington County, and other spots along the mountains got hammered.  Incredible snowfall rates with that system and by far the biggest snowflakes I’ve ever seen (in person or video). I really wish someone had video from that event. I’ve looked several times but never found any footage.

Lived in Greene County for the 98 snowstorm. I remember that it was my senior year in High School and I had a marketing co-op class that allowed me to get credit for my job (K-Mart) and I also had an off-campus. So I got out of school at like 11:30. I came home and told my dad that he might want to go get my sister from school because it was really starting to snow but they hadn't called schools out yet. He didn't want to listen to me for a couple of minutes then said oh crap and headed out to get her. They closed schools while he was on his way.

I was supposed to work that night from 4-10 and called in sick. My uncle was the assistant store manager and was not happy with me. But then the storm just blew up and everything got impassible. I'm pretty sure they closed most of the stores down by mid-afternoon with the snow just hammering down. Dad made it home with my sister from school just in time. Plenty of people were stuck trying to get their kids home.

I remember that storm as being kind of out of nowhere. Maybe I just didn't pay enough attention to the weather then but I'm pretty sure we got like 20" of snow or something close to that and if they were calling for snow it definitely wasn't that much to my recollection. The main takeaway I had was that it came hard, fast, and the flakes were gigantic. It was the hardest I've ever seen it snow in my lifetime.

  4. Just looking at the radar and knowing that it's mostly sleet now in Washington County unless there's something I'm missing - which is entirely possible - I don't see how we are going to get any accumulations at this point. But I am more of a lurker than anything.

I'm not in full panic mode since I don't understand everything like some of you guys do but I will say that if we don't get any real results from this one I will probably not believe anything until I actually see it going forward.

  5. Being east is winning this one.  Had ssw winds here. Killed everything.  East is getting e or ene winds and the snow line is holding fairly steady. Surprised the warm nose hasn't managed to make any progress that way but it seems to be stuck at Morristown or so.
I am in Washington County and it's now been 100 percent freezing rain and slush for over an hour. So I'm not sure where the snow line is but it hasn't been snowing here in a good while. I'm about ready to give up for the night and hope to see a little bit of snow in the morning I guess.

  6. I'm between Greeneville and Johnson City. In the past 30 minutes it's really started hammering snow. Nothing is more beautiful than this snow globe effect in the middle of the night. Hopefully everyone that wants snow will get enough to make you happy. Looks like about half an inch on the porch now.
