New 24 hour Wx Channel to start in 2014

well, this now will be 3 weather-based channels on the cable dial come next year. This channel (Network Weather), WeatherNation (Paul Douglas's company based out of the west end of the twin cities), and The Weather Channel we all know down in Atlanta. Is there any chance we may get a 4th, maybe A-W trying to spin up their own deal? Maybe Weathernews comes out of Europe and Asia and make a US Media division? Maybe someone else I'm not thinking of?

 

And how fierce could the competition get between them all?

marion, and i thought I was bad in high school when I would end my CC wxcast after the morning announcements either moonwalking off the set or spinning like MJ in the "Billie Jean" video.

 

but on the more serious side wx meddler, I did put my resume in speculatively down there earlier this evening for a behind the scenes position. .

That video of Mark was actually from several years ago, maybe even as far back as 2005? The Charlotte FOX station back then had no real identity and they went really edgy with their primetime news spot trying to grab viewers. He eventually got canned from there once it was decided that the show would be toned back down some. Apparently Mark has also had substance abuse issues in his past, he has bounced around from different parts of the country since his stint in Charlotte.

Thank you for saying (in some sense) what I was thinking. I thought the television market was pretty tapped out in the US, especially as the younger demographic increasingly turns to websites or smartphone apps over brick-and-mortar television stations. I do not know what market studies are being used to justify its launch, but I can't imagine another Weather Channel-type of company being successful in the long-term.

What if, instead of tailoring the channel to regular folks and Al Roker fans, its all nerds, all the time.  Nobody except people with Masters and PhDs.  U Albanay as a satellite studio with hourly Kelvin Wave reports.  And a couple of Chaser shows, a guy who flies to Mexico a lot, running as a weekly special early Winter after post-production, and a tornado chaser and his woman friend, running during the slow season between early June and late August.  The Mexico hurricane chaser, imagine if they gave him a camera crew with Skype?  Cut straight from Dr. Mike at the U-Albany tropical studio to someone on the beach in Lazaro Cardenas using 'hawt' as an adjective to describe what is happening.

 

With a couple of really good looking women with the MSU green screen certificate for an added draw for the nerd market.

 

Speaking of good looking women with the Miss State green screen training, Crystal Egger is taking another job and leaving TWC.

I don't think the vast majority of people realize who this company has hired...

The few Charlotte area posters (QC, Burger, etc...) know and I know...but I don't think anybody else knows.

Ladies and Gentlemen...here's Mark Mathis...

 

He spent some time down here at KSAT-12 in San Antonio before they realized the mistake they made. His style makes me think of a used car salesman with a bad cocaine habit.

Okay, but are there enough Ed Lizard-type of weather nerds that would make a channel financially feasible? I have no idea what the numbers would be, but my gut tells me they're not that impressive.

 

Also, I think you've been hanging out in the trop threads too long ;) . But maybe UAlbany can put a green screen room in that new meteorology building they're planning. Paul Roundy can then take his equatorial wave discussion to the airwaves.

Yeah, as nice as it would be for people like us, I can't see a nerd oriented network making it anywhere. In my experience, people want to be spoon fed dumbed down info without being forced to think in the process. After all, we are living in a world where thousands of people will fawn over an obviously faked pic of the sky, even if it had CREATED WITH ADOBE PHOTOSHOP stamped across it.

The Weather Channel succeeded because there really was no other way to get weather info besides the 6 o'clock local news. And if TWC nerded out, that wasn't too big of a deal because it was the only place many nerds could get weather info (unless you were in met school and had access to the fancy computers and stuff). Now any weather nerd can get a plethora of detailed present, historical and forecast/modelling data on the internet, mostly for free, on demand. Why watch TV and hope they show something you care about? A lot of people don't even do that for regular TV any more, preferring Netflix, Hulu and DVDs that fell off the back of a truck. This will be a failure.

Probably right.

Network news weather report and traffic is basically worthless in 2013. This is as bad of a decision as the new video rental store that opened in my town less than a year ago.

I don't remember the last time I watched anything weather-related on TV.

Great news!  I didn't see where it said Rich Johnson would be involved, though.  Love Rich & Dave!

 

When the Facebook page was first launched back in August Rich's picture appeared on the banner along with his name on the press release; I emailed him shortly after and he has already pulled out of this new venture.

Sadly, This won't work. Not in 2013/2014. TWC has the market dominated. There simply aren't enough viewers to make a challenge to TWC financially successful. Not in this era. Plus too many fragmented/segmented tv channels already exist for tiny slivers of the market that no one is watching.
