First 30”+ rainfall season at San Francisco since the 82-83 and 97-98 super El Niño’s. Also notice how the 16-17 heavy rains came close and were one year after the 15-16 super El Niño. Record March storm yesterday.

Wow, great stuff thanks.  My memory on all that was pretty good.  I now remember we (NYC) just missed out on the coldest January by a bit falling only behind the bitter January of 1918.  Wow, Philly crushed it getting to first place...hold my beer type of a record.  Incomprehensible we could get something like that today.  Two questions if you have time.  What were temperature departures like for February 1977.  I distinctly remember walking the 2 miles home from school and sweating at some point during that February.  What was the seasonal snow total for that winter.  I just remember one storm of note but I do remember what fell just kept building up because nothing melted for December and January.  Thanks!

1917-1918 was  a far superior winter to 1976-77 both in terms of extreme temps and snowfall, 1976-77 would have driven most of us crazy with dry and cold.

Yeah, 76-77 was the last top 10 coldest winter in NYC going back to around 1870. Places with a shorter period of record like HPN and ISP were the coldest. Was actually the coldest winter at Philly going back to 1875. Was the 3rd coldest Dec-Jan in NYC.

On the flip side, with its much shorter period of record, has JFK ever had a winter average below freezing?

Also, with the warmest winters there, wasn't March 2016 colder than December 2015?  So if included March in the rankings, would 2015-16 fall out of first in the rankings?

Chris-- two of your temperature tables are missing location headers.

Maybe it was March that was so warm walking home from school.  I just remember sweating on several days and thinking it was remarkable after the bitter January.  April 1976 had the 3 day heatwave at Easter when it hit I believe 96 in the park on Easter Sunday.  Was a dry heat though.

April 1976 was matched by April 2002, I loved that dry heat, the sky was as blue as I've ever seen it.

We also hit 90 in April 1977. 1977 had one of the top heatwaves on record (along with 1954 and 1993).

Latest Drought Monitor released this morning shows abnormally dry conditions have expanded over the Northeast.  Notably over SNJ into SEPA and over southeast Maryland.  Hopefully the upcoming rainfall over the next week moistens things up.  Moisture over the Winter was adequate for most locations but certainly not excessive.  We're not exactly going into the warm season overly wet, at least as of right now.

Several brushfires in CNJ yesterday causing train delays. Had to pick up my son in New Brunswick and it took 90 mins to get back to Woodbridge. Just snarled everywhere.

Surprised. I remember 2003-04 as a colder winter than the one before although both were quite cold. The mid January 2004 pure fluff clipper with 8” in the single digits is the coldest snowstorm I can remember.

January was the cold month  in 03-04. The cold was longer lasting in 02-03. But since January 04 was the 3rd coldest month for JFK, it was memorable.

Only 52 here.  Thought we were pegged for a high in the low-mid 60's today.  Guess the cloud cover is keeping the temps down.

The blocking high to the north kept the warm sector down near DC today as the front is stalled out across the area.

A frontal system extended across the northern Mid-Atlantic region today. The front separated mild air from exceptionally warm air. At Bridgeport, the temperature remained in the 50s. At Washington, DC, the mercury soared to 81°.

Tomorrow will be another mild day albeit somewhat cooler than today. A storm will then bring a cold rain to the region to start the weekend.

April could start on a cool, but not necessarily exceptionally cold note. As has been the case throughout the winter and early part of spring, the coldest air will likely remain in western and central North America.

Historic experience with very low snowfall totals through February argues that a very snowy March or big snowstorm during March or April are unlikely. There were 16 winters that had less than 8" of snowfall through February in New York City. Just two (13%) had a 6" or greater snowstorm during March or April: 1889-1890: 6.0" on March 19th and 1991-1992: 6.2" on March 19th.

With just 2.3" snowfall through March 19, New York City is now very likely to finish the season with less than 10" of snow. Since 1869-70, all 10 winters with less than 8.5" of snow through March 19th wound up with less than 10" of seasonal snowfall. New York City is currently on a path that could culminate in its setting a new record for lowest seasonal snowfall.

The ENSO Region 1+2 anomaly was +1.4°C and the Region 3.4 anomaly was +0.1°C for the week centered around March 15. For the past six weeks, the ENSO Region 1+2 anomaly has averaged +0.98°C and the ENSO Region 3.4 anomaly has averaged -0.26°C. Neutral ENSO conditions will likely prevail through at least mid-spring.

The SOI was +1.44 today.

The preliminary Arctic Oscillation (AO) was +2.133 today.

On March 21 the MJO was in Phase 2 at an amplitude of 1.730 (RMM). The March 20-adjusted amplitude was 1.850 (RMM).

Based on sensitivity analysis applied to the latest guidance, there is an implied 88% probability that New York City will have a warmer than normal March (1991-2020 normal). March will likely finish with a mean temperature near 44.1° (1.3° above normal normal).

New York City has the lowest seasonal snowfall to date through March 23rd.

Based on continuing ensemble guidance, there is little credible support for a late-season snowstorm in the New York City area. Instead, consistent with the very low snow cases through March 23rd, most or all of the snowfall this season is likely done.

January was the cold month  in 03-04. The cold was longer lasting in 02-03. But since January 04 was the 3rd coldest month for JFK, it was memorable.

Historical:

1912 - Residents of Kansas City began to dig out from a storm produced 25 inches of snow in 24 hours. The snowfall total was nearly twice that of any other storm of modern record in Kansas City before or since that time. A record 40 inches of snow fell during the month of March that year, and the total for the winter season of 67 inches was also a record. By late February of that year Kansas City had received just six inches of snow. Olathe KS received 37 inches of snow in the snowstorm, establishing a single storm record for the state of Kansas. (23rd-24th) (The Kansas City Weather Almanac) (The Weather Channel)

1929: St. Louis, Missouri soared to 92 degrees; their all-time record high for March.

1987 - A winter-like storm in the central U.S. produced blizzard conditions from South Dakota to western Kansas. Snowfall totals ranged up to 24 inches at Neligh NE, with 19 inches at Winner SD. Winds gusting to 60 mph created twelve foot snow drifts in Nebraska stranding thousands on the highways. (Storm Data) (The National Weather Summary)

1988 - Thunderstorms developing along a cold front produced severe weather from Minnesota to northeastern Texas. The thunderstorms spawned ten tornadoes, including one which injured five persons near Raymondville MO. (The National Weather Summary) (Storm Data)

1989 - Low pressure off the coast of Virginia brought heavy rain to the Middle Atlantic Coast States, and heavy snow to the Northern Appalachians. Cape Hatteras NC was soaked with 5.20 inches of rain in 24 hours, and snowfall totals in Vermont ranged up to 12 inches. Winds gusted to 52 mph at New York City. (Storm Data) (The National Weather Summary)

1990 - The storm system which produced heavy snow in the Lower Missouri Valley the previous day, spread heavy snow across parts of the Upper Ohio Valley and the Middle Atlantic Coast Region. Snowfall totals of 2.2 inches at Philadelphia PA and 2.4 inches at Atlantic City NJ were records for the date. Up to six inches of snow blanketed southern Ohio. In the Middle Atlantic Coast Region, snow coated the blossoms of cherry trees which had bloomed in 80 degree weather the previous week. (Storm Data) (The National Weather Summary)
