It was also due north, northwest of NYC. If you check those mornings, Newburgh was -18, Poughkeepsie was -19, I was -23 in Orange County Highland Mills, still the coldest temperature I've ever been outside in my lifetime anywhere.

I didn't check but I remember Albany being around -26?

Allentown at -15 woah, the Poconos must've been like -25 or -30.  1994 was also Allentown's snowiest winter on record.

The cold and snow that winter was somewhat well predicted after how historically hot summer 1993 was (still had the greatest heatwave I've ever seen-- 10 straight days of 90+, three straight days of 100+ at NYC and 5 straight days of 100+ at Newark with 9 days of 100+ overall!)

Yeah, 1994 was the last -20° in Albany and Poughkeepsie along with Eastern PA.

It didn't even get below 20 in Boston in January, that has to be a record.

It was their warmest also. So the -10 in February is a big mismatch.  They got down to -10 in February 1918 also. But -3 that January instead of just 23°.

The 12z Euro and NAM from yesterday came the closest to the 3° low in NYC. The HRRR was too cold while the GFS and CMC were too warm. The Euro usually corrects its longer range cold bias in these situations beyond 120 hrs once within a few days.

This sudden obsession with surface temperatures reminds me of weather enthusiast discussions in Europe, particular England. When there's not much else of interest to discuss, this is what happens.

Any time a large chunk of our subforum gets near zero there's interest.  Plus the winds were really cranking last night.

Right now it looks like more of the same for next weekend. SLP into the Lakes inundates the northeast with warmth at all levels. Shortwave energy further south lags behind and dampens leading to weak and late transfer and more of a frontal passage scenario for any trailing impulse. Snow is confined to northern regions, particularly the far NE.

Variability of ensembles giving me some pause, but the OP trend looks pretty clear to me. We really needed that initial s/w to hit a wall and get shunted east, pushing the baroclinic zone further southeast. That does not appear to be happening. So unless the follow-up wave digs to the GOM, we're in trouble.

With single-digit days becoming increasingly uncommon in New York City, the average interval between the first and last such day during a season has declined. Winter 2022-23's interval of 43 days (assuming today will be the last such day this season) is the largest since Winter 2014-15 when the interval was 48 days.

Some town in northwest jersey hit either -32 or -34 during that 1994 outbreak. I can’t remember if it was Sparta? It either set the state record or tied it. Throw that into all of the -20 in parts of the lower and mid Hudson valley. That was Definitely the most impressive in these parts since January 1961.

The closest that I could find was Sussex approaching -30 on 3 days in late January 1994 which was their coldest on record. That was the last of the historic Arctic outbreaks to affect our area. The big ones in recent years missed to our west like in 2021 and 2019.

I flew into LGA last night.   Needless to say it was frightening-we had to abort one landing and the 2nd was an armrest gripper.   Scary.

Wow, that's amazing!  I think that was the coldest for the Poconos too (MPO/ABE).  Add that it was a historic snowfall season for that region too.

So for that area, this outbreak was colder than either Jan 1977 or Jan 1985?  Snowcover must have been part of why.

Don do you think we could have another single digit day towards the later part of February?  We had one in 2015 on the last day of the month (almost March).  It must have been decades since we've had a single digit low in March.
