Listening to the Sports Hub picking up lunch today. Heard a promotion for East Coast Metal Roofing. If it touches 100 F on Labor Day at Logan, your purchase is free.......had to chuckle at that one.

how about another Sox sweep in the WS? I always laugh when I see those promotions

Dit should order a new roof. He's always convinced it's going to be over 100.

I never checked in on that furniture offer - we're not in need of new stuff - and wondered whether "sweep" meant that another 2004 or 2007 would count but 2013 and 2018 would not.

yup would need to be another 04 or 07. the fact that it happened once was crazy enough

labor day is 9/5 this year.... I was thinking zero chance, but to be fair it hit 102 on 9/7/1881... that is crazy.

Also hit a 100 on 9/2/53.

Hours later I still can’t stop watching this .  Good thing they have video to present the car insurance adjuster with or the negligence case.

Read an article about the incident that was posted on FB.  The explosion was recorded on the family's security cam, the security company then contacted the homeowner to check that folks were all right, a neighbor (?) picked up the video and put on Twitter and away we go!  Turns out there were thankfully no injuries and amazingly, that car wasn't damaged

what could have caused this huge gash on my cherry tree? Is this going to be an issue long term? Is there anything I can do about it?

Is that facing the southwest quadrant? Did it start in the spring? If so it looks like southwest injury. I’d let it callous and heal on its own. Painting the bark white before winter helps that. Basically the juices get flowing on the S-W side during sunny, warm stretches in late winter and then harder freezes start to split it. The white paint reflects the sun.

Can't tell if that was a physical injury - tree got whacked by something during bark-peeling season (May-June) or whether it's a fungal infection, though I suspect the latter.  Have you had any falling limbs, or anything, that could've caused the wound?  If it's fungus, there are fungicides available at nurseries and other places like Agway.  One would apply the chemical now, and perhaps wait until after several hard freezes this fall and then (carefully) scrape it down to healthy wood.  Waiting for the freezes ensures that ambient fungal spore levels are low to nil, and the wood will dry over the winter, leaving a hostile substrate for next year's spores.  Experienced nursery staff would be good people to consult.

Edit:  And/or what Dendrite posted.

Thanks…. I just noticed one higher up on the tree… same direction, that looks like it’s healed up/closed.

I’ll take a look at the fungus stuff just to be safe.

the tree appears to be healthy…. Fully leafed out, and putting out good new growth

I had that issue on a sugar maple, about 10 years old at the time, a couple years ago.  It’s has since healed over nicely with no apparent lasting issues.
