the weather now is MUCH more exciting than it was back then

Every snowfall season since 09-10 has had at least 1 top 10 snowiest month at one of our stations. This was also true for the disappointing 11-12, 18-19, and 19-20 seasons. October 2011 was the snowiest on record in NYC. November 2018 was 4th snowiest in NYC. May 2020 tied for snowiest with 1977 for the record late trace around the area.

We've had some amazing Januarys and Februarys too.  Funny thing about the 70s and 80s, Januarys were much colder back then but before January 1996 I had never experienced a foot plus snowstorm in January (too young for January 1978 to remember it), and they've become much more common since and one can argue our biggest snowstorms have now shifted from February to January.

Some pop showers now into NEPA and near NWNJ

Just had one over me here in southern Brooklyn. Don't recall seeing any mention of rain in the forecast for today. Look like lake effect or at least lake enhanced from the radar view.

Edit: NWS OKX did mention it in their AFD:

In addition, cyclonic to neutral flow coupled with steep low-
level lapse rates and the upper trough overhead, may trigger a
few showers and/or sprinkles this afternoon.

Temperatures are barely BN but it feels so much colder due to how its been.

The TV-mets will have to be more judicious in their weather segments when describing the day as cool, and be more pedantic describing it as an average autumn day.

Yeah, the only 70s winter that had impressive snowstorms by recent standards was 77-78. The 70s was the last time we saw a top 10 coldest winter in our area. Now its frequent top 10 or top 20 warmest winters.

It was only 6 years ago that Central Park experienced a very cold January and February, the coldest since 1934.

Yeah, February 2015 was our only top 10 coldest winter month since 2010. But there have been 9 top 10 warmest winter months since 2010.  Funny how the 14° warmer February 2016 went below 0° but 2015 couldn’t.
