Your making assumptions based off the lower Manhattan reports. 1821 just happened to have the perfect track for surge for Manhattan.  But it was less impactful for the region as a whole then Sandy

Only because it came in at low tide right?  It hit Cape May as a Cat 4 and was a Cat 3 right up to NYC that's amazing

Low tide was the only reason why it wasn't a bigger deal than Sandy.

Quick post to confirm: I think Bluewave or maybe Don posted this.

ONLY two successive months for CP 10+" are March-April 1983??

Once I know that, i can set up a tiny challenge with no financial reward.

Thanks,

Walt

That was the year of the broken rain gauge in NYC. So we may never really know the exact rainfall in 1983. While it was a very wet year, the NYC totals were significantly higher than surrounding stations.

https://www.nytimes.com/1983/12/31/nyregion/city-s-rain-83-record-is-in-doubt.html

The heavy rains that pounded New York City during 1983 may not have broken the annual rainfall record here, after all, the National Weather Service said yesterday. The only thing broken for certain, it said, was the official rain gauge in Central Park.

To no one's surprise, the Weather Service announced on Nov. 15 that the year's drenching rains in Manhattan had surpassed a record of 67.04 inches, set in 1972. As of early yesterday, additional rains were said to have brought the year's total to 80.56 inches.

But the Weather Service's data acquisition division in Garden City, L.I., suspected something was amiss because the Central Park readings were much higher than official measurements at Kennedy International, Newark International and La Guardia Airports.

So the gauge at Belvedere Castle in the park was taken apart. It was found to be leaky. A faulty weld apparently was allowing water to seep in the side and be measured with rain entering the calibrated opening.

No one knows how much rain fell in the park in 1983. But the Weather Service said that an official estimate based on nearby readings would be made and that ''it likely will be close to the record, either just above or just below.''

Thank you very much!  So, then i should reconfirm CP has never recorded two successive months of 10+"?

I am not sure if they know which month the rain gauge broke  in 1983. Newark had two successive months of 10+ In March and April like was shown at NYC. So NYC could have done it if the malfunction occurred after April.

I remember 1983 well I can confirm it was the rainiest year I have ever witnessed (which makes it all the more amazing that it was our hottest summer for a long time).  Wasn't it JFK's rainiest year?

I dont believe this malfunction nonsense, I was alive then (and so were you I think) and I distinctly remember that as being wetter than any other year I've ever experienced and that includes the post 2010 years.

They actually found the problem but never corrected the rainfall totals for the year. While the spring 1983 rainfall was memorable, it was no match for the extreme rainfall that occurred in August into September 2011 and October 2005.

In October, record rainfall of 22.14 inches soaked the ground, causing local flooding.

"October 2005 was by far the wettest month in the last 57 years that the Lab has been keeping weather statistics, with almost double the amount of rain recorded in any October, and easily beating the previous monthly 13.01 inches of record rain in January 1979," said Victor Cassella, a Brookhaven Lab meteorologist. "We received 17.23 inches of rain in five consecutive days, from October 10 to 15, with 9 inches on October 14. Only in 1954, when Hurricane Edna dumped 9.02 inches of rain, did we get more than that amount of rain in one day."

I remember October 2005 being an amazing wet month (even moreso here on Long Island) but NYC unfortunately didn't match the record from September 1882 because the last week or 10 days wasn't wet, came close but that last 10 days did us in.  Long Island though had 2 feet of rain that month.  But as far as yearly totals are concerned, I dont think 2005 was as rainy as 1983 was, it was all mostly in that one month.

2011 I would say was the second rainiest after 1983.  That August was amazing though.  As far as monthly rainfall totals at NYC are concerned, does the September 1882 record still stand or did August 2011 supplant it?  I see that's a thirty day rainfall record that includes parts of both months, so I'm not sure if NYC has had a 20" rainfall month yet (or 20" over 30 days for that matter, since those numbers are from EWR.)

Wow Edna must have been something- that was a Cape Scraper wasn't it?  So basically the 9" that occurred in Brooklyn with this past storm was out in Central Suffolk County with Edna.

Does JFK have these three years (and months) as their wettest too-  in 1983, 2005 and 2011?

1983 held on as the wettest year at JFK since they missed some of the most extreme rainfall in 2011. My wettest 12 hr and 24 hr record was the 10”+ on 8-14-11 in Long Beach. The wettest year at EWR and LGA was 2011.

Wow JFK hasn't had a 60" rainfall year or a 70" snowfall season (69 inches in 1995-96, damn that April storm which underperformed we missed by an inch!  I'm sure they undermeasured that season though, they all did.)

I thought we got 10" in that August 2011 weekend rainy day too.....do you happen to have the totals for JFK from that event? I'm pretty sure we all had 10" on the south shore of Nassau County.

edit- I see it now, 7.72.  I guess southern Queens got less than we did.

That was more than they got in Irene though right?  And about the same JFK got in the rains we had the past 3 days?  I wonder if 7.72 was close to their 24 hour or total storm records though.
