 Mesoscale Discussion 1048
NWS Storm Prediction Center Norman OK
   1251 PM CDT Mon Jun 21 2021

   Areas affected...northern VA...much of MD...northern
   DE...central-eastern PA...western NJ

   Concerning...Severe potential...Severe Thunderstorm Watch likely

   Valid 211751Z - 211945Z

   Probability of Watch Issuance...80 percent

SUMMARY...Clusters of strong to severe thunderstorms capable
primarily of isolated to widely scattered damaging gusts, are
possible this afternoon into the early evening. A severe
thunderstorm watch will likely be needed over most of the discussion
   area by mid afternoon.

DISCUSSION...Visible-satellite imagery shows a cluster of strong to
locally severe thunderstorms over WV moving eastward. This
thunderstorm cluster will approach the eastern panhandle of WV and
far western MD (to the east of severe thunderstorm watch #299)
during the next few hours. A cumulus field has developed over the
remainder of the discussion area from VA north to the NY/PA border.
It seems possible convective initiation occurs over central PA near
State College over the next hour.

Surface analysis indicates the airmass has destabilized early this
afternoon with temperatures generally in the upper 80s deg F with
upper 60s to lower 70s dewpoints. Modifying the the Pittsburgh, PA
8am raob for current conditions over central PA yields around 2000
J/kg MLCAPE. The Dulles, VA 8am raob was noticeably less unstable
this morning compared to the Pittsburgh, PA raob. However, strong
heating and moistening of the boundary layer east of the higher
terrain has resulted in moderate buoyancy over this area too.

The strong heating across this broad region has steepened low-level
lapse rates. As storms move into the region from the west, the
lapse rate profiles will support the potential for strong downdrafts
with the heavier water-loaded cores or small bow-shaped segments
that may evolve. Peak gusts ranging from 50-70 mph are possible
   with the strongest storms.

It is uncertain whether isolated storms will develop over eastern PA
during the afternoon or whether the thunderstorm risk will be
delayed until storms arrive from the west. This uncertainty is due
in part to large-scale subsidence likely suppressing activity on the
northwest periphery of Tropical Storm Claudette.

Looks like we also hit 90+ today (right around 3pm). Thank goodness for that breeze though! It made working outside somewhat tolerable.

Looks like there are currently some boomers over the horizon with another line of storms a couple of hours behind. Should be an interesting evening :)

Looks like they are right on your doorstep!  Kamu may get slammed with a pile soon too.

It's a PWS mounted on a pole way above my shed. It seems to track pretty well with other local readings:

This is an Amazon link to what I have installed:

no doubt there are much lower spots across Berks County than here in Western Chesco.....but with the NWS obs (see below) starting with today on the far left with not a sniff of a 90 at any location in the philly burbs....makes you wonder if your thermometer is sited in the sun (big problem if there is no heat aspiration shield) - if your station does not have a fan aspirated shield than a nice shady spot on the north side of your property will help outimage.png.5aa13db251116acf1e17a53235cb2c14.png

Kind of feels like we're splitting hairs here. I mean, here's the local airport (KRDG) less than a mile from my house and at a similar elevation, and I kind of have to assume they have a better setup than I do:

image.png.f0d2e3daa05206e9b2930a1a53743030.png

This is actually lower than what was recorded from the NOAA (highlighting is mine), though it says these results are still pending verification (which seems a couple of days behind):

image.png.bf9c9a7970b6f7933a813f8f291d0227.png

But you have raised a valid complaint in which my personal station certainly does not meet the criteria you have laid out. It's the first iteration of my PWS and therefore reduced cost was the prime motivator in getting one up and running. In the short term, I think I might want to rig up another remote sensor (Arduino, perhaps) to record and log shade temps. In the long term, I hope to be able to afford a much fancier unit. :)

That said, one of the things I was most looking forward to when buying my house was to be able to log IMBY weather data over the long term, so your feedback (and post history, and personal website which is btw awesome!) is most welcome, thank you.

Severe season in 2021 is a lol joke

Honestly after the last few years, I'll take it. It was getting pretty old losing power 4-5 times each spring/summer and having to mess with the generator.

Amazing how a DP of 69F can make a temp of 70F feel so miserable.

Picked up .20" yesterday/overnight. Looks like we'll be adding to that later on. Anything to keep the lawn green for another week.

Yeah I was contemplating turning off the AC before heading to work since temps are going to drop this afternoon but with how muggy it is this morning, it just wasn't happening

Yeah, after last June's derecho and having a crap ton of trees taken out, I'm down for a quiet severe season.

Feels like the front moved through. Still a bit sticky out there but DP down to 63F.

Meanwhile Newark is at 5th place for the warmest June and ahead of last year?  These warm/cool swings are and playing havoc with the monthly real feel perceptions.

Looking long range this looks like the final discharge of deep cool polar air left over from the cold season.

This summer sucks been like pulling teeth to get a hot day, of course today's 40% shower is a cloudy rainathon now and back in the 70's.

The western mega ridge from hell is screwing summer lovers in the east

So are you looking forward to it? I'm curious what you do outside in the hot weather. It seems many people who like it hot have a pool and/or a boat.

While I obviously can't speak for RS, and while I'm also an unrepentant snow and cold weather lover, I do love me some hot summer days on occasion. Specifically, hot, humid and sunny weather calls out to my inner crab-fisher. I call it crabbing weather because it somehow seems so right to spend a hot af day on the water, pulling up morsels of tasty goodness from the briny deep. Add ice-cold beer (and maybe an impromptu picnic bbq on the shore/beach) to the mix, and boom: * chef's kiss * heaven.

So what are everyone else's favorite "hot weather things to do"?

P.S. I do not have a boat but I do have a kayak. I mostly crab from seawalls/piers.
