 Mesoscale Discussion 0944
NWS Storm Prediction Center Norman OK
   1113 AM CDT Sun Jun 13 2021

Areas affected...portions of far southeast Ohio...southwest
Pennsylvania into northern West Virginia and northwest Virginia

   Concerning...Severe potential...Watch possible

   Valid 131613Z - 131815Z

   Probability of Watch Issuance...60 percent

SUMMARY...The severe potential is increasing across portions of the
Mid Atlantic. Damaging winds are the primary threat. A Severe
Thunderstorm Watch may be needed if storms continue to intensify and
   increase in coverage.

DISCUSSION...Multicellular clusters have recently experienced an
uptick along the southwest flank of an ongoing MCS, on the leading
edge of the cold pool. The MCS is propagating southward towards 80+
F surface temperatures, with upper 60s to 70 F dewpoints
contributing to 1000+ J/kg MLCAPE. Though only 25 kts of effective
bulk shear are in place, and mid-level lapse rates are generally
under 6 C/km, continued surface heating with the rich moisture in
place is expected to support robust storm development into early
afternoon, both ahead of the MCS cold pool and along the cold front.
Wet downbursts and merging cold pools may support at least a few
damaging gusts with the stronger (albeit shorter lived)
multicellular clusters. Damaging gust potential may be high enough
to warrant the issuance of a Severe Thunderstorm Watch over the next
   couple of hours.

We got hit pretty good here. Luckily my street survived but many neighborhoods around us didn’t. Power just came on. I am guessing a microburst hit. Our winds had to be over 70mph. Trees were uprooted and the ground wasn’t very saturated. Hail was 1 inch diameter. It lasted a good 15 minutes or so.

This isn't enjoyable. TimB you bitch about not getting severe storms and how it's gonna miss AGH County but then we get this shit. My powers been out for 4 hours and now most of my food is spoiled.

As far as the storm goes that had to be a microburst because I've never seen it rain so hard. Not to mention wind gusts were easily over 70 mph.

I was at wildwood country club and there was a whole grove of trees snapped in half. Likely some 100 mph gusts.

And yeah, rooting on severe storms has always rubbed me the wrong way. Many of the issues that go along with winter storms are avoidable (we’ve all seen how idiots drive in snow and ice here) but I can’t avoid a tree on my house or power being out and ruining what is in my refrigerator.

Sorry you lost things as a result of these storms. Not going to apologize for rooting for interesting weather, especially after an incredibly boring spring, but I can empathize with it sometimes being impractical to do so as a homeowner. I wasn’t home when the storms hit, I was out in Mars and did see a good storm with strong but non-severe winds and a lot of lightning (possibly the same storm cell as the one in question?), which as I’ve said before is enough to satisfy me. The power was back on at my house when I got home at 8:30, though it had been out at some point - not sure for how long but obviously not long. But I would guess if a tree fell on my house or I lost everything in my fridge as a result of severe weather, I would be able to return to enjoying a good strong to severe thunderstorm once I got through wrangling with the insurance company to get my house fixed or buying hundreds of dollars of groceries to restock the fridge.

But I have a few questions:

1. Considering my rooting for these storms wasn’t what made them happen, is it fair to be angry at people who enjoy severe weather when you are affected by it?

2. Regular non-severe thunderstorms can also knock the power out and destroy everything in your fridge depending on what the lightning hits. Are those also off-limits to root for? There are people in this thread that like their summers hot. I’m going to go ahead and guess that this storm might have been less severe if the hot weather lovers didn’t get their overperforming high of 87 yesterday. Where do you draw the line?

3. Go read any thread about a severe weather event in the subforums on here that get them frequently. Are all of those people (and there are quite a few of them) sociopaths/monsters?

Sorry for the rant, but it rubs me the wrong way when people make me second guess my enjoyment of severe weather. But the thing is, my conscience says you might be right.

One more thing: I apologize 100% for my premature comment about the Allegheny County split. Clearly that didn’t even close to happen.

We've been pretty lucky (or unlucky depending on your POV) here locally.  Yesterday was the first storm that actually hit us and it wasn't all that bad.  Most of them have been missing just to the west or east.  Sorry for those of you dealing with problems.  I've seen lots of down trees and flooding elsewhere, including my own old 'hood in Morgantown.

Actually, I've always been curious about this microclimate split we seem to have between north of the city and south.  For whatever reason, it seems south of the city gets much less incidence of true severe.  Does anyone happen to know why?  Is it simple terrain/geography?

Tim I love severe weather what I don't love is how everyone of your posts is always negative. You posted yesterday that it looks like the storms are gonna split AGH County and you were 100% wrong. That isn't the first time either.

Understood, and I’m really trying to dial back the negativity, but I understand that premature bust call yesterday was an egregious violation of that. Outside of that and a lesser comment I made earlier in the week, I don’t think I’ve been particularly bad since the end of our snowless March. Then again, the weather in April and May made me happy even without thunderstorms. The real test will be the next time we face adversity. Not the first time, but I hope it will be the last. I appreciate you calling me out on it, guilty as charged. I’ll work on it.

TL;DR: I apologize for my negativity, but I’ll never apologize for being a severe weather fan.

Mesoscale Discussion 0964
NWS Storm Prediction Center Norman OK
   1031 AM CDT Mon Jun 14 2021

   Areas affected...Portions of eastern OH...northern
   WV...western/central PA...and western MD

   Concerning...Severe potential...Severe Thunderstorm Watch likely

   Valid 141531Z - 141700Z

   Probability of Watch Issuance...80 percent

SUMMARY...Damaging winds and severe hail may occur as storms
increase in coverage and intensity this afternoon. Watch issuance is
   likely.

DISCUSSION...A mid-level shortwave trough over the Great Lakes will
continue to move southeastward across the Mid-Atlantic this
afternoon and evening. Large-scale ascent preceding this feature is
supporting an area of thunderstorms along the shore of Lake Erie and
into northwestern PA. The airmass across eastern OH into
western/central PA and vicinity ahead of the front is expected to
gradually destabilize through the early afternoon as diurnal heating
continues. The low-level airmass is not overly moist, with recent
surface observations showing surface dewpoints ranging from the mid
50s to low 60s. Still, the development of around 1000 J/kg of MLCAPE
appears probable by peak afternoon heating. Weak low-level winds
quickly strengthen at mid levels, and 40-50 kt of effective bulk
shear will support organized updrafts. A mix of supercells and
multicells along the front should pose a threat for both isolated
severe hail and scattered damaging winds as convection spreads
east-southeastward. Watch issuance will likely be needed as storms
are expected to increase in coverage and intensity through the early
   afternoon.

Was in Nashville from a few days.  Was hot and sunny in the mid 90s, and come back to severe storms knocking the power out.  Yeah, these kind of storms aren’t worth the excitement.  Looks like I won’t even be able to enjoy my last night before work tomorrow.

I’m wondering if the evening might actually be pretty decent once this round of storms clears our area. Kicked the humidity up a few notches again but might shape up to be a pleasant evening.
