I also find it fascinating (after not knowing this until last year) how predictable the annual mortality number is, among other things. In a country of 330 million with a variety of health conditions and causes of death, just a slight variation year over year. We’re a lot more predictable as a species than we think, which is incredible to me when looking through an individualistic lens.

Yup... the lasting effects also aren’t over. Eventually the government aid and beefed up unemployment and stimulus checks are going to end.

A lot of people will still be unemployed or under employed from what they were used too.

I think once most of the country opens up I don’t see why the bold would be true.   The hardest hit folks will be back working full time right?   There’s a huge cohort of people who felt no pain but those in service industries especially front line people in places like restaurants have experienced a big chunk of the misery.

Big fan of excess death data.  Everyone in my family is in the medical field, which likely makes me an internet expert.

Regardless of the data, they always tout that excess deaths neutralize the "reason for death" metrics.  More or less people dying relative to previous time periods indicate some sort of event or action took place.

Some of this is definitely people who died early because they refused needed medical care due to fear over COVID. It may be a small number, but it's real.

Like I said, it will take a while to untangle all of this and come up with official numbers for 2020.

There is no doubt that COVID is real and had a real impact, however. At the very least, it accelerated many deaths that may have been kicked out a few more months or years otherwise.

Eh, I think there is a reason various governments are talking about UBI now. Some parts of society are fundamentally broken now and will not simply bounce back.

I saw a family member this evening I haven't seen in 12+ months. She was masked-up and kept her distance, but she really wanted to see my kids and wish them a happy Easter, etc so she asked to meet outside at a relative's house.

She was asking about all of the traveling we have been doing between NH, MD, and DE (including many flights) over the past 12 months, and now we are also adding FL into the mix. She asked me point blank, "Aren't you scared to catch COVID? How are you doing this?" 

I was kinda taken aback by it. She is double, perhaps triple masked while asking this and like 10 feet away. This is a relative I have known my whole life. It was just a surreal experience. It really drove home for me how differently I am living right now compared to other people. There really are people out there who will not travel until the CDC/Fauci say they can. I find that just crazy.

I just said, "I am not scared of COVID." I couldn't think of what else to say. She seemed really concerned about this. We also talked about the vaccines, and my answers there were not compelling to her. I doubt I will be seeing her again soon.

It's going to take a long time for society to heal from this.

It's probably one of the variants. My daughter is a health professional at a New England College that just got whacked. She said a good many of the young people were quite sick.

True, it just killed people earlier at the very least.  It had a real impact on families.  The economic impact was high too.

Lot's of these incidents the past few months.   The San Diego area ones have happened multiple times and my friends there have heard and felt them. Probably just a bunch of random events with multiple causes and media is just focusing on it.   Some are claiming "sky quakes" which is a term I had never heard of before tonight and sounds pseudoscience. A lot of people are working from home etc and it's also easy to come up with exaggerated stories when you are bored or searching for excitement.  Still interesting though.
