fwiw... GFSv16 is back running (12z cycle). Unsure how it long it will continue. LI not much snow but some ice and looks like a fair amount of snow/ice I84 corridor or maybe north of that? Back tomorr

Warm up and rain is fine. You only get ice damning when temps are below freezing, and either sun or heat loss from your house melts snow on your roof and then freezes over your eves. Ice and snow shield under your shingles is very important to prevent water entering house. Minimum 3 feet up from gutters towards ridge. I have 6 feet.

Every house has this problem. It’s normal with this amount of snow and persistent cold. Insulation has nothing to do with it, that’s why people install heat tracers in there gutters.

CT changed the code to 6 feet after the winter of 10-11.   It was crazy here with all the insurance claims.   I just had our roof done this fall and they went up 8 feet.  No more roof raking for me.

Some have the issue more pronounced than others. Easy to see now with the cold and who is melting and icicle formation.

I gave gutter deicers and roof racked about 1 foot back. The deicers had a tough time keeping up. Chopped ice for about 4 hours today. Hope the 18z porn maps don’t come to fruition for the next 2 weeks. :lol:

It's got to be 1994, right?  I was about to post the other day how for my frame of reference, which starts about 1979 (I remember the blizzard of 78 but just barely), no other year comes close to 1994 for number of days that side streets were snow and ice-packed.  1994 must've had, Iet's say 4-5 times as many days with snow and ice-packed side streets than whatever year comes in 2nd.

1996 and its legendary snow totals had quite a few warmups along the way.  I remember hitting golf balls with a light jacket one day in mid February that year thinking 'this crazy winter is almost over', not realizing that we had a ways to go and that we'd go over 90 inches on April 10th, at least out in Brookhaven or thereabouts.

Yeah, the day that the Oilers and Bills had their historic AFC Champ game, is right after this event you're talking about had occurred. It was almost entirely snow up here from 287 on north, east, and west. Where I was (southern Orange County NY) there was a lot of snow on the ground even prior to this event. Everyone was into hockey all of a sudden because right - all of the lakes and ponds were frozen everywhere. With no exception. The fact is that we're talking about the height of the worst winter ever in the Northeast. On record. I was 11, turning 12. /nostalgic tear. 

The icing event you're talking about here did occur but it was in fact well under 1" of ice. Whomever said "inches of ice "is, I'm sorry to say ...wrong. There was no 2-4" of ice for this event. Goes to show you guys what a little flooding before an icing event of .5-.75 (that's what it was) occurs. That could easily happen again. Up by me at the time, this was just another all snow event in a string of many. I told you: I had drifts where I was that you could easily get stuck in up here on foot. It wasn't like the Northeast but more like the Mountain West, in terms of how deep the snow was in some places. You had to be careful out in the woods. It was laughably deep in January and February. We're in the middle of an active 2020/2021 winter here but if you turn back the clock to this time in 1994 - there isn't even the most remote comparison. Jan and Feb '94 are a good 8-9 weeks of the most brutal winter that we'll probably ever see here in the Northeast US. I'm 38, turning 39. If I spend the rest of my life right here in the Hudson Valley - I doubt I'll ever see a winter like that again. It was that extreme of an outlier. 

Yup, it was brutal. I'm also in HV a little north of Poughkeepsie. I haven't seen a combination of snow and cold like that since. I hit -23 that winter and spent a lot of time clearing ice dams off of my roof.

I never said 2-4" LOL.....it was more like an 1.5-2"  we got close to 2" of freezing rain here on the south shore of Long Island, it wasn't hard to measure, there was about that much of it sticking to my damn railings.

It was well over 1" here on the south shore, I measured it myself (wasn't hard to measure, I had over 1.5" inches of a clear ice sticking to everything.  There was very little wind, therefore no power outages and it looked rather beautiful outside.

We turned the soccer fields into ice hockey rinks.

All the towns street hockey "players" we had a few groups who'd play on different freshly paved streets all over the town.

 

All converged on the soccer fields, with ice skates.

 

Schools were shut down for the entire week.

We played ice hockey on socker fields monday thrhough friday.

The first day I was able to ice skate across town to the soccer field which was a mile skate.

 

Never experienced anything like it before or since.

Inches of ice.

Yeah see the post from Famartin's blog, we got between 1.5-2 inches of ice, central NJ has a very similar climo to the south shore of western Nassau county
