how is such a difference even possible, Don?

The storm rapidly developed along an Arctic front. Its heaviest snows fell north and east of New York City. Bridgeport likely experienced a localized heavy band within an area of heavy snowfall. Some additional accumulations:

New Jersey: Layton (3 NW) in Sussex County: 4.5”; New Brunswick: 10.0”; Newark: 7.5”

New York City: 7.6” (Mount Vernon just to the north and east of the City: 11.0”)

East of NYC:

Connecticut: Bridgeport: 25.5”; Waterbury: 18.0”

Long Island: Farmingdale (2 NE): 14.0”; Setauket: 18.1”

Much more recently, one saw a roughly similar difference over a somewhat shorter distance: The January 26-28, 2015 storm brought 9.8” to NYC and 6.5” to Newark. Islip received 24.9”.

1.6" new here since last evening.

This storm is the Energizer Bunny; snow intensity is increasing again.

16.5" total since Sunday.  13" at the stake.

Smithtown, LI

Crazy right? Still snowing here. Up to 15” (estimate) here adding from last night/today. And again that could be a little conservative since the other totals around me were higher than what I thought mine was. I see Central Park didn’t measure again but they probably made it to 17.5”, not sure how much snow regenerated over the city but there was a period of light snow overnight at Central Park too.

We had many rounds of snow last night, i guess we should not have been too surprised, the models all showed 1-2" additional for the island in the overnight hours

Snowing again right now. Snowing for 4 days straight, I don’t think I’ve ever seen this before.

The Jan 31-Feb 3 storm, now with 17.4 inches in Central Park as of 7 am this morning, now ties it for number 16 all time in NYC. It appears it will fall 0.8 inches short of cracking the top 10. In reality it probably did, but after the 16.8 inch report at midnight Feb1 they have only reported 0.6 inches in the last 32 hours? That's probably not correct and all anyone has to do is look at the observations from the last 32 hours to verify. It was probably closer to 2 inches since then at least. WTS the Consevancy still does a much better job than the zookeeper ever did. Oh those horrible under counts from years past. The horror, The horror.

So much incorrect reporting on this storm. TWC one of the worst culprits kept repeating the mantra this is a top 10 storm all time in NYC, which of course leads to the question why do I bother watching TWC. As the above plainly proves, at least record keeping wise it is not. I won't even bother with all of the other incorrect things I heard. Does anyone check facts before reporting anymore?

One shot at Boston. Their mayor declared a state of emergency and closed all schools when they were expecting 3-5 inches of snow? You're kidding me right? I believe their final tally was 1.2 inches at midnight last night as most of the storm there it just rained.

If it was 2-3 degrees colder in Boston they would’ve had 12” like places very close by did. Was an extremely close call there and models were too cold by just a tiny amount which meant mostly white rain in downtown and where Logan Airport is. Can’t speak for Central Park really but 17.4” wasn’t bad at all, may have been 18” but can’t complain too much.

So Boston Logan is basically our version of jfk right on the water. That is one insane cutoff though can’t think of too many storms with that sharp of a cutoff say between jfk and cpk

Just to further point out the ridiculous cutoff in BOS area. On Google Earth I measured 7.5 miles between Logan and Winchester, MA (1.2 inches to 18.2 inches). 16 inch difference going 7.5 miles NW of Logan. Thats basically the difference between JFK and LGA....Dont think there has ever been such a cutoff in our area.

This matches me pretty close.  13.5" now on the ground but 15" storm total (conservatively).

Yes..was up in Raritan and northern parts of Hillsborough  and they may have had 16-18. The amount of time we were in those death bands was relatively  short compared to areas just 10 miles to the north. Good storm but honestly did it even break into top 15 for our area?

I'm not complaining about the measurement at Central Park just nitpicking.

As someone who has followed this for many decades, if this same storm happened while the Central Park Zookeeper was taking measurements this would have come in at 13.5 inches or some ridiculous figure like that, and everyone at the NWS and local mets would have known it was wrong, but they would have logged it, accepted it and reported it as fact. That's why I'm grateful for the Conservancy, they're not perfect but their so much better than what was.

Yesterday someone posted in the SNE forum that where he lives in Winchester he measured 4 inches but on the other side of Winchester there was 16 inches. He speculated his area  that where he lived along the Aberjona River lies in a lower part of the town and that caused the great differences in snow between the 2 areas in town.

Topsfield Ma reported 5.5 while the bordering town of Boxford reported 20 inches.

Longtime  Boston WCVB  met Harvey Leonard said the storm had the greatest snowfall variance in short distances that he has ever seen.

That last band of moderate to heavy snow delivered a 1/2" of snow, so we're up to 17.5" for the storm.

And we got another 1/2" of very light fluffy snow from late evening through the overnight, so that brings me to 18.0' for this storm, which is just shy of my 19" prediction made on Saturday, but I'll take it. That last 1/2" was gone by 10 am though and I think the storm is finally over after 2 days of major snow and 2 more days of lingering light snow.  Simply an amazing event.
