I used to walk over the bridge on Columbia Road from Woodley Park to Adams Morgan late at night (I was a bartender as a grad student) and absolutely zigzagged. That was partly due to the post-shift drinks I partook in, but I also did it somewhat consciously.

i worked outdoors during that.  Early on they said they were in a white van.  Well, I use a white van at work.  Was doing a job near a school(after the little boy was shot) and that prompted a visit from a couple cop cars one day.  Work logos all over the van quickly showed i wasn't a threat.  But the zig zag and gassing up the car as fast as possible was a thing.

I heard some second hand info a few months back from someone who knew a nurse at Hopkins.  She was a pediatric nurse, but was transferred to the covid unit to help out.  She allegedly said that they were intubating patients in order to charge the insurance companies a higher rate for treatment.  Since there were not enough respiratory specialists, physicians began to intubate, subsequently causing other issues which lead to infection outside of COVID.

I'm only hearing that information secondhand and am not stating that it in fact true.... and it seemed to be the opinion of the nurse, but if it is true, then it ties back to the article.

The same thing has been said in the Winter thread seemingly 500 times

People keep asking the same questions. I don’t mind since I don’t expect everyone to scroll through the whole thread.  But maybe answering the same thing over when the answer isn’t pleasant isn’t the best for the mood of the thread.

Last night on Chincoteague for a much needed mental health break. Rented a house on the Bay on the Northern end of the island. Have enjoyed some nice warm weather. Some beautiful sunsets and skies on fire. Finished off the week with a brought in shellfish feast of which there was nothing left.

Lovely photo scene, Mrs J....what dreams are made of. And thank you for “not” showing that delicious dish before eating. Not sure I could have made it through the viewing. As always ....

Is that something like the definition of insanity?  Not for you, but for those asking the questions, hoping for a different answer!!

RIP Daryl Grove. I don’t know if anyone else here is a member of the soccer community.  Daryl hosted imo the best soccer show (Total Soccer Show) for the last 11 years. He was a constant advocate and friend of anyone involved in the sport.  He was a great ambassador for the game. More then that he was a wonderful person. Always positive. Always friendly.  Willing to help whenever possible. Once he got a bad review by someone saying the show was “soft” and he joked that it was a compliment because the world needs more softness.  Even though I didn’t know him well personally I heard his voice almost everyday for 11 years and he made everyone feel like family.  He responded to every message. He was welcoming at fundraising events. It really hurts.  I’m sure others who met him at events and listened feel the same way but a piece of my life is gone. I wish I knew what to say but I don’t. I just wish I didn’t have to say anything at all.   The world is just a little less today with him not in it.

Words to describe loss and a sense of feeling often fall short. Yours didn’t. As always ....

i agree with you on this.  Only stating secondhand information.

All in all, it seems that intubating anyone way too soon is probably a high risk and should be avoided unless it is necessary.

The truth is this.. When new york was having its surge, they were seeing 7,000 new cases per day.  After a couple of weeks when people began to die, they we seeing upwards of 1,000 deaths per day.

Later on in the summer Miami had a much worse outbreak, with about 10,000 new cases per day lasting for over a month.  There death rate during that same period was about 100 - 200 deaths per day.

The difference in the statistics is staggering.  Whats more, if you factor in the fact that of the 10,000 cases per day in south florida, there was probably a ten times more people who were infected.. and also take in to account that for the 100 people a day dying in Florida, we know that this is over inflated given that Florida was over reporting deaths. This isnt some conspiracy theory... it is fact. They actually fired someone over this.

I know this sounds insensitive.. 100 people dying a day in Miami from an upper respiratory infection, I am pretty sure is par for the course for a typical winter.

Again.. WTF happened in New York City?

Most of the teachers want to be back in person, most of the parents want to be back in person.  It is such a simple solution:  if mostly everyone wants their kids back in school.. just stop paying the teachers now, take away state funding and announce a tax holiday.

Anyone get their thanksgiving turkeys from Shonuf Farm in Fulton, MD?   They get good reviews and we’re looking to get a farm fresh turkey this year.

http://www.shonufturkeys.com

I have, but it’s been a long time ago. I don’t remember the details, but the turkey was good. I had to be sure it was the same farm because the name has changed, and though I might be being duped because I just read it on their website, I want to say that their turkey was more moist and didn’t dry out. If I was to buy a fresh turkey again, that’s where I’d get it.

One factor is that from March 25 to May 10, nursing homes in NY could not deny admittance or re-admittance to people positive for Covid or suspected to have it, which led to thousands of Covid-positive people being admitted to various facilities and spreading it around.

One can also make a decent argument that the heavy use of public transportation in NYC, particularly the subway, was also a factor.

Maple Lawn. I think the owners names were the Eiger’s. Some old folks called it The Eiger Farm. Way back in the 80’s, I lived in Burtonsville and there was an awesome Italian farmer that set up shop out of his pickup truck right next to the church across the street from the farm. My training training rides (I was racing bikes back then) would take me through that area several times a week, and I’d stop to chat with the old farmer and he’d stuff my jersey with peaches. He always called me Tony In his thick Italian accent and we’d play a game every time I stopped by where he acted like he was giving me the peaches for free, and I’d always leave a buck or two some place where he’d find it later. He was such a kind and interesting man. In 1994, I got married in that same church across the street, but like the turkeys, it didn’t last.

I have another half of a tree worth of wood left  to split, but I think I am done for now. I'll wait and see how things progress. Don't want to stock up too much, as it would surely put a nail in the coffin of our upcoming Nina winter.

Nice splitter.  Splitting wood is good exercise.  Built a log splitter for my senior engineering design project in school.  Still have it 35 years later.  Uses two cylinders mounted inside the edge of the I-beam to slide a "box" with two wedges against two end stops.  It splits wood in both directions to avoid the unproductive return cycle.  Works 4 guys to death.  Have some Locust to split myself when it gets colder.
