Major Hurricane Laura

The good news is that there’s no datapoint for the surface on that sonde so we don’t know exactly how high that is. Sondes measure wind instantaneously so it may have caught a gust in a mesovort.

This is my thoughts as well. I just have a hard time believing this is consistent with that portion of the eyewall.

So... at the very minimum this 'sonde told us that Laura has gusts ~175-180mph. Welp.

Gusts at that pressure level. We don’t even know how high that is above the surface because there is no sfc data point.

AF300 just found extrapolated 932

FL winds in excess of 145 kt too.  SFMR still just shy of 130 kt, so seems like sustained winds are holding.

So this was about an hour ago in the NW quad from the P3, just for reference.

That was from an hour ago on the drop, but it was the eastern eyewall. It was from NOAA2. The AF300 dropped the last one in the NW Quad. Still pretty intense for that one.

For what its worth, and this may be because it's Brownsville, the Hurricane Warnings in the areas closer to projected landfill now say to prepare for Cat 2 winds, 85-105 with gusts to 125. Earlier they had Cat 3 winds, 100-120 w/ gusts to 150. 85-105 is bad enough though. :(

There are extreme wind warnings now all along the SW LA coast.  Those Warnings get lifted when winds of 115mph+ are anticipated.  Not sure what you are looking at....

Timmer just showed on his stream a McDonald's that appeared to be open for business. Of course. :wacko2:

I should've copied & pasted the warned winds each time. Regardless, with the EWWs now in place, the different wording in the warnings mean nothing anyway.

ADT has been 6.3-6.5 for at least 12 hrs now. This has a very stable core.

Those cold cloudtops around the eye are PERFECT

Ironically, despite all the talk by many of us of the SW shear weakening the system prior to landfall, it appears SW'ly shear has had literally zero effect on the storm. There's a large amount of colder cloud tops on the W and SW side of the system, whereas if shear had made any difference it would be the opposite.

Appears that Laura's impressive, strong outflow might have proved no match for the s/w over Texas.

Lake Charles is a very bad position. Surge through the Lake plus likely the NE eye wall. The western eye wall is looking very vigorous as well. Hopefully that stays east of Port Arthur.

So far Lake Charles has the highest winds & lowest pressure of the obv stations I've seen, 29.50", winds 40 gusts to 58. I know that's all getting ready to change though.
