I used to all the time, but then my kid was caught in a rip current and I had to haul him out. Ever since then I am nervous about it, for myself and others. I know how to escape a rip current but that doesn’t remove all concern.

Have not gone swimming in the ocean for 25-30 years.  With my spinal fusion at C-4 in 2011, I probably should keep it that way.  When I'd body-surf at Reid or Popham, occasionally I'd mis-time a wave and get driven head first into the bottom.

Last thing you need in life at this juncture.

Happens, key is to not panic, overswim. Yes being a beach lifeguard is a whole league different than a pool, lake guard. We averaged about 10 saves a day when the rips were ripping. I had one guy try to drown me as he was in total panic, punched him in the mouth, dove under and grabbed him twisted him around and came up with my arm under his chin to get him in. He was drunk to boot. Quickly escorted out by the staties . 75% of days were lake conditions though. If you are at a beach and its rough stay at knee level and watch them kids like a hawk.

Wow!  For contrast, I was a lifeguard 4 years at the NNJ lake where I grew up and had one rescue - and on that I merely swam out to the swimmer in trouble and accompanied him in, never had to touch him.  In the 90 years of that community, there has never been a drowning at either of the 2 beaches, and on a busy day there would be perhaps 300 total at the beaches.  The only drowning was at a tenth-acre "feeder pond" one late winter 45-50 years ago when a 2-year-old went thru the rotting ice.

Not really, That's basically wading.

Not that fun. I never go past knee deep anyway at the beach. I like the just getting my feet wet and building sand castles with my kids. But give me a deep pool and I’m doing flips and ski jumps off the diving board...or give me a lake with a cliff.

There were days where there were 15 to 20 thousand people in a 3/4 mile section of beach with 20  lifeguards

The water is the only place I  can exercise without pain. I have abandoned the double overhead waves and only ride 6 feet and under which I can manage easily. The ocean is a part of me and will be forever.

Where did you find that graphic!?  I didn't know CoCoRAHS had that ability... awesome.  I looked quickly but couldn't find it.

New Graphics maps come out tomorrow,  this is a preview

That’s very cool, thanks for the update Ginx.  It made me check out my most recent CoCoRaHS email, which has this:

Big News – The Long-Awaited CoCoRaHS Interactive Mapping System --  Coming on August 1
Some of you have been helping test our new interactive maps and have provided great help and suggestions. We will continue to make improvements after the release, but we are as ready as we can be to finally share it with everyone.  I'll spill some of the beans here and tell you that one feature of the new map will allow you to view accumulated data for a custom period of your choosing.  It's really neat to view totals on a map showing the last week, or month, but we did have to place limits on how much data could be compiled at once.
We’ve found and fixed most bugs – and it works well when a few dozen people are generating their favorite maps.  The big question is will it bog down when 10,000 of us are enjoying these new maps at the same time.  We will find that out real soon, but we've definitely made sure that data entry won't be affected if the map is overwhelmed.  So keep your fingers crossed, and keep your eyes peeled for the new map on August 1st.
