I just feel so angry at this time.  And I do what therapists advise, such as pounding a pillow, yelling for a designated amount of minutes, taking a brisk walk.  I also feel frustrated, particularly when I skype or talk with extended family members that still say the virus is no worse than the flu and direct me to a number of fake news websites to prove their point.  The failure of political leadership to help ease a transition which could save many lives is also depressing.  What has happened in this country to make people so gullible and suspicious of science and facts?  Psychologists tell us that when we challenge a person's previously held worldview we are dealing with the fulcrum of the human mind and we seek out people and sites that will reinforce our prior assumptions.  Copernicus, Galileo, Darwin and Freud brought us new revelations about the universe and ourselves.  There are some who still think we never sent astronauts to the moon.  I've had both a scientific and theological background in my professional training and I respect insights from both fields of knowledge. But it grieves and angers me particularly wrt this pandemic that people cannot take a clue from the "greatest generation" who willingly sent their sons and daughters off to war and faced rationing of food, fuel, and other materials for the common good of the nation in a patriotic effort and so many of us say this pandemic is not as severe as we think and quibble about wearing masks.

It is very tough for a lot of us here especially because a good portion of us come from a scientific background, I am glad that most here are the way they are though. Unfortunately this place and other science based entities are not like the rest of the country, and sadly far too much of this country believes in nonsense and falsehoods. It is sad to see the devolution of people right before our eyes.

The path we are on is unsustainable. We are going to lockdown one way or the other

Do you honestly think a national lockdown will be imposed during this administration? Like really, if we got to a certain point would they be forced to finally do something?

The hospitals are going to dictate that. Already talk of nurses going on strike because they are burned out

That’s another thing too. It just really seems like the path we’re on is not sustainable for hospitals and something has to give

OMG WHY ARE THERE SO MANY DEATHS. Thank you trump. Worst president we've ever had. I cant wait for biden to end this absolute nightmare. No I'm not being sarcastic I'm being serious

Bad as it is there will be probably double this number per day 3 weeks from now. Even if we turned on a dime and all socially distanced and wore masks tomorrow, it wouldn’t make a difference for several weeks. Trump and his enablers have been absolutely disgraceful through this whole pandemic, no doubt about that. 2/3 or more of these deaths could have been avoided with a cogent national strategy, or even if Trump didn’t mock masks and didn’t hold superspreader rallies. Germany and Canada having 3-4x fewer deaths per capita shows how badly we failed, much less countries like Australia, S Korea and New Zealand. A few years ago we were rated as having the BEST preparedness for a pandemic.

Couple the number of deaths with the fact we’re economically suffering much more than we need to and the disgrace by our “leaders” gets compounded even more. No one can say either that we didn’t see this huge fall wave coming. It was predicted many months ago and we just didn’t prepare or take the precautions seriously.

Man I can remember when you were a raging Republican, my how the times have changed :lmao:

Seriously though, what we need to expect is that there is leadership, and like you say, there is a complete lack right now.

I guess you can say I’m a Lincoln Project Republican lol. A disgrace is a disgrace no matter which party has power. And this is up there with the worst ever among people who have any honesty.

Toronto going into a lockdown Mon @12:00am. All gyms, fitness centers, restaurants, bars, hair salons, recreational centers, casinos, convention centers and I believe shopping malls are all closing. Only essential stores like grocery stores and department stores will remain open. All restaurants will be offering curb-side pick up or delivery only, no dine-in. We been averaging >1000 cases a day for a few weeks now. When compared to you guys its nothing obviously but 85% of these 1000+ are in the Toronto area. Hopefully other American cities follow through.

Italy is peaking at 35,000 cases/day. Adjusted to US Population that's 192,000. About 20,000/day (~12%) above the current 7-day case average for the US. So our infection rate is almost as bad as Italy with 5.5x the population.

Also, data from southern U.S. and some other countries is suggesting strong seasonality influenced by latitude but not necessarily temperature dependent I know UV radiation flux has been brought up before. Would  partially explain why places like LA County, SE Texas/Louisiana and Florida was now spiking again. Other more southern latitude N. hemisphere countries (e.g. Turkey, Pakistan) have starting spiking at the same time. doubt that is coincidence.

That's the biggest problem. Too many entitled people thinking nothing going to happen to them

Or people want to pay their bills? This is their livelihood, and there is no PPP. They worked 10, 20, 30 years to build up these businesses to have it taken away from them this year. Talk to me when you can't afford groceries for your kids or to keep your heat and water on.

This is the result of broken govt. No one should have to choose between death/health and financial ruin.

I agree. But that is the choice we are at right now unfortunately. Must be nice to be in congress and leave for thanksgiving break 10 days before its even here while earning 175k a year working a few hours a week while the American people struggle.

This economy vs. health has been debated ad nauseam. No one here is going to change anyone else's mind.

A lockdown will be the death knell for thousands of businesses, since there is no government support. It would also drive millions into bankruptcy. The problem that with nothing being done other than "mandates" and a vaccine being several months away, many of these businesses will go under anyway, as customer traffic will be reduced due to people not venturing out with the threat of infection. As these businesses close, unemployment will once again increase.

So, until Congress gets off of their duffs and passes some financial assistance legislation, we will be stuck with the choice of a slow agonizing spiral into depression or a quick economic dagger. As I see it, those are our choices for now.

I think we're about 3 weeks away from 3000 deaths per day on average. The 21 day lagged CFR has been running near 1.8 percent or so.

Did some reading and it seems the best match is anywhere between a 16 to 21 day lag (how much lag depends on individual states and other factors). Even a conservative 16-day lag gives you 1.5-1.6% CFR. That is 2500+/day in by 2nd week in December. Unfortunately its going to get ugly in a hurry, what you saw this week is just the start I am afraid.

This thread is getting much to political, btw.

Less cases today in IN than last Saturday, but there were 7000 fewer tests.  Either because of testing issues or less people feeling the need to get one.

Minnesota has much than last Saturday too, but with similar number of tests. Multiple states in the region are showing some signs of a plateau in cases and positivity.
