this is absolutely nuts.

Just saw a clarification that all Buffalo city schools closed thru Apr 20, not all Erie County schools (yet). But yeah, nuts.

It is all of Erie County schools not just Buffalo. Also 4 new cases just confirmed in Erie a county bringing the total up to 7 confirmed cases and its only going to rapidly spread as at least one of the cases had a child who attended school all week last week (obviously not knowing that their parent was positive for the virus).

Try having 3 kids and 2 parents with full time jobs. A lot of people are going to lose jobs over this. And if this gets worse, which is inevitable, schools could be cancelled into May.

I have 1 kid and my fiancé is 27 weeks pregnant. I’m terrified of bringing it home to her with all the unknowns that it can cause newborn babies. It has been confirmed in Europe that it can be transmitted in the womb to the baby and women who get it and have high fevers may have to give birth early which their lungs aren’t even fully developed at 27 weeks, then add on a serious respiratory illness such as corona virus to an already underdeveloped set of lungs and it’s not good news. My job is considered an “essential” federal employee so the only way I get off is if I contract the virus and am mandatorily quarantined from it. I already talked to the Union who basically told me to do what I have to do but there’s no garuntee I won’t be let go if I voluntarily quarantine to try and protect my family from getting it. Not to sound ignorant but if I was single or didn’t have a kid under 1 and another one almost here I wouldn’t be so scared but to be honest right now I’m honestly terrified and freaking out and don’t know what to do. This is a situation I’m sure many of us could never have even imagined, I know I sure never could have and I’m praying somehow we all make it through but this is quickly turning into a nightmare.

You'll be fine. For people in their 20s, the severity of symptoms are a little bit worse then the flu.

It seems based on the numbers that younger people seem to not be prone to it either. Very low rate of getting the virus. Hopefully they have a vaccine in the next 1-2 months and all the worrying can stop.

Oh my. That is very difficult to read. Praying for you and your family.

I think many of us are sharing similar sentiments as you. I am required to be at school this week to teach, and any of my students could easily be undetected carriers. We have made it optional attendance, but parents are messaging me sharing how this is such a scary time of so many unknowns. If we're closed for the rest of the year, I could very easily see many families' jobs, including my own, being cut. My wife works in an accounting firm and this is their BUSY season, so there is no way for her to stay home...so she's interacting with people and their mailings from all over the country. So many different circumstances for each individual. Just a reminder of how small our world really is when looking at the big picture.

May you have some clarity and peace about what lies ahead in such a confusing time.

I’m still having trouble comprehending  these past few days.  It’s like we’re in a movie.  We always get these scares and they go away but this time is so much different for some reason.  It’s not stopping it just keeps getting crazier every hour.  Cities and States are starting to close down everything except grocery stores and pharmacies.  Make me nervous as we are going to turn into ground zero for transmission sites soon.  In fact just saw LA is even closing down gyms!  There is literally going to be no where to go!

I'm currently on hold with United Airlines for 2 hours. Chase travel portal customer service is 12-18 hour wait time. I cannot do anything online. This is brutal....

I was thinking of just disputing it with Chase and getting back all of my money for all my reservations. I am covered with a $10k trip insurance policy through the chase freedom sapphire card. What would you recommend?

Just saw this.  Did you get through?  I'm not sure how travel insurance works as I've never bought any.  I don't know if the insurance cover a situation where you cancel flights/hotels. Of course in this case the situation is unique to say the least...I guess I'd try to figure out what the insurance will cover...

I dont know if the young person rate of infection is less but certainly the effects are reported to be on the less severe side.  Of course with minimal testing having been done to date, I don't think we know if susceptibility to infection varies any with age grouping.

Is it possible for your wife and child to self quarantine on their own? You would have to live elsewhere (friend, family), which she and/or you may find completely undoable but just thinking of options.

I didn't buy travel insurance. It comes with the card. (up to 10k). I have to call tomorrow to dispute the charge.

I was a bit pissed yesterday watching the idiots still going to the downtown bars in droves. What that reinforced to me is our selfish and pretentious society. Stay home. This virus does not scare me, but the closures of businesses, schools, restaurants and yes even many of the Vegas casinos now as well does. The faster we get this under control the faster we can get our lives back to normal.

I think the bigger danger that isn’t being talked about is what countries like Iran will do as the bottom of the economy completely falls out. We’re taking entire populations and pushing them into corners as hard as we can, and now expect them to stay put and starve. They will riot, and all the containment efforts will go to shit.
I’m surprised Putin hasn’t annexed another slice of the Ukraine yet.

This is a huge societal issue and I don't see it being addressed nearly enough.

The biggest source of good paying jobs in my area is health care.

The demands for work hours from doctors, nurses, respiratory therapists and everyone else in the hospital is skyrocketing.

And at the same time we are telling them their kids aren't going to school for a month......

So how exactly does this work?  You're an ICU nurse with a 6 year old and an 8 year old unexpectedly at home and you're supposed to go work 12 hour shifts.......What gives?

Temperatures will be
in the vicinity of 60 degrees at most locations by Friday morning.
Model guidance has struggled with the strength of this surface
low, with gusty winds possible both ahead of and behind the front
deepening on how this works out. Temperatures will rise into the
60s ahead of the cold front on Friday, with 70 degrees not out
of the question. This combined with dew points near 60 may support
a stray thunderstorm with the frontal passage.

With the passage of the trailing cold front on Friday, it will be
much colder for the weekend. Consensus 850mb temperatures drop to
around -15C, which supports the possibilities for some lake effect
snow showers Saturday. The rest of the weekend is shaping up to
be a dry and cold as high pressure builds across the area on
Sunday.

From NBC news

Tri-state governors and local leaders jointly unleashed an urgent call for more extensive federal leadership on the coronavirus crisis Monday -- calling for uniform U.S. standards on crowds, immediate infrastructure assistance on hospitals and established rules on closings nationwide.

In the meantime, tri-state governors are taking a unified stance on their own to help curb the spread of COVID-19, which has already killed at least eight people in New York and New Jersey.

New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo said Monday on a call with Connecticut Gov. Ned Lamont and New Jersey Gov. Phil Murphy that they had agreed to several rules that would extend across all three states -- unprecedented coordination among states to help slow the pandemic that has infected nearly 1,000 people already across the tri-state area.

By those rules: There will be no crowds with gatherings over 50. Casinos will close Monday night regionwide, as well movie theaters and gyms. Bars and restaurants will also be shut down for dine-in activities as of 8 p.m. Monday.

We want everybody to be home, not out," Murphy said -- and the only way to ensure that is to have a standard set of topline directives and restrictions.

All three governors blasted the federal government for "falling asleep" at the wheel, lacking testing preparation, failing to provide urgent and specific guidance at the national level and bringing in the military to streamline and facilitate efforts. They said the absence of strong U.S. leadership on these key matters has left them with no choice but to try to do it themselves.

"We've got to work on this together," Lamont said. "The feds have been asleep on the draw. If we do this on a regional basis we're gonna get through it."

Murphy said he would expand on new statewide directives to be announced at an afternoon news briefing, but said on the call that all non-essential businesses must close at 8 p.m. nightly; non-essential travel is "strongly discouraged" between 8 p.m. and 5 a.m.

At this point, there is no plan to shut down mass transit in its entirety, but Murphy said they're working to find the "right-size" capacity to match reduced ridership. Ridership has plunged across the board amid new directives and the urgent, consistent call for "social distancing."

Great point. It could come around again, post containment in US. Hopefully we’ll have a vaccine by then.

I’m reluctant to make this political but I think we are seeing what happens when an anti science guy withno appetite for learning is confronted by a global health crisis.
A situation like this can make or break a politician. It might be old news by November but I’m starting to think the economy is gonna take a while.
Im still buying stocks. IVV SAN and QQQ today.

I'll make it political. The dude is a joke and how he got elected makes me question the majority of people living in this country. I cannot stand someone being so anti science being the most powerful person on the planet. Unfortunately Biden has no chance to beat him and the idiotic democratic party manipulated the media and its other presidential entries into backing Biden who has early stages of dementia...This country is *******....
