Central PA Feb/March 2019 Disco: More Snow In Our Future?

Recommended Posts

Saw NWS Pittsburgh put this on their facebook.

It looks relatively accurate for the region with Harrisburg riding just inside that 36-48". There's even a tiny red dot just about where Cashtown is haha. It checks out here as I have 51.2" for the season (right within my average range). I had 54.6" last winter, but it took the 13.5" March 21-22 storm and the 4.7" April 2 storm to bust into the average range. I don't know if we'll have quite the prolific late March/early April stretch we had last year but it should be fresh in our minds that it can happen with the right setup. I personally hope after our potential period (week after this one) that we bust out of it with April rolling in.

Another day, another temp bust as I see readings already in the upper 50's (on the Wundermap) around the LSV area.

Most of the higher temps are West of the Susq but a Hershey ob of 59 is the highest.   GFS and NAM both had everyone staying 50 or below.

Edit-I would never say anything about a 5 degree bust but when the temps are more than 5 degrees over forecast, area wide, I thought it worth mentioning after the bust yesterday.   That Hershey OB just punched 60.

I'm running a few degrees cooler today than yesterday. I'm currently at my daily high of 51.2

That is kind of why I noticed the high temps especially the West Shore near Harrisburg.  I walked out this afternoon over here and noticed how much cooler it was than yesterday so I expected to see similar or lower temps over in Harrisburg and am seeing Weather Underground reports of 57-60.  A day late for the Euro's liking.   Its only 52 here right now.

Its kind of depressing in here.  No talk of cold and snow, just 50 degree temps. At least we have Sauss talking about beer to get us through this!

I just mentioend it because our two American models had all of the LSV staying below 50 today so yesterdays EC bust turned into an American one today though not sure what the EC had for today.  Someone posted a coastal in the MA fourm from the EPS Control!

Yea... Euro ops has a storm off southeast coast at the same time but no cold air to be found.

JUst saw the EPS snow map and it is snow on that one run but I agree that cold air is an issue for anything not intense enough to pull its own down from the North East.

Yea the control run you posted is showing snow.  The ops at 240 is slower than the control run, the storm is still to our south.  Being slow would allow the cold air to retreat before the low would reach our area, thats if it even makes it up the coast. Its kind of crazy for me to even get into detail over a day 10 threat. Lol!

really, really nice outside. This is drinkin weather.

who am i kidding, its always drinkin weather @pasnownut :drunk:

@sauss06Right on brotha. An old friend once told me during a bad round of golf at his club “just drink through it”. I now apply that to various facets of my life. Spring is one of them. Least favorite season.

God rest your soul OB. Hope you’re a scratch golfer in heaven. You sure weren’t here.

Full meltdown here today. The very gusty downsloping winds and March sun were enough to get temps in the 50s and as a result we've lost way more remaining snow than yesterday. I think most of the yard will be making a reappearance by the end of the week.

How many days are you at with the pack or should I say glacier?

Nearly a month, since Feb 12th. Prior to that I had a run with snow on the ground from Jan 9th til later in the first week of February and about 4-5 days with the November snowstorm. Obviously the high amount of sleet in the numerous mixing events this winter was a factor but it's been a pretty good run with the snowpack retention this winter here. Most of the yard is still covered but both neighboring yards to mine are not.

Nice!  You had true winter living there.  Its hard to make it past a week down here.

I agree! Plenty of time to talk about temps & Thunder storms for the next 6 months.

We have 2 to 3 more weeks of winter storm tracking before hibernation begins.

Next week has a chance!

I post this map & no response ...wow!

I guess that I should just argue about my high temp for today...

Just kidding... see you for the 0z Euro that will hopefully crush us tonight for next week!

I'm not responding to getting <2" while the entire Mid-Atl/NE I-95 sees 12-24+ hahaha.

If I'm not mistaken, that Euro control run looked like a triple phase. The Euro op was heading for a phase but was missing the vort dropping straight out of the Hudson Bay the control had that just made that thing go bananas on that particular model. All models have the huge ridge out west, although progged a bit east for my liking when talking ideal trough alignment to track a prospective east coast storm that slams C-PA. Still way out in range, I see the rumblings with the occasional model run having a big storm but nothing definitive enough to jump on yet.

To play devil's advocate, severe weather is much more fascinating than a weak clipper blowing through. The intricacies of helicity, shear, VBV, instability make or break a system, and the incredible process of huge towers going up and all coming together into crazy weather. Maybe I'm wrong, but mid level snow storms are kinda just run of the mill disturbances with frozen liquid instead of rain. Im expecting this to be unpopular, but I enjoy both.
