DTW smashed the record low max and record low the last 2 days. (The  Record low yesterday was unusually high for this time of year, but it would not have mattered anyway)

Jan 30th

Old record low max: 7°

2019 max: 1°

Old record low: -4°

2019 low: -13°

Jan 31st

Old record low max: 7°

2019 max: 3°

Old record low: -7°

2019 low: -14°

DTW was below zero for 37 consecutive hours. Back on Jan 6-7, 2014, I think it was just over 40 hours. To happen twice in 5 years is amazing.

As an FYI, in the 146 winters since 1873-74, there were 39 winters where Detroit never fell below zero. The warmest min temp for a winter was 11F in 1997-98, the only winter there was no single digit temp recorded.

Congerville about to lose its extreme cold state record

CONGERVILLE — Last week, five weather professionals joined a conference call from their respective climate-controlled offices in Champaign, Kansas City, Asheville, N.C. and Davenport, Iowa. They were enlisted to be the final arbiters of a central question that had lingered over two Illinois communities, like a stubborn blast of polar air, for the better part of a month.

Not a lot of people were awaiting their answer. The decision mattered deeply to almost no one.

Yet there it was.

Congerville or Mount Carroll?

Reigning champ, or former champ?

A farm on the banks of the Mackinaw River in Woodford County, or a water and sewer plant next to Point Rock Park in the county seat of Carroll County in northwest Illinois?

Rick Dickinson or Bill Zink?

Minus-36 degrees, or minus-38 degrees?

“We look at three things,” said Ray Wolf, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in the Quad Cities who was in on the conference call that would decide a new state cold temperature record. “Was the (temperature) reading meteorologically plausible in the context of the weather of the day; was it taken at a government-endorsed weather station that is archived, and was the observation taken on equipment that was working properly?”

The answers? Yes, yes and yes.

Here is the detailed report on the new Illinois state record low temp (-38) at Mt. Carroll on 1/31/2019:

https://www.ncdc.noaa.gov/monitoring-content/extremes/scec/reports/20190305-Illinois-Minimum-Temperature.pdf

Good thing this unscheduled visit occurred recently...otherwise the record may have been invalidated.

On 17 October 2016 the NWS COOP Focal Point made an unscheduled visit to the site when WFO Quad Cities meteorologist reported temperature readings too low when compared to surrounding locations. Upon arrival the COOP Focal Point discovered a separated LIG minimum thermometer and replaced it with a new thermometer. Since replacing the thermometer, reported temperatures were in line with surrounding stations and no further issues were found during subsequent annual visits. The current minimum thermometer has been in service since this visit and was inspected annually for accuracy.
