Islip got 18" I think.  Had a decent amount (6"+) in my area too.  Just can't remember how much.

that was backside snow that often gets mentioned but rarely occurs

Of course people's expectations were much higher than just some backside snow.

We had 5" here in SW Nassau, I think Patchogue got a foot?

That was the highest amount I saw mentioned on Long Island.

SW CT got a lot more.

Yep. This storm legit sent me into a month long depression as a 15 year old. (Yeah I’m a bit strange)...One of the NE forum members has a nice write up if you google it, but back then the 12z euro didnt come out until evening times, and if im remembering correctly there was no 00z euro. I think one of the 12z euro runs finally backed down, but the AVN stayed on board for a bit which is why forecasters had trouble reversing courses. Ill still always remember JBs newsletter few days before. What a bastard storm. I also remember Ji and Noreaster hyping it up for a week on wright weather lol...what a beautiful 500mb though, so damn close.

and then a four month long depression in the nonwinter of 01-02.....

Among the highlights or LOW lights  that month in NYC were:     10th.    6  17,     11th.    5  17,     12th.     6  18,       17th    0   19,      18th.     0   15,       22nd.   8  18,       27th     9   25.

The April 06 Blizzard was probably triggered by the EL CHICON Volcanic Eruption at the end of March.

When winter was winter. One of the biggest arctic outbreaks of the 20th century

Atlanta had 3 days of 0 or below weather that month, most of any month on record.

2-3 days later a huge snowstorm affected most of the eastern U.S., 6"(+) from Atlanta all the way to Portland. That storm is infamous for the DC Air Florida crash into the 14 St bridge then ultimately falling into the frozen Potomac River.

The late 1970's thru the mid 1980's had significant arctic outbreaks nearly every season.

but less snow especially during the 80s with a suppressed storm track outside of Feb 1983

Hmm was that eruption actually in late March and wouldn't that be really soon for the snowstorm to occur after the eruption?

More likely it was the emerging super el nino to come next winter.

Same thing happened in April 1997.

Well the eruption was in Mexico and immediately went into the upper atmosphere and caused odd blue skies and sunsets.      In addition, the number of nuclei (particulate matter) for snowflakes to coalesce on of course increased greatly.        Surely,  a favorable pattern was in place prior to this enhancement.         The T actually remained below 32* for an unnaturally  long period of time.       The NWS issued a Blizzard Warning for even NYC at 4am that morning.        The next day was sunny and windy with blowing snow at ground level.     T was 34*  on the 7th.

Jan 13-14, 1982 & Jan 22, 1987 were not suppressed, Feb 22-23, 1987 was huge just south of NYC

looking at NYC during the 80's, yikes, I didn't realize it was that bad, only 69% of the long term average over the decade

Philadelphia was better at 91% & Allentown, PA even more so at 94%. At Allentown 5 of the 10 seasons during the 80's were above average snowfall wise. Here in the northern Philly burbs during the 1980's snowfall was often significantly higher than the reports coming out of the airport. Most noteworthy was FEB 22-23, 1987, we had 18"-19" while PHL checked in with less than 7". Locally JAN was an excellent month during the 1980's however FEB & particularly DEC were lame. From a decadal standpoint JAN during the 1980's is the 2nd snowiest JAN on record behind 2010's. Combine the snow with the brutal cold during that decade & what snow fell stuck around. At Philadelphia there were 100 JAN days during the 1980's with at least an inch of snow cover whereas the 2010's with 18% more snow recorded 64 such days.

  • 3 weeks later...

I'm always gonna remember the December 2010 blizzard fondly, I was only 10 years old at the time but it was a big stepping stone in my love for the weather and snow. One of the biggest reasons why it ignited my interest is because the BDB was my first time measuring snowfall totals. I don't remember exactly what I got but it was somewhere around 15-20" (the total in my signature is more of an average of what the surrounding area around Lindenhurst got according to the final PNS for the storm). It may have also been my first time ever going sledding too, until recently (for obvious reasons) I'd gone sledding in every big storm since then.

Almost forgot the last reason, we had a weird Christmas Break schedule that year and we were supposed to go back to school for three days that week (Mon/Tues/Wed) before getting off again for New Year's. Instead they just cancelled all 3 days because of the blizzard lol. Despite that last part the Boxing Day Blizzard was the first time I truly feel I was in it for the storm itself rather than the snow-days, and while it wasn't even a top 5 event for me during my life (kinda crazy writing that, I really was blessed to get to grow up in the last 2 decades) It'll always be one of my favorites:snowwindow:

Tldr: My feelings on BDB: :snowing:
