Ed did you get around 60 inches in 30 days?  What was your maximum snow cover?  I think we had a 3 month constant snow cover that winter!

No such luck.  From 12/26/2010 - 1/27/2011 we had 51.4" (33 days).  We only had 12" in the 12/26 blizzard.

2010-2011 Snow cover (2N Smithtown):

  • 1" or more from 12/27 - 2/28.
  • At least a trace from 12/27 - 3/6.
  • 20"+ from 1/26 - 2/3.
  • 10"+ from 1/12 - 2/17.
  • Max depth 27" early on 1/27 (not recorded...was 25" at 9AM obs time).

  • At least a trace from 12/27 - 3/6.
  • 10"+ from 12/27-2/25  (I think, my snowpack records are light during January until 1/26 when I recorded 14")

It was a good run for the coast.  2 months of 10"+ @ KMGJ is a nice winter.

2011, 2014, and 2015 were good snow cover winters here.  I'll run those stats when I get a chance.

This winter, we wait for the MJO to find it's MoJO

At least there is some positive news on that front today. Still plenty of prime snow season left. The island especially does well late season when near shore water temps are cold. Which they will be after this next cold blast.

but we're also going to get multiple days in the mid 50s next week, I hear people want an early spring and to put this to bed already.  I want a 2012-13 style comeback but I can understand why people dont want to go bankrupt over heating bills.

like last year winter will say hello when it's time to say goodbye...this year when the ao went negative we got extreme cold...Last year when the ao went negative we got big snows...lets hope that changes this month...I'm still waiting for the big one and I think it will come this year...TWT...

Nice to see some positivity. I agree, while it may not be a blockbuster KU I think we get at least one solid warning event sometime between 2/15-3/15

Two things I was hoping you could help me with......

Do you have a list anywhere of all 10+" snowfalls at NYC and JFK?  I wanted to average out the numbers of such events per decade.

Also, do you have a list of all accumulated snowfalls 0.1" and higher at NYC and JFK between the winters of 1979-80 and 1995-96?  I wanted to match up data with my memories.

2010-11 got the good pattern back too late...we had a very cold end of March with snowfalls on 3/21 and 3/24 in Westchester, but it was too late to get more than a few more inches. I remember there were still patches of snow on 4/1 in Dobbs Ferry, and there was some snow/sleet that mixed into a rainstorm in mid-April. That winter did not want to go. Had 3 huge storms from 12/26-1/26...there was 25-30" on the ground after that and then again after the 2/2 ice storm. I think I measured 26" in my front lawn. It was a glacier too; I still remember the moon reflecting off the snowpack as I went to visit a friend.

One thing that really stands out to me is how few times there were more than one such storms in any particular year. It happened more in the last 18 years than the previous hundred.

The other thing is how some decades really sucked- the 1880s were horrible outside of the Blizzard of 1888- much like how the 1980s were horrible outside of Feb 1983 and April 1982.  April 1982 doesn't even make the list because it was just under 10"!  So both the 1880s and 1980s only had one storm of 10" or more for the entire decade and both were historic ones.

Thanks for this!  Can I get the data for the 80s and early 90s from that link too?  I averaged it out to 66 over 15 decades so just over 4 per decade so a bit less than 50% odds of having a 10" storm per winter.  It was only 46 through 12 decades though if you just go up through the 80s so just less than 4 per decade at that point, so less than 40% odds per winter.  And just 13 over 4 decades or about 30% per winter if you go from the 50s through the 80s. No decade in recorded history had more than 6 or a 60% chance in any given year in that decade, until the 2000s that is lol.  The 2010s have a decent chance to be the first decade in recorded history to have double digit 10"+ events and average one per year for the whole decade, and already have 9 if you include the December 2009 event as part of this decade.

*actually if you consider 2001 as the start of the 2000 decade, that decade had 9 of them (90% odds in that decade to have one per year- and 100%-110% odds if you include Dec 2000 or Jan 2011 which makes for 10 or 11 in that decade!) while the 2010s would only have 4 so far if the latter is included in the previous decade.  This is because of the amazing 3 we had in the 2009-10 winter (and would have easily had 4 if we didn't just miss out on the early Feb 2010 event) and 2 in the 2010-11 winter (which was almost 3, since NYC had just over 9 inches in the storm in between)!  So 5-7 of them over two years!  Based on that no decade had more than 5 or 50% odds per year in that decade aside from the very first one and the last three!

Interestingly enough, most winters of the 1880s were actually over 30" in NYC. There were probably several smaller snowfalls throughout the decade.

40 inches in February

The retrogading storm was the best up here at the end of February. The storm tracked east of LI and rotated north of NYC and then south of NYC.

I had 4 inches of snow in the morning , drizzle in the afternoon and 14 inches of thundersnow at night.

Regrettably this was a week before I got my first digital camera.  It may have been the reason I got my first digital camera.  Good memories and stories from that, including being on the Kings Park Bluffs in blizzard conditions on the 6th and picking up a friend at ISP during strong winds and relatively light snow late in the evening on the 5th.  He had moved from CT to FL a few years earlier and was blown away by the conditions walking across the parking lot to my car.  That also gave me respect for small airports; air travel was severely messed up and that flight landed at ISP right on schedule despite strong winds and and snow and about 8" on the ground at that point.  There wasn't much more snowfall overnight, but we ended up with 16" on the ground after part deux.

This was a 2 part storm

I had 6 inches one day and 8 inches the next with a blizzard warning

I ended the winter with 64 inches.

The outrageous number of 10+ events in back to back winters, 2009-10 and 2010-11 (even including the near miss) will probably not be repeated for a long time.  But I also said that after 1995-96, yet the back to back combo of 2009-10 and 2010-11 was probably a more rare occurrence.

Gloria is my first weather memory. Watching LIPA remove the top of the big Norway maple in front of my house after it split and took down the power lines. I would have loved to have been a little older for that one. Probably the strongest winds during my life time with a brief period of 90mph gusts with what was most likely a sting jet caused be extra tropical transition.
