Nov. 25th-26th Midwest Snowstorm Potential

Slushy mess in NWI. Grass still peaking out. Roads aren’t too bad but I expect they’ll worsen for the morning commute. Walking in to the office felt like being sandblasted in the face. Interested to see what this mess on the ground becomes once the temps plunge.

Sitting at 4.3” here... still snowing but lightening up. Deformation snow moving this way but weakening quickly. Might squeeze another inch or two out before it weakens and moves east. Roads are absolute garbage due to the heavy wet nature of the snow. 

 

Power went out to boot. Lots of weight in the trees - reminds me of an ice storm, minus the ice and add plaster. Makes for a beautiful sight though.

Looks like a couple inches in Howell.... nothing all that impressive. In fact, this would be my 3rd biggest storm of November 2018.

Power has been out here since around 2:30 AM.  Have a 3 month old so thankfully it's not below zero outside. House has been staying fairly warm

A lot of fallen and sagging trees this morning from the heavy snow. I took averaged measurements and came up with 14.0" for my location N of Davenport. Looks like the QCA airport received 13.8" officially, so not too far off. From what I  understand this is their biggest November storm on record breaking the previous record of 9.9" on the November 2015 storm (Moline, IL). At least that is what I was told. Surprisingly though not a lot of photo ops, but I already fell on ice and hurt myself, so I came back inside lol.

Interstate 74 between the QC and Galesburg is still at a standstill right now. Unbelievable. I imagine still some blowing snow out there in wide open Henry County, IL. It'll probably be Tuesday afternoon before I can make it back down toward Galesburg and especially Macomb. 67 north out of Macomb is still very bad along with most McDonough and Warren county roads according to my EMA source.

Thanks man!  Yeah we did well with GHD2 in 2015 with around 15". Picked up 11" in this year's March 24th storm. Definitely had some good luck this year. The March storm had a very sharp cutoff about 25-30 northeast of here, so felt very fortunate to get what we did.

That screw zone in north central IL that was talked about last night is evident in the LSRs.  Generally only 3-6" in LaSalle county.

Interesting little tidbit from the DVN morning AFD.

The powerful early season winter storm that produced blizzard
conditions (gusts of 40-45mph), a heavy snow band of 8 to 14+
inches, and quite a bit of thundersnow, is finally winding down.
Incredibly, some places near the Quad Cities had 0.75" of rain
before changing to snow, which prevented storm totals from
eclipsing 20 inches.

 

Here's the time lapse from the event.  I decided to set a cooler out in front of the camera to show some perspective, as the red portion of the cooler is exactly 12" tall.  Unfortunately I screwed up and didn't put it out far enough, so you can only see the top lol.  Woops.  I also shot a night lapse of the snow falling after sunset, but the falling snow made it so bright it blew out all the images.  

One thing of note during the vid, you can see the snow actually melted a little bit during that 1.5hr lull after the changeover.  I didn't notice that at the time.

Quite a few split and damaged pear trees around the neighborhood - eyeballing it we ended up 6 or maybe 7 inches of very heavy wet snow.

Looks like Chicago O'Hare had 1/2 mile visibility for only 2 hrs (2 Metars total), along with 40-41 kt peak wind gusts. They had 3/4 mile visibility and -SN at other times.

Wow! That is awesome! I'm still trying to process this storm, but man was that amazing! I was starting to really sweat around Noon when we had not switched over, and we adding up those rain totals, and it was as if someone switched a flip. From moderate rain to now, and within minutes everything was white! Amazing! And we want even start with the snow drifts late last night! 

13.8 officially now at MLI = The biggest November snowstorm on record. The biggest since the Superbowl Feb 2015 storm. Last year, we had all of a trace up to this date!  So who's excited for Winter to begin in about a month?

The driving rain turned into a driving wet snow and I guess there was a nice heavy burst at home. Picked up 0.7" of slush, much of which has already melted but since I did not expect anything I can't complain. This is already our 8th day with measurable snow this November now just to get a big one. It's hard to be impatient in what has been a wintry November but I am definitely ready for full fledged Winter.  And seeing the snow scenes to my West makes me want it even more. I'm sure people in Minnesota and Wisconsin must be pulling their hair out with as cold as it's been and the lack of snow so far over there.

Backyard measurement says 9", have to look at LSRs later to compare given the drifting going on around the neighborhood. 

Never seen anything like that storm with respect to the impact on the power grid: transformers blowing and power flashes lighting up the sky at least once every five minutes for a little bit there.

Anxious to see the actual snowfall map.  Looks like the Euro had the best track of the models but was off on the precip amounts.  As the event got closer the high resolution models also did well.

Euro continues to perform well over the past few winters.

Ours has been out since about 10 pm. We have a one WEEK old, so left for the parents’ house around 1 AM. Power lines down, electrical fires, cars stranded. Got a kerosene heater going to keep the temp up in the house. Who knows when it’ll come back on.
