southern Brooklyn and Queens got 21" of snow in Feb 1961...the snow changed to sleet and freezing rain (mostly sleet) in the morning hours...I remember walking around the school yard near my house and seeing the sleet drifting...there was around 10" before the sleet and 10" after it changed back to snow on NW winds...Bensonhurst Brooklyn measured 21.0" from 3.05 LE...no mention of sleet...Even in NYC climate data no sleet is mentioned which is odd...The snow was like cement...there was 7" on the ground from two weeks of below freezing high temperatures and numerous snowfalls when it started...28" snow depth midnight 2/4...The temp finally went above freezing briefly when the storm ended late in the afternoon...this broke the 16 straight days with a max 32 or lower...still the record in NYC...

I got sick with a fever the next day which was a Sunday and coukld not go out...I was 11 at the time and all I could do is watch my friends play in the mountains of snow...when I got better schools reopened...

it's weak el nino winters that are the culprit, they tend to be cold and dry.

1977-78 was an exception but only because it was a second year weak el nino and so behaved more like a moderate el nino.

Our biggest snowfalls happen in moderate and strong el ninos and also weak la ninas.

Thanks for some great stats.  Is there information for the number of 4 inch plus events per season for central park?  I'm thinking the average may only be 2 or 3.

UncW you and I made some interesting posts here lol, I wonder if there is a list anywhere of the number of 1"+ and 6"+ events in different ENSO winters.
