August 2018 General Discussion

Recommended Posts

The line of storms that moved through here this evening was fairly tame.  I picked up a half inch of rain, with very little wind, and some decent lightning on the back edge.  All the real action was in the Iowa City area.  I'm over 7 inches of rain for the month.

Some key numbers to watch

8/27 record high min:  77

Latest 79+ degree low:  82 on 8/21/1916

Latest 78+ degree low:  78 on 9/7/1922

No low temperatures warmer than 77 on record between 8/25 and 8/31

Record was indeed broken.

Well this month has been one wet month around here. I have recorded 13" inches of rain this month with most of it coming in the last 2 weeks. This is by far the wettest month i've recorded so far. I have feeling at least where I am it might be the wettest August ever. All the  rivers are at least bankfull stage with some going higher than 2008. The Kickapoo, Upper Baraboo, and the Yahara seem to be the wort affected so far. Around here the Crawfish is at it's stage since 2008. And the rain looks like it's going to keep coming for at least the next week. We really need to dry out in Southern Wisconsin.

With a few minutes left this August and essentially the core of summer, I'd give it a pretty good grade. Nice and hot, but more clouds and cloudy days than the first part of summer here. The no thunderstorm streak was broken on midnight of the 29th with two storms in 3 hours.

August finished +3.5 F at Toledo and rainfall was 4.82", Thankfully, the minor drought in NW Ohio is mainly over. +3.5 F for a summer month is quite a lot. There were 5 days above 90 degrees, which is not terribly unusual. Days that were a couple of degrees above normal included almost the whole month..
