These torrential flash floods and mud slides are getting worse than winter in terms of having to check what roads I can use to get to work each morning... Luckily for me I've either passed before or after so no major impact.

We were in the pool yesterday and all of the sudden a blast of cool air dropped the temperatures and within 5-10 minutes all hell broke lose. Nice example of gust front induced storms.

From the WPC heavy rainfall discussion, flash flooding a concern again today:

 PWs near 2 inches (2.5
standard deviations above normal) and modest deep-layer
instability should support organized convection along and ahead of
the boundary. Lift will be enhanced by a pre-frontal mid-level
shear axis and broadly diffluent flow between the retrograding
upper ridge and trough moving across east-central Canada.
Meanwhile, the uptick in sw-wsw low level flow ahead of the
surface front (25-30 kts) will foster backbuilding convection and
cell training, especially over the Slight risk region later this
afternoon and evening when the low-level inflow exceeds and
becomes more parallel to the 850-300 mb mean wind (Corfidi vectors
in opposite direction of the low-level inflow, thus bolstering
upwind propagation). In addition, much of the Slight risk area
(especially western PA and eastern OH) has lower FFG given the wet
antecedent soils. In fact, the latest (00Z) HREF 40 km
neighborhood probabilities of 3 hourly QPF exceeding the FFG peak
between 50-60% across far eastern OH and western PA between 21-00Z
this afternoon and evening.

Got nailed in Bethel Park again. Some flooding. Not as bad as a few weeks ago from what I see so far. These storms had more wind and a lot of trees down. Power outages. Haven't been out to check anything out yet. I live right near the Trolley Stop. I'm sure they got nervous all over again there.

The slow movement of the storm allowed it to backbuild to the northside, and intensify as the whole system moved SSW.

Had decent winds out the NNE along with the rain and hail. Also lost power for a couple hours.

For tomorrow from the SPC

...Appalachians/Upper Ohio River Valley and Mid-Atlantic States...
Widespread convection within a moderately sheared environment will
create the potential for a relatively active severe weather day
across portions of the Appalachians/OH River Valley into the
Mid-Atlantic, but poor midlevel lapse rates and the impact of early
day precipitation/clouds on destabilization may tend to mitigate
this threat to some extent. The severe threat should begin to evolve
by late morning/early afternoon, as midlevel flow and effective
shear gradually increase and pockets of heating/destabilization
develop in the wake of early morning convection. Thunderstorm
redevelopment is expected along the cold front pushing into western
PA, and also across the higher terrain of the central/northern
Appalachians. Effective shear of 30-40 kt will be sufficient for
organized multicell clusters and perhaps a few supercells. Corridors
of locally damaging wind are likely to be the primary threat, but a
couple of tornadoes are also possible, especially with any supercell
that interacts with differential heating boundaries that may evolve
   through the day.

Mesoscale Discussion 1334
NWS Storm Prediction Center Norman OK
   0116 PM CDT Tue Aug 21 2018

Areas affected...Parts of western and central PA...WV...and the
   western MD Panhandle

   Concerning...Severe potential...Watch possible

   Valid 211816Z - 212015Z

   Probability of Watch Issuance...60 percent

SUMMARY...A severe thunderstorm watch is being considered for parts
of western and central Pennsylvania into parts of West Virginia and
the western Maryland Panhandle. Strong wind gusts will be the
primary severe weather threat, though a tornado or two is possible.

DISCUSSION...Surface streamline analysis indicated an area of
confluence from eastern WV into western PA early this afternoon,
which appears to be coincident to the leading edge of greater
forcing for ascent spreading east across the discussion area ahead
of the approaching upper trough. Breaks in cloudiness this
afternoon have allowed for some surface heating within a moist
environment contributing to moderate destabilization (MLCAPE of at
least 1000 J/kg). 30-40 kt of southwesterly midlevel winds will
maintain sufficient effective bulk shear for line segments/bowing
structures, with damaging winds the primary severe hazard. However,
a tornado threat does exist, especially in locations where surface
and low-level winds have a southerly trajectory, enhancing low-level
   shear/rotation.

Time to start up again for Fall/Winter.  This late season heat looks to continue into late September.  I'm hoping this means we'll have a swing to below normal later this Fall, though all long term maps from NWS show above normal clear through the winter months.  Looks like a deluge coming late this weekend and then current GFS has Florence possibly coming into PA late next week.  Definitely some active weather to track.

Beat me to it! Tropical season is like the preseason for winter in my book

Sunday definitely looking like a wash out thanks to Gordan remnants and the stalled boundary. Expect we will see flood headlines from NWS.

Florence bucking recent history if it makes landfall from current lat / long, but if the models are right on the steering ridge lookout as the conditions a day or so from now look ripe for intensification. Models look to have 2 camps, one with a SC/NC border landfall (this scenario seems to favor some impact here) and the other camp recurving but close enough for coastal impact. Margin of error for track at this lead though is hundreds of miles, but will be fun to keep an eye on and shake some rust off tracking skills.

Well, just finished moving recently, now residing in Allegheny county.

4th floor apartment has a nice view off to the north and east; sadly, I'll miss the best views incoming from the west, but maybe I can grab some decent observations for once.  In winter, not sure what the big differences will be, as I know the warm tongue does tend to drift this far north.  Maybe slightly more lake effect accums.

Might be looking at a lot of rain in the short-term.  Who knows yet what Florence will do.  Here's WPC estimates currently:
