The 09-10 winter started off this record number of top 10 snowiest months during the 2010's. It's the first time that all our major observing sites experienced so many top 10 months in such a short period of time. Islip alone has recorded 5 new #1 snowiest months this decade along with 4 months reaching 30 inches of snow. This April added to monthly top 10 amounts for every month since October in the 2010's.

The only monthly snowfall feat we haven't be able to pull off yet is a T like May 1977.

There have been numerous recent studies trying to find reasons for this historic increase in snowfall. Active research into the causes are currently focusing record warmth in the Arctic, Pacific, and Atlantic.

Great stats.

I have this April as number 9 in NYC though, not 8. You might want to double check that, one of us is wrong on that one.

No problem. I was using amount ranks like the NWS Upton site. I have seen the ranks compiled both ways.

when you rank them as shone the 6.4 storm should be number 7...it can throw you off if you don't look closely...

It really comes down to the methodology that you choose. Looks like NWS at Upton is using dense rank while some other sites use rank.

The difference between the RANK and DENSE_RANK functions is in how values are assigned to rows following a tie. In case of tie of two records for the first position, the third record that follows to the tie in order will be considered third position if you use RANK, while the third record that follows the tie is considered second position if you choose DENSE_RANK.

the number of times NYC saw 30" in 30 days has really gone up in recent years...there were five such periods from 1869 to 1993...five in 125 years...since 1994 there were six in only 25 years...

30" in 30 days...

02/24-03/24, 1896.....32.0"
02/06-03/07, 1914.....35.2"
12/26-01/24, 1948.....43.4"
01/15-02/13, 1961.....34.1"
01/16-02/14, 1978.....37.2"
02/02-03/03, 1994.....30.8"
12/14-01/12, 1996.....35.2"
01/28-02/26, 2010.....38.2"
01/07-02/05, 2011.....37.6"

01/21-02/19, 2014.....42.1"

Wow JFK's Nov 2018 is already #1 for snowfall?  What happened to Nov 1989- I thought JFK got 6 inches of snow the night before Thanksgiving.

Wow this is a very late complaint but that is a huge undermeasurement if they expect to also represent the Five Towns area.  We had at least 6 inches of heavy snow and it was really hard to shovel the next morning even though it was fluffy.  Parts of Long Island had close to a foot.  Temps definitely weren't an issue as it stuck to the roads right from the beginning- including on Broadway, where I happened to live.  Temps were in the 20s the whole time.

Nov 1995 was also a bit of an undermeasurement that was closer to 4" here.  No wonder JFK was the only local area reporting site not to hit 70" that winter!

JFK has data going back to 1949?  I think they were Idlewild back then but I didn't know international airports existed around here back in the 40s lol.  Did they measure snowfall going back to the historic 1947-48 winter, Chris?
