Seems to happen a lot here.  I'm only a mile or two from the Sound and there's a constant roar in the treetops during these storms.  I think there's a connection. The snow growth theory may have merit as well.

The good news is that while we may have less snow [depth] on the ground tonight, I find it lasts longer here.

I have family that lives near the NJ coast and I always notice the same thing whenever I experience the bigger coastal storms down there. Little wind seems to reach the ground and the trees barely move, yet it sounds like a busy airport outside. Snow quality is usually in the 8-10:1 range regardless of temperature, too.

Oceanside came in with 16” and Rockville Centre had 14”, so it gives me more confidence I had at least a foot. Roads around town are still awful.

I went with 13" as ot was super hard to measure.   My friend in LB say he has 14/15.

Maybe thats why your snow totals are often a few inches less than the surrounding areas. Islip is just to your south and recorded nearly 16"

Could be.  Also, in neighborhoods with small lot sizes half the snow is from roofs.  I'd like to think I' fairly accurate.

I've taken heat for low measurements but trust me, I want to win the golden shovel as much as anyone.

Too tired to finish reading the thread yesterday. Interesting for me to see the varying comments on this. I'm in Rocky Point, LI north shore, one block off the sound.  Even in the heaviest of the day, the earliest band, the snow was clearly fairly fine.  Even in slow eddies, I could only see occasional flakes up to maybe 0.25" at best.  The density of the snow here definitely surprised me when I went out to clean up.  Could tell snow blower was working a bit harder than expected. When I went to shovel non snow blower areas, found the snow very heavy, and very dense.  Not wet snow heavy, but much, much denser/heavier than expected.  My back is still hurting.  Drifting was interesting as well.  In places exposed to the wind, drifting was a definite factor - but more in the sense of recovering cleared areas and keeping other wind cleared spots clean.  One area of my neighbor's driveway was simply pointless to clear as it very quickly got recovered in snow.  But I didn't notice anything in the way of deep drifting in the neighborhood. Deepest in my yard was maybe 14" in a spot where I'd expect severe drift depth.  So I wonder if JFK's drift problem was similar - just dense snow that in the very high winds still recovered the runways. BNL is closed today due to issues with snow clearing and re-drifting, so I'm curious to see what kind of drifting they had when I'm back to work.

Whether it was snow growth problem, wind shattered flakes or a combination - I don't know.  I suspect both were a problem out here, but thinking the wind was the dominant issue.

In any case, great storm. Glad it worked out much better for more of the forum than might have been expected.

for most of the event here in bk and at work in lic, there were large flakes in the air. i think the wind does break them up once they hit the ground, which is how the pack ends up dense.  snow:liquid ratios varied quite a bit in the city (11:1 at LGA, 17:1 at JFK), which to me is a testament of how hard it is to measure both liquid and snow depth in a blizzard. in reality, those ratios likely vary considerably hour to hour depending on whether lift is through the dendritic growth zone. it certainly was higher in those 30+ DBZ fronto bands and then lower as those bands move off. strangely, snow:liquid ratios in southern new england were 20-50:1.

I didn’t know 50:1 was possible...

Was put up in hotel again last night here in Ewing for work so I have yet to go home back in Monmouth County. Only had what looks like around 4 or 5 inches in Ewing. Wife and kids couldn't get a good measurement for me back home due to the wind so I'll rely on the NWS official reports of between 10-14 inches by me.  Although PB said Colts Neck did have as much as 15 I believe. Not sure I trust my wife's measurement here though. These are the only three picks that were sent to me from Marlboro, Monmouth County.  I'm going home tonight so will be sure to take some shopping center snow pile pics. ha ha ha

This past Tuesday, I ventured to say that the storm would be a near miss for central Union county in NJ, but I was wrong.  The trough deepened faster than it was physically showing and the precip shield formed closer to the coast than modeled.  Managed 5.0" of snow in Garwood, with a few gusts to near 40 mph.  Not quite hurricane strength, but I didn't doubt that could happen on the east end of Long Island.  The storm followed the NAM, which most of us were watching fairly well.  Most professional forecasts seemed in the ballpark.  I would probably get it wrong again, even with having "learned" from this one.  One slight wobble east or west could have made significant differences.

The H5 low closed off south of LI but every model except the NAM did not pick that up until inside of 24 hours. Euro was closing it off well south, off NC and then re-opening it, shoving the storm and precip NE. It didn't pick up on the correct spot until inside of 24 hours.

:-D I see one of us qualifies as "essential".  Thanks for the pics. Definitely a much different picture than what I have local to my house.  I'm 90' or so above MSL and about 200' off the sound, but somewhat sheltered by trees - less so to the northwest than north and east.  Even so, new drifting today hasn't been much of a problem up here. The free sand application that blows up from the beach is a nice bonus I suppose.  BNL's 5000 acres and lots of open expanses make for more interesting times.  I feel for crews trying to clean things up.  I've spent enough snow storms there to know what it can be like.

I believe this was the heaviest snowstorm for portions of the Jersey Shore since Boxing Day.

ACY....14.2 vs 18.5 on Boxing Day.
